Today we are learning to:

- Identify environmental factors that may affect habitats

- Write your arguments for your persuasive text using sentences

- Practise our 6’s facts using different strategies

- Summarise a book you have read at home

- Investigate distances

I will need: An exercise book, pencil/whiteboard, whiteboard markers.

You do NOT have to print any pages as all activities can be completed with the materials listed above.

Reading Comprehension Summarising Using a book you already have, answer the following questions:

1. Can you remember three interesting facts from the text you have

just read? Write each of the facts down.

2. If you were to tell another person about this text in a few sentences, what would you tell them?

3. Create a drawing that summarises what you have just read in the text.

Daily Writing: Complete the task below in your exercise book. You will continue to add to

Your Task today:

1. Continuing from your introduction that you wrote yesterday, you are now going to

write a paragraph to support your first argument. Remember to look back at your

hamburger dot point planning from Monday.

2. Your paragraph must include:

- A supporting sentence (Example: Firstly, everyone knows that dogs are the most

loyal of pets).

- Examples as to why you think this (e.g. they will sit with you when you are sick, they

love to spend time with you, play with you and they will guard your house).

- You should include 3-4 sentences for each paragraph (argument)

3. Continue with writing your second and third arguments to support your opinion.

Make sure you start your next argument with a new paragraph. All arguments

should include a supporting sentence and evidence to prove your opinion.

EXAMPLE:

Is It Safe to Ride a Bike to School? Riding your bike is a great way to stay fit and healthy. However, many people think it

is too dangerous to ride your bike to school unsupervised because of the traffic.

Many people believe if you ride to school, that it should be with an adult.

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree?

Perhaps you can think of ideas for both side of this argument.

Maths Lesson

Investigating distances

1. Complete the sentences with words from the box:

Look at the map of a classroom below.

2. a. In this classroom, how many student desks are there?

b. Describe where the storage area is?

c. You have a small robot that needs a list of directions to move from the teacher’s desk to the

yellow beanbag, across to the sink and then return to the teacher’s desk. Write a list of directions

for the robot to follow.

d. Choose a desk that you would sit at. Work out the shortest distance from ‘your desk’, to the sink,

across to the storage area and back to the desk.

3. Look at the map below of Gloria’s office building.

a. Use the scale (1 square = 1m) to help you write the actual dimensions on the drawing.

b. Describe the path you would have to follow to get to the Toilets from Office 3.

Science Lesson

All living things need a variety of factors to stay alive and grow. All animals and plants have

SIMILAR basic needs, including the need for air and water. Some needs are different and depend

on the type of animal or plant and where it lives.

An environment is the living and

non-living surroundings of a living

thing, including the factors that

can influence its growth and

survival.

A habitat is a place in an

environment where an organism

usually lives.

There are many things that can

affect the life cycle of living

things:

Temperature

Plants in the environment

Animals in the environment

Change in the environment

Nutrient supply

Amount of light

Amount of water

Type of soil

Quality of soil

Some factors include: amount of

water, amount of sunlight,

temperature.

Environmental factors can affect

the life cycle of both plants and

animals.

Week 4 Activity Look at the pictures of different habitats. Identify some of the possible environmental

factors of each habitat and explain your thinking. Use the information provided to you in the

‘Information Sheet’ to help complete the task. The first habitat has been completed for you.
