Plant onions forsummertime enjoyment
2 Times-Call / Home & Real Estate Weekly March 27, 2010
Adopt a variety of ways to plant onions in the gardenAs you’re planting your spring
garden, leave room for a basic ofgreat cooking. Growing onions inColorado is easy, and if you wantto add this allium to your veg-etable plot, the time to get plant-ing is now.
Seeds, seedlings and sets areavailable to the home gardener, soh e re ’s a quick primer on the dif-ference. Seeds are directly sowninto the garden from mid-Marchthrough the end of April and aresuccessful in Colorado. Sow them shallowly, about three-eighths of an inch deep.
Seedlings are started plants, grown this sea-son and not yet mature enough to begin form-ing bulbs. Locally, onion seedlings are readilyavailable in small clumps that you tease apartupon planting. Plant them 1 inch deep andslightly later than seeds, so any time in Aprilwill do.
Sets are onion bulbs that are about 1 inch indiameter and planted as you would a tulip ordaffodil. Both seeds and seedlings can be usedfor green onions, often called scallion-stage, orfor sizing up into storage bulbs. But if you usesets, keep in mind that they’re best if you wantonion bulbs.
Look for long-day varieties that form bulbsonce we have 14 or more hours of sunlight
daily; in our area, onions will beginproducing pungent, sweet orbs be-ginning in July.
Onions prefer fertile, well-drain-ing soil liberally amended with or-ganic material. Spread compost 1 to1.5 inches deep across the bed, thentill it in, working it eight inches in-to the soil. If you’ve sown seeds, thin them once the seedlings havefive to 10 leaves. For best bulb pro-duction, thin to 3 inches apart.Pulled seedlings are delicious fresh
or grilled; eat them as you would a scallion. Asyour onions grow, each leaf they put on repre-sents a ring in the bulb itself, and size matters:Larger leaves mean bigger rings.
Water them frequently, never allowing theirshallow roots to dry, which can cause bulbs tobe stunted and tough. Onions are nitrogen-greedy during the first part of the season, sofertilize until mid-July, then put them on a diet– onions don’t need much nitrogen past thatpoint.
As onions bulb, they often push themselvesout of the soil; this is normal and your plantwill be fine. Avoid giving in to the urge to“hill-up” your onions; hiding the beautifulbulb will work against the plant’s desire toplump it and you won’t get good production. As the plant prepares to bulb the neck will feel
a little soft and if your soil is hard from thesummer sun, gently loosen it to let the plantexpand.
Keep weeds to a minimum, since theyrapidly crowd out the less-vigorous onion.Careful, shallow hoeing around the plants is amust to avoid damaging the developing bulb,so if you’re a bit of a brute with the hoe, mulchis a good option for your onions.
Thrips are common insects in our area, rasping off the surface of the onion leaf, leav-ing a tell-tale trail of silver. They hide out onweeds, so weed suppression is key to control.
You can tell if your onion is mature by itsfloppy tops, which start laying over in mid-August. Hold off on watering at this point andwhen most of the tops have fallen, gently liftthe onions from the ground. Let them rest ontop of the ground for up to two days, trying tokeep them oriented the same way they grew inthe ground to prevent sunburn.
After two or three days, take the onions intoa warm, dry location to cure for several weeksuntil the necks are completely dry. Trim thetops, then store the bulbs in a mesh bag out ofsunlight in a cool location.

Indoor glamour comesto the great outdoors
By Melissa Rayworth
The Associated Press
Outdoor living has always been a priori-ty in the sunniest parts of the country. Inte-rior designers Brian Patrick Flynn and Mal-lory Mathison often focus on the exteriorwhen working with homeowners in theSouth.
But even in the North, outdoor diningand entertaining have become a priority, says designer Janine Carendi, who primari-ly works with clients in New York City.“Not only isn’t it the last thing people wantto think about,” she says, “but in NewYork, where outdoor space is so rare, it’s of-ten the first thing they start with.”
Flynn says many homeowners havecome to think of their outdoor space as anadditional living room and dining room, decorating the space as though it’s inside. At large homes, outdoor space has becomethe focal point, much the way kitchens andbaths have garnered extra attention in re-cent years. And at smaller homes, outdoorareas are a great tool for maximizing livingspace.
Retailers have taken notice. The range ofoutdoor products – furniture, rugs, draperies – that look as though they belongindoors has increased considerably. “If youlook hard enough and have the resources,”Mathison says, “you can find anything foroutside that looks as good as for inside. It’s
a huge advance from five years ago, andeven in the past two years.”
