Initiative on Nursing
and Midwifery Values
• The CNO Siobhan O’Halloran, Mary Wynne in the HSE and Essene Cassidy in the NMBI are in partnership asking nurses and midwives to reflect on the reasons why they became a nurse or midwife and recommit to these values
• What are the values you believe underpin your practice as a nurse or midwife?
Purpose of the Values Initiative
• The purpose of this project is to develop a position paper that states the values that underpin nursing and midwifery practice. The objective is to consult on, identify, agree and commit to a set of nursing and midwifery values that underpin practice in Ireland.
Are Values Important?
• When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.
• It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.
Roy E. Disney (born 1930)
Core Values

• they can never be compromised, either for convenience or short-term economic gain;
• they reflect the values of the founders;

Care
Care is an integral component of nursing and midwifery
practice. The focus of the concept of care is the
sensitivity required in accepting and understanding the
other person’s views of health, birth, living, illness, and
dying. In practice critical caring is demonstrated through
listening and providing support to the person and the
people who are important to that person;
Compassion
Compassionate nursing and midwifery practice is
characterised by an appreciation, gentleness, and deep
concern that shows an understanding of the person. In
practice critical acting using compassion is
demonstrated when someone is interested in getting to
know the person as a person and the people who are
important to that person;
Competency
Competency can be understood as having the
required knowledge, skill, and attitude to support a
culture of critical thinking where nurses and
midwives utilise evidence and their knowledge of
illness and recovery to give the best care and
achieve the best outcome for the person
Care Compassion Competence

demonstrate care by;
respecting your dignity and

midwifery care with you and
responding to your changing

showing interest in getting to
know you as a person and the
people who are important to you
The nurse/midwife will
