BSc (Hons) Psychology Year Reading List 2011-12
Throughout your time studying on the Psychology degree at the MMU you will be
encouraged to read extensively. There is no single core text for this course because you will
study different topic areas in psychology and each area requires specialised reading which is
typically not provided by general psychology text books that you may have used at A level or
in your previous study experience. Furthermore, textbooks tend to be written from a given
viewpoint whereas the discipline of Psychology aims to provide students with examples of
varying viewpoints therefore readings will be suggested from a variety of sources. However,
it is useful to have some basic texts for reference, so students may wish to purchase one or
more of the following recommended text books, and supplement this with reading suggested
by tutors during the year or referenced in your lecture handouts (often available from the
University library).
The list below is not exhaustive but suggests texts for purchase and other recommended
texts for each of the units you will study in your first year on the Psychology degree. Many of
these texts will also be useful throughout Years 2 and 3.
Note: Past students often advertise second hand text books for sale via the ‘student to
student’ noticeboard during the first few weeks of term.