Comfy Club Chairs, Low Slung TablesThe shape and scale of outdoor furniture
is changing, Mathison says. “You see peopletaking a cue from European lifestyle anddoing al fresco dining, with dining tablesthat are a lower height, and chairs that are alot more comfortable than standard diningchairs,” she says. “ It’s all about lingeringand really enjoying being outside, havinglong conversations.” Flynn loves the latestofferings from Jason Champion Outdoor, which capture a lounge, relaxed feelingp e rf e c t l y.
Indoor Elements Brought OutsideMathison recently saw an antique ar-
moire that had been outfitted to hold anoutdoor barbecue grill. “At a show houserecently, you see this armoire, and thenthey open it up, and it has a grill inside ...with all the utensils and equipment hang-ing inside,” she says.
Televisions, too, have migrated outside:Flynn says moisture-resistant, flat-panelTVs are a popular outdoor accessory, though they are easy targets for theft.
Indoor/outdoor fabrics and rugs are alsobeing used to amplify the living-room feel-ing. They add indoor style to an outdoorspace, Carendi says, but also stand up tothe elements and are easily cleaned. Pat-terns have changed. Rather than relying on
awning stripes and other outdoorsy styles, these products are designed with an indoorlook. Mathison likes outdoor rugs fromWilliams-Sonoma or Ballard Designs. Forfabrics, Carendi and Flynn both like TrinaTu r k ’s outdoor designs for Schumacher.
Outdoor Kitchens
The outdoor kitchen is here to stay, saysFlynn, with a growing number of peoplegoing beyond an elaborate grill to create afull cooking and serving area. Outdoor re-frigerators, outdoor ice makers and sepa-rate coolers for beer and wine are becomingmore common, he says. Mathison agrees, adding, “You see outdoor cocktail stations... and things like warming drawers andprep areas for grills.”
Architectural AccentsOld signage, reclaimed columns, old
windows found at flea markets: Bits ofcommercial or retro architecture are be-coming a popular way to put a uniquestamp on outdoor spaces. These pieces areused on their own as decoration or to con-struct a pergola to cover and draw focus tothe dining or lounging area.
Defining an Open SpaceGazebos, pergolas and other garden
structures are a great way to define a spaceand make it feel like an indoor room thathappens to be outdoors. Mathison loves thechoices at Smith & Hawken, but says evenHome Depot has attractive pergolas for afew hundred dollars. These structures limitsun exposure without blocking light entire-ly, and they’re great for hanging lights orpotted plants.
For patios that are simply a slab of con-crete, Flynn suggests painting the concretewith bold color stripes or other designs.Yo u ’re essentially creating an outdoor rugout of paint.
For roof gardens, his current favoriteproduct is Newgrass. “No matter whereyou live, it instantly adds green space in acity, even for a tiny, 6-by-6 (foot) terrace,”he says. Unlike prickly fake turf, he says, this artificial grass looks lush and feelsgreat to walk on.

Mixed metals inthe bathroom
Create an instantspring outdoors
When you’ve had enough of winter andcrave spring color, why wait? Ready-grownpotted tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and otherspring bulbs are widely available during latewinter and early spring at supermarkets, home centers and other retail outlets.
Pick up afew, takethemhome, popthem outof theirplastic potsand re-plant themalong thewalk, thefrontstoop, your deckor balconyor wher-ever you’dlike an ear-ly dose ofspring. For best results using potted bulbsoutdoors, wait until local overnight freezeshave passed.
Choose young bulb plants with tightbuds. Acclimate the potted plants to colderweather for a day or so, keeping them in acold protected spot such as an unheatedgarage or porch. Then transplant them intoa large decorative pot or even the garden ifthe soil is workable. Water the bulbs afterplanting. No other care is necessary. Hy-acinths have a heady fragrance, makingthem perfect to place near walks and en-tryways. Colorful tulips and bright daffodilsare perfect anywhere. The rule for bathroom deco-rating has always been to coor-dinate finishes. But sometimesbreaking the rules createssomething unique and moreinteresting. That’s certainlythe case with bathroom fixturefinishes. Today’s homeownerhas an array of finishes tochoose from when searchingfor faucets, cabinet hardwareand towel bars. But can theybe mixed effectively? Withplanning, mixing finishes isnot only possible but greatlooking too.
