Reaffirming the Values of Nursing and Midwifery

Focusing development on patient outcomes

Initiative on Nursing

and Midwifery Values

• The CNO Siobhan O’Halloran, Mary Wynne in the HSE and Essene Cassidy in the NMBI are in partnership asking nurses and midwives to reflect on the reasons why they became a nurse or midwife and recommit to these values

• What are the values you believe underpin your practice as a nurse or midwife?

Purpose of the Values Initiative

• The purpose of this project is to develop a position paper that states the values that underpin nursing and midwifery practice. The objective is to consult on, identify, agree and commit to a set of nursing and midwifery values that underpin practice in Ireland.

Are Values Important?

• When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.

• It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.

Roy E. Disney (born 1930)

Core Values

• they are inherent and sacrosanct;

• they can never be compromised, either for convenience or short-term economic gain;

• they reflect the values of the founders;

• they are the source of distinctiveness and must be maintained at all costs.

Professional Values

• Qualities, characteristics, or ideas about which we feel strongly.

• Our values affect our decisions, goals and behavior.

• Support a belief or feeling that someone or something is worthwhile.

• Values are standards to guide your actions, judgments, and attitudes.

Care

Care is an integral component of nursing and midwifery

practice. The focus of the concept of care is the

sensitivity required in accepting and understanding the

other person’s views of health, birth, living, illness, and

dying. In practice critical caring is demonstrated through

listening and providing support to the person and the

people who are important to that person;

Compassion

Compassionate nursing and midwifery practice is

characterised by an appreciation, gentleness, and deep

concern that shows an understanding of the person. In

practice critical acting using compassion is

demonstrated when someone is interested in getting to

know the person as a person and the people who are

important to that person;

Competency

Competency can be understood as having the

required knowledge, skill, and attitude to support a

culture of critical thinking where nurses and

midwives utilise evidence and their knowledge of

illness and recovery to give the best care and

achieve the best outcome for the person

Care Compassion Competence

The nurse/midwife will

demonstrate care by;

respecting your dignity and

privacy;

providing support to the people

who are important to you;

working with other healthcare

professionals and support

workers to provide care;

listening and taking time to talk

with you

The nurse/midwife will

demonstrate compassion by;

showing compassion and kindness

in each interaction;

reviewing your nursing and

midwifery care with you and

responding to your changing

needs;

showing interest in getting to

know you as a person and the

people who are important to you

The nurse/midwife will

demonstrate competency by;

explaining your care to you and

answering your questions;

recognising your personal, social

and spiritual needs as well as your

medical and physical

requirements;

developing a written plan of

you using professional and best

practice guidelines;
