our mission

Ready Readers inspires preschool-age children from low-income communities to become

readers by reading aloud to them, increasing their exposure to high-quality books, and

providing literacy-related experiences.

Ready Readers is and has always been focused on community. But this year, we set aside some time to turn our focus inward. To sharpen our vision by taking a good look at our organization – and our role in the community. We sorted out what’s important to us, and what we want to deliver to the children we serve, their teachers, our volunteers and our donors.

The result? A fresh set of goals and objectives that inspires reading beyond our classroom visits. A new vision statement that puts children at the center of everything we do. And a set of core values to guide us in our efforts to nurture young readers.

This year, we also studied the impact of Ready Readers’ work in the community. We asked an independent firm to assess a sample of 80 Pre-K children in our program at the beginning of the school year and again at the end. We also surveyed our teachers and our volunteer readers. The results were extremely gratifying: students showed sizeable increases in all five categories of assessed literacy behaviors, plus increases in vocabulary and reading frequency both at school and at home. In fact, the percentage of children reporting “someone reads to me at home” jumped from 38% at the beginning of the year to 85% at the end. Wow!

You can view the complete results from our 2013-2014 Outcome Study at www.readyreaders.org.

In closing, we’d like to thank you for your support of our mission and ask for your continued help in inspiring young children from low-income communities become enthusiastic readers. Diane Sinclair is our Volunteer Program Director. She can tell you all about volunteering in a classroom as a weekly reader. You can reach Diane at 314-825-8751 or [email protected].

If you are unable to volunteer, please consider supporting Ready Readers with a tax-deductible donation. Investing in a child’s education is the best investment you can make.

Sincerely,

Linda Finerty Lisa Greening

President of the Board Executive Director

n To place, train, and provide ongoing support for volunteer readers in order to ensure their commitment, enthusiasm, preparation, and effectiveness.

n To provide each child with at least six new, high-quality books each school year for further enjoyment at home.

n To give each classroom copies of the same books that the children receive. Teachers are provided with extension activities and opportunities for their professional development based on using the books with their children.

n To enhance literacy skills of the children by training volunteers and teachers in best practices in reading aloud and providing literacy experiences.

n To foster positive relationships between the children and their volunteer readers who are committed to reading aloud to the same class every week for at least a semester.

IT’S OFFICIAL! The American Academy of Pediatrics has advised pediatricians to

prescribe reading aloud for all of their young patients. Reading, the organization

says, is critical for brain development during a child’s first three years and enhances

the child’s vocabulary and communication skills. Source: The New York Times, June 24, 2014.

At Ready Readers, we select books that spark imagination,

challenge young minds, and unlock a love for reading that

continues outside the classroom. This year, we sent our

preschool friends home with six high-quality children’s

SERVICE

Knowing that you’ve made a positive

impact in a child’s life is a joy beyond

measure. At Ready Readers, we have a

unique opportunity to touch young lives

by the thousands! It’s a big job — one we

couldn’t do without our team of dedicated

volunteers.

This year, 570 volunteers donated their

time, energy and enthusiasm as readers

in preschool classrooms throughout the

region. The same reader visited the same

class each week to encourage strong

bonds with the children, teachers and

school. It’s the only model of its kind in

the country!

In addition, more than two-dozen

mentors gave their time to help new

readers become acclimated to their

classrooms. Another several volunteers

from Elsevier, Webster University

Webster Works, and University of

Phoenix packed boxes of books that were

distributed to our classrooms and given

to students to take home.

NOTABLE NEW GROUPS AND OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEERS

This year, Ready Readers welcomed two new volunteer groups to our team:

n Our Advisory Board, comprised of past board members, meets

twice yearly to offer expertise and fresh ideas for fulfilling our mission.

n Our Junior Advisory Board consists of 12 high school students. The board

meets twice yearly to learn about nonprofit work. The students also read to

preschool children throughout the summer, help with fundraising events, and

collect gently used books for our schools.

A nIGHT TO CELEBRATE SERVICEOn May 14, Ready Readers hosted a special evening at Clayton

High School to thank volunteers from the past year. The Volunteer

Appreciation Celebration honored everyone who gave time weekly

to read in our preschool classrooms, while recognizing a select

few with awards for exemplary service.

At Ready Readers, we want every child to find joy in reading. And the wonderful

thing about creating joyful experiences for them is that we also get to share in those

cherished moments. Here are some observations we heard from our teachers and

volunteers over the past year.