Coordinated FixturesTo make the finishes work
together, it’s helpful to find co-ordinating elements that willplay against them. For in-stance, in the bathroom pic-tured, the shiny porcelainbathtub, toilet and sink fix-tures play against the mattefinish tile and against the satinstainless tile inset into theshower and backsplash of thesink. The sparkle of the pol-ished bath fixtures pops ratherthan blending in, which iswhat satin finish plumbing fix-tures would have done. Thebright chrome finish adds lifeto the room and makes a dy-namic statement.
Floor tiles with soft satinsteel buttons at each corner
bring the backsplash andshower accent tiles togetherfor a cohesive look that unifiesthe whole room. The contrastbetween the satin design ele-ments (which also include thecabinet hardware and light fix-ture) and the polish of thebathroom plumbing fixturesgives the bathroom a certainbalance that keeps it from feel-ing bland. Had the fixture fin-ishes been satin, the bathroomwould have missed some im-portant design zip that givesthis bathroom standout ap-peal.
How to Mix FinishesOrdinarily, mixing finishes
is difficult to do. But when asecondary element is added –in this case, the backsplashand tile inset – the look goesfrom good to incredible. Andit’s this secondary element thatunifies the two different fin-ishes. If you want to mix fin-ishes, look for a lighting fix-ture or other decorative ele-ment that has a mix of colorsto help bring the look togeth-e r.
Another way to mix finishessuccessfully is to keep all theplumbing fixtures in the samefinish, such as polished nickel, and then select lighting andcabinet hardware in a satin fin-ish. When done right, mixingtwo distinct finishes looks up-
scale and uniquely fresh. Butdon’t try to introduce morethan two finishes, or the lookwill become distracting anddisjointed.
Different ColorsIs it possible to mix differ-
ent colored finishes such asbronze and nickel? It is if youhave a third unifying element, such as tiles or wallpaper thatreference both colors. Anotherway to carry this off is to cre-ate a visual focal point by se-lecting a unique finish for astandout fixture, such as a talllavatory faucet for a vessel
bowl sink. In this instance, both the sink and the faucetbecome much more noticeablethan if the faucet matched thefinish of the rest of the plumb-ing fixtures. The faucet wouldlook especially good if it werea completely different colorfinish than the remainingplumbing fixtures.
It’s not written in stone thatmetallic finishes must match –and sometimes it looks betterwhen they don’t. So be daringand experiment.

He should set up arevocable trust (you can pay for it ifhe can’t) so that the house automati-cally becomes yours upon his death.Assuming that Congress gets aroundto fixing the estate tax at some pointin time and reinstates the stepped-upbasis, you will be able to inherit theproperty at the then current marketvalue upon his death.
Right now, whether he gives youthe property or you inherit it, you’llget it at his cost basis. If he is going todie soon, then a quitclaim deed willwork just fine. But the idea of using aquitclaim deed now – when he is stillliving – doesn’t make too much sense.A quitclaim deed is generally used totransfer the interest in property fromone person to another at the presenttime.
In some states, you can use a trans-fer-on-death document or deed thatwould transfer title of the home fromyour ex-husband to you upon hisdeath. You could consider that optionif it’s available to you in your state.Otherwise, transferring title of thehome into a trust would be anothersolution for you.

Antique plates for childrenare often educationalBy Helaine Fendelman
and Joe Rosson
Scripps Howard News
Service
Dear Helaine and Joe: I’veenclosed photos of an oldironstone ABC bowl. Themark on the bottom indi-cates that it was probablymade in East Liverpool,Ohio. (I estimate 1850s to1880s.) Can you tell me themaker, age, value, etc.? – J.E.
Dear J.E.: ABC (or alphabet)plates and mugs have beenaround for a long time. Theywere most popular between the1820s and 1860s, but they ac-tually originated in late-18th-century England and continueto be made to this day.
Our ancestors wanted every-thing a child encountered to bean educational experience, ei-ther religious or secular. ABCplates and mugs were designednot only to hold food but alsoto teach the little tykes their al-phabet while they ate – andplayed with – their food.
Many times, these ABCitems also had moralistic say-ings designed to deliver thedouble whammy of teachingreading skills and instilling val-ues at the same time. OtherABC objects skipped the plati-tudes and offered entertainingimages of games (baseball, cricket or marbles), animals(dogs, cats, donkeys, chicks, stags, lions or elephants), nurs-ery rhymes, foreign scenes, flowers, Civil War images andpictures from books such as“Robinson Crusoe.”
Still another series had alarge letter in the center of theplate such as a big “B” and thephrase “B is for ball” (and soforth). ABC pieces can befound made from pottery(creamware, pearlware andironstone), glass and tin withthe pottery items being themost desirable as a generalrule.
