Research Proposal- solid waste management in Indian
Railways
Topic:Solid Waste Management
Problem/ Area of study:Solid waste Management in Indian Railways
Hypothesis:PPP model is most suited for waste management in Indian
railways
Need of Sudy:
The area of solid waste management has always been neglected in the Indian
railways. Policies for the same have been ept at the lowest level and so are the
steps taen in the same dame direction. !lthough recently some of the private
players have stepped into the business and taen initiative to manage the solid
waste but" still we find the waste disposed on the railway tracs and corners ofthe platforms.
The research shall focus on the similar problems" study the various approaches
adopted and try to address the failures of the current systems so that efficient
plan of action can be formulated to eep the Indian Railways clean.
Objectives:
#$ To study the various approaches adopted by the Railways to manage the
solid waste across the world with a special focus on approaches adopted
in india.
%$ To &ind the place'places of generation of solid waste
($ To find out the per capita solid waste generated at the railway stations.
)$ !nalyse the date collected via survey to formulate a conclusion and
recommendations for the Indian railways to upeep the ways of solid
waste management.
Literature Study:
*ata of various approaches of solid waste management
+nvironment Management in Indian railways
!nnual report of Indian railways
Report no , %/- 0leanliness and sanitation in Indian railways.
Studies done in the past.
Study of the various 1ones of railway stations and their hierarchy
2ierarchy of trains" their functioning and run time
Scope and Limitation
The study shall cover %-( 3total #,$ 1ones of indian railways in which %-( stationsfrom each category 3Small" Medium" 4arge$ shall be taen into consideration.

on the tracs outside the station premises.
The study shall not deal with any other type other type of waste lie water" soil
waste.
ata collection:
Observation
the places of accumulation of solid waste at the railway station
places of accumulation of solid waste in the trains
fre:uency of the trains originating' starting ' crossing and passing by

Survey:
Sample si1e has to be large appro; )
!$ ! sample who is starting a ?ourney
@$ ! sample who is getting down at the last station of the train
0$ ! sample who is getting down from a train passing by
*$ ! sample who is receiving'dropping someone at the station
To chec the awareness of the citi1ens about the dustbins
To chec the awareness about the segregation at source
To find the convineant places of waste disposal
To find the :uality and :uantity of dustbins provided at the platforms and trains.
Waiting time at station
Type and :uantity of waste generated by the sample itself.