“ The children love to hear the books that the Ready Readers read to them over and over! I think they want to relive the great story again and again.” – Classroom Teacher

“ I missed a couple of weeks of reading because I had the flu. When I returned, I still sounded a little nasally. When I finished reading, one of the boys helped me put my books back in my bag, gave me a hug, and when I was putting my coat on, he came over and zipped it for me. I almost lost it.” – Ready Readers Volunteer

“ After hearing the book Caps for Sale, one of the children took different colored plates from the housekeeping area, put them on her head, and walked around the room yelling ‘Caps for sale!’” – Classroom Teacher

“ The volunteer experience is among the most meaningful experiences in my near six decades of life. I cherish the time with the children, teachers, administrators, families,

and staff at Hope House.” – Ready Readers Volunteer

When Ready Readers volunteers visit a classroom, they’re opening more

than just books – they’re opening young minds. And on a few occasions

this year, we were able to take those learning experiences one step

further through literacy-themed field trips and special events.

n Thanks to the Monsanto Fund, 2,400 preschoolers visited The Magic House for a free “Little Bit of Magic” field trip, based on our gift book, Step Gently Out.

n Children at Cornerstone Center for Early Learning enjoyed a free “Caps for Sale” field trip at St. Louis Science Center, courtesy of MasterCard.

n At our STL250 “Celebration of our Young Children” event, 240 preschoolers from St. Louis Public Schools joined us at the newly renovated St. Louis Public Central Library. The day included storytelling by Ready Readers volunteer Miz Felix, touring the library’s beautiful new spaces, and a meet-and-greet with Mr. Ready Readers Worm (costume worn by Board member Lana Wright). Each child received a bag filled with books and resources, courtesy of Read From the Start, First Book St. Louis, St. Louis Public Library, and Ready Readers.

n Pet Advocate Leaders from Nestlé Purina visited our classrooms with support dogs and read books to the children about dogs and cats. The PALs also presented the children in their classrooms with the book, How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Cats?

respect and kindneSS

At Ready Readers, we understand that a little kindness goes a long way toward

encouraging positive behaviors. So our volunteers treat everyone in the classroom –

children and teachers – with respect. This, combined with a healthy dose of fun, keeps

our young audiences eager for more interaction with our readers and with books.

“ [Our reader is] amazing. She includes the staff in the story activity, changes her voice for each character, and shares new knowledge with the children in a way that is memorable and fun!” — Ready Readers Classroom Teacher

“ Children were excited to receive books for home. After reading them with the Ready Readers, they felt empowered as if they could read the book for their families.” — Ready Readers Classroom Teacher

“ When I read a book that I had gotten from the library, the children would want to take the book home [like they were able to do with their gift books]. I encouraged them to get someone to take them to the library and some of the children now go to the library for books.” — Ready Readers Volunteer

[ ]“ Literacy gives people tools with which to improve their livelihoods, participate in community decision-making, gain access to information about health care, and much else besides. Above all, it enables individuals to realize their rights as citizens and human beings. Literacy is not just about reading and writing; it is about respect, opportunity and development.” — United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, 2009

“…YOU’RE TOO GREEN!” SAID WADDLE. “AND YOU CAN’T QUACK,” SAID PIDDLE. “AND YOU’RE A FROG!” SAID PUDDLE. “THAT’S OKAY!” SAID LITTLE QUACK. “I WANT TO PLAY!” — Little Quack’s New Friend, Lauren Thompson

READY READERS AT THE caPITOL

This spring, for the first time ever, Ready Readers

participated in the Annual Child Advocacy Day in

Jefferson City. This event, hosted by Missouri Alliance

for Children, Youth and Families, gives people who

work with kids or care for kids an opportunity to

ask Missouri lawmakers to make children’s health,

education and safety a top legislative priority.

This year, Ready Readers engaged with other community

organizations in a shared effort to provide quality early childhood

education for all. Our partners included:

n St. Louis Regional Early Childhood Council

n Beyond Housing’s 24:1 Initiative in Normandy

with United 4 Children

n Child Care Aware of Eastern Missouri,

Our Fundraising is Fun-raising!

Throughout the year, Ready Readers hosted a variety of events —

and even one Non Event! — to raise funds for our literacy initiatives.

n Imaginary Theatre Company Benefit Performance — A theater

performance, donated by The Rep’s Imaginary Theatre Company,

carnival games, and other kids’ activities all rolled into one giant

day of fun at Clayton High School.

n Trivia Night and Silent Auction — Hundreds of people joined

together at John Burroughs School to tease their brain cells and

test their trivia knowledge, all for a great cause.

n Non Event — No muss, no fuss, and yet it’s our #1 fundraiser!

Participants received an invitation from friends, inviting them to stay

home, read a good book and make a donation to Ready Readers.

n “One Dime at a Time” – During the months of January, February

and March, Whole Foods Market® in Brentwood donated a dime

to Ready Readers for every reusable bag shoppers used.

n Barnes and Noble Book Fair – Everyone had a fun day shopping

for holiday gifts from Barnes and Noble in Ladue Crossing and

20% of sales were donated to Ready Readers.