A large number of potterymakers located in Stafford-shire, England, made these al-phabet pieces, but late in the19th century, American ver-sions became available, as well.It is difficult to read the markon the piece in today’s ques-tion, but after a few false starts,we determined that the D.E.McNicol Pottery Co. in EastLiverpool, Ohio, and Clarks-burg, W.Va., manufactured thepiece.
This would be a charmingpiece except that it is seriouslydamaged beyond all repair.Grease has seeped under theglaze over the years and causedan ugly brown discoloration;the transfer-printed decorationis so worn it cannot be clearlyseen; and most seriously, thebowl itself has been cracked innumerous places (probablywhen it was placed directly ona stove to reheat the food).
In this deplorable condition, this baby’s dish has only senti-mental value; there is no mon-etary value whatsoever.
Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rossonare the authors of “Price It Yourself”(HarperResource, $19.95). Contactthem at Treasures in Your Attic, P.O.Box 27540, Knoxville, TN 37927. E-mail them at [email protected].

Tax credits may helpguide remodeling projectsArticle Resource
A ss o c i at i o n
As warm weather ap-proaches and the tax creditfor energy efficient replace-ment windows is in fullswing, now is the perfecttime to consider upgradingyour home with new win-dows to help save on cool-ing costs in those hot sum-mer months, and to alsosave on heating costs whenwinter rolls around again. The tax credit for energy ef-ficient replacement win-dows and doors, originally introduced in2009 as part of the American Recovery andReinvestment Act, is set to expire at theend of 2010, which makes this year thebest time for homeowners to replace theirwindows and upgrade the look and feel oftheir home.
“New windows not only make the homelook more beautiful, they can help save en-ergy and money for the homeowners,” saysChris Pickering, vice president, marketing,Ply Gem windows.
Ply Gem, a leader in the building prod-ucts industry, offers some tips and guide-lines to help homeowners make the mostof the energy efficient replacement win-dow tax credit.
How much money can I get back with thewindows tax credit?
Homeowners can receive a tax creditworth 30 percent of the purchase price ofqualifying energy efficient windows, up toa maximum of $1,500 if purchased and in-stalled by Dec. 31, 2010.
To redeem the credit, be sure to saveyour invoice that shows a breakout of win-dow and installation costs.
How do I qualify for the tax credit? The federal government established
strict standards for windows to qualify for
the tax credit. Replacement windows musthave a glass package with a U-Factor rat-ing (the rate at which heat is preventedfrom escaping) of 0.30 or lower. Qualify-ing windows must also possess a SolarHeat Gain Coefficient rating of 0.30 orlower. The lower the window’s SHGC, theless solar heat it transmits.
What are the benefits of remodeling myhome with energy efficient windows?
Energy efficient windows that meet thetax qualifications offer more savings than aone-time federal tax credit. The Alliance toSave Energy says that sealing and insulat-ing your house, including utilizing energyefficient windows, is a great first step totake when improving your home’s energyefficiency. Proper sealing and insulationcan reduce your heating and cooling billby approximately 20 percent. An energyaudit may be available through your localutility or state energy office to help gaugethe amount of energy that you are current-ly using and determine what productswould decrease your energy use.
Environmental and economic benefitsare not the only upsides to remodeling ahome – new windows in classic or contem-porary designs can also enhance the aes-thetic quality of the home and make amore comfortable living space.
Homeowners can receive a tax credit worth up to $1,500 forreplacing their old windows with new, energy efficient windowsby the end of the year. (ARA)

Twinny Peach snapdragon wins bedding awardSpecial to the Times-Call
Who took the snap out of Snapdragon?Twinny Peach the AAS Winner, is a snapdrag-on without the snap. Why? Because it is adouble or butterfly flower form that does nothave the jaws or joints to snap.
The double flower form is the origin forthe name Twinny or twins. Another unique
quality is the blend of peach tonecolors.
The soft shades of peach, yellow and lightorange are distinct, and no other snapdragonoffers this range of colors. Match TwinnyPeach with blue tones of Salvia farinacea orpurple foliage plants and your garden will bea knockout.
In a full sun garden, Twinny Peach willproduce abundant flower spikes, plenty tocut and place in vases for fresh indoor bou-quets. Plants will continue to flower all sea-son with little garden care.
Like all snapdragons, Twinny Peach is easyto grow and it exhibited heat tolerance in theAAS Trials.
