    Philippine Etymology

     The name of the Philippines is a truncated form of The Philippine Islands, derived from theKing Philip II of Spain in the 16th century. During the expedition of uy !"pe# de $illalo%os tothe Islands, Spanish sailor &ernardo de la Torre used the name !as Islas 'ilipinas in honour of the then(Prince of )sturias, originally referring to the islands of !eyte and Samar. Despite thepresence of other names, the name 'ilipinas *Philippines+ as eventually adopted as thename of the entire archipelago.

     The o-cial name of the Philippines, hoever, has changed throughout the course of itshistory.
