Philippine Etymology
The name of the Philippines is a truncated form of The Philippine Islands, derived from theKing Philip II of Spain in the 16th century. During the expedition of uy !"pe# de $illalo%os tothe Islands, Spanish sailor &ernardo de la Torre used the name !as Islas 'ilipinas in honour of the then(Prince of )sturias, originally referring to the islands of !eyte and Samar.
