The islands offer every-thing from rolling hills to old-growth forests to pris-tine beaches. They also offer hamlets, towns and beauti-ful landscapes to make your home. Here are some facts to get acquainted with these fair isles and the people who live here.Geography

The San Juan Islands, lo-cated in the heart of the Sal-ish Sea, are made up of 172 islands, rocks and reefs – at high tide, but that number jumps to no less than 743 at low tide.

San Juan County covers 174 square miles and has a population density of 91 persons per square mile.

The county is divided into 20,016 parcels. Fifty per-cent is valued at fair market value; 14 percent is desig-nated forest land; 15 percent is current use (including farmland) and 21 percent is exempt.

The average value of a parcel valued at fair market is $363,064.

Cost of Living IndexThe islands’ cost of living

indexes are based on a U.S. average of 100. According to bestplaces.net, in San Juan County the cost of living is 148.70, which is more ex-pensive than the nation’s average.The Household

The median household income is $52,712; the per capita money income is $38,636 and 11 percent of the population lives below the poverty level. In 2011, the county had 938 non-farm businesses offering

San Juan County was ranked number two as the state’s healthiest county by the University of Wiscon-sin Health Institute in 2012. The ranking is based on fac-tors such as air pollution, premature death, violent crime rate, access to health care, teen birth rate, motor vehicle crash rate and other socio-economic factors.

EducationSan Juan County boasts

a high level of education: 19 percent hold graduate or professional degrees; an-other 26 percent hold bach-elor’s degrees; 5 percent hold associates; 27 percent have received some college edu-cation; 18 percent are high school graduates and 6 per-cent did not graduate high school.Immigration

Of foreign-born county residents, 31 percent were born in Europe; 10 percent in Asia; 2 percent in Africa; 1 percent in Oceania; 38

percent in Latin America and 18 percent in North America.Population

San Juan County’s popu-lation totaled 15,769 year-round residents in 2010, ac-cording to the U.S. Census, which makes it the eighth smallest of Washington state’s 39 counties. The ma-jority of islanders live in unincorporated areas of the county.

The largest and only in-corporated city in San Juan County is the Town of Fri-day Harbor, with a popula-tion of 2,162 in 2010.

San Juan County consists of nearly an equal number of men and women. Of its 15,769 residents, 51.4 per-cent were female in 2010, according to U.S. Census figures. That’s slightly more, however, than the state ra-tio of 50.2 percent for that year. The number of people 65 years and older made up 23.2 percent of the popula-tion, nearly double the state mark of 12.3 percent. Island-ers under the age of 18 made up 15.8 percent, with 3.4 percent under the age of five.

According to the state Office of Financial Manage-ment, almost two-thirds of the San Juan County popu-lation are over the age of 40. That’s far greater than the national and state marks, each at about 44 percent. Conversely, less than 26 percent of the population is under the age of 30. The age bracket of 20-29 consistently has the fewest number of is-landers, other than those 80 years or older.

Of the county population, roughly 75 percent live out-side its three urban village areas: Friday Harbor, 2,162; Eastsound, 980; Lopez Vil-lage, 190. The county land area is 174.9 square miles (fewest in Washington state). There are 90.9 people per square mile (10th among Washington counties).

averaged nearly 5,400 jobs covered by unemployment insurance, with a $148 mil-lion payroll.

The county’s annual aver-age wage was $27,563, well below the state average of $42,881. In 2006, the county ranked 35th in total covered wages. Wages in utilities were the highest at $53,457. The next highest wages were paid in educational services ($36,976), followed by finance and insurance ($36,060). At the other end of the spectrum were wages in arts, entertainment and recreation ($15,315), real estate and rental and leas-ing ($17,296) and accom-modation and food ser-vices ($17,655). In 2005, the median hourly wage was $16.66, ninth highest in the state. In 2005, per-sonal income was $44,053, higher than the state average ($35,479) and the national average ($34,495). Weather

The San Juans have their fair share of sunny, clear days with blue waters just waiting for boating, crab-bing, kayaking and more.

While you can count on pretty regular seasons — mild springs, sunny sum-mers and wet fall months — the winter can be a wild

card. Sometimes the islands see snow, wind and rain, other winters are mild.Weather is one of the most desirable attributes of the San Juan Islands. The new edition of “1,000 Places To See Before You Die” lists the San Juan Islands as place number 899. Temperatures rarely top 80 degrees in the summer and rarely fall be-low 30 degrees in the winter. Where Property Owners Live

In 2007, the San Juan County Treasurer’s Office mailed nearly half of all that year’s property tax state-ments to addresses outside San Juan County. In re-sponse to an inquiry by the San Juan County Council during a more recent bud-get presentation, the trea-surer’s office determined that of 19,608 statements mailed that year, 30 per-cent (5,830) went to other cities in Washington state; 19 percent (3,628) went to addresses in 47 other states, and 88 statements were mailed to an address in 20 foreign countries.

Not all statements sent out of county represent non-residents, however. Many islanders winter in warmer climates, like Ari-zona and California, and some statements are mailed to financial institutions on the East Coast or to taxpay-ing services in the Midwest.
