Our Islamic calendar is studied from many waysand methods in this pack of worksheets and

activities. Learn the names, the order in which they come,which months are holy, and important

Islamic dates throughout the year.

Then they had to decide which month would start the year. Ramadan was suggested, as well as Rabi al-Awwal. Umar decided to start the Islamic year with the month of Muharram, because it came after Dhul-Hijjah. When someone completes Hajj, and it is accepted by Allah, their sins are forgiven. That is a great time to start a new year.

This was because the Arabs at the time had no way to track years. They didn’t even recognize which month was first. Then Abu Musa, the governor of Baghdad, wrote a letter to the Khalifah explaining that since there was no way to write an exact date, he was not sure when he was supposed to follow Umar’s orders.

So that they would know one Shawwal from the previous, they needed a start date. Many years were suggested, such as the year of the Prophet’s birth, or the year of his death. Then Ali ibn Ali Talib suggested that they use the year of the Prophet’s Hijrah. That excellent suggestion was agreed upon. It was a new chapter in the lives of the Muslims when the Prophet came to Madinah. They could learn from him and worship in public for the first time, and never went into hiding after that.

One day, a few years after the death of Prophet Muhammad, a problem came to the Khalifah, Umar ibn al Khattab. A man came saying that he loaned someone money a year ago, and it was now Shawwal, and time to pay up. Umar asked the man which Shawwal he was talking about, this present one, or one year ago, or two. The man didn’t know.

So Umar got all his advisors together to work on the problem of calculating and recording time. Someone said to use the Roman calendar, but they didn’t use that. Then someone said to use the Persian calendar, but they didn’t use that. What they decided was to make a new calendar, based off of the 12 months that Allah already created in the year.

{Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve (lunar) months in the register of Allah (from) the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion (i.e. way), so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous (who fear Him)} (Chapter 9, verse 36)
