The Little Blue Horse

Clare was Abby’s best friend. When she went to Abby’s place, they always played with Abby’s horses. Clare and Abby would make the horses go across the table and jump over little fences. The horse that Abby liked best was a little blue one with a long white tail. Abby was always careful when she played with it. She didn’t want her best horse to get broken. But one day, the little blue horse slipped out of Clare’s hand and a leg broke off. Clare looked down at the little blue horse. She started to cry. “Don’t cry, Clare,” said Abby’s mum. “I can glue the leg on again.”Clare and Abby watched as mum tried to fix the horse. “Soon your horse will be as good as new,” said Mum. But when the glue was dry, the little blue horse kept falling over. They could not get the blue horse to stay on its feet. Clare and Abby were very sad. The next Saturday, Clare was in town with her dad. They stopped to look in a shop window. Clare could see a lot of old things. She saw some old teddy bears and some old books.

Ant City

Georgia waited. She sat on the steps and waited. School was out for the days, and her mom would be home soon. Georgia’s big brother Danny was supposed to be looking after her. But he was playing basketball with his friends in the yard around the corner. Georgia waited. She looked up at the big clock. It was going very slowly. She watched the buses and the cars rushing along the street. When the lights turned red, the buses and the cars all stopped. But when the lights turned green, they roared away again.“Hey, Georgia,” called Becky from her window upstairs. “Isn’t your mum home yet?” Georgia shock her head and pretended that she didn’t care. But her mum was late today, and she did care. Georgia took a cracker out of her school bag. “How long can I make this cracker last?” she said to herself, and she began to eat it slowly. Some crumbs fell on the step by her feet.

Georgia looked down. One of the crumbs began to move! It went into a crack in the step and disappeared. Georgia was surprised. Then she saw lots of ants running towards the other crumbs. One by one, the ants picked up the crumbs, and carried them back to the crack in the step.Georgia put her hands under the stone on the step. She wiggled the stone and it began to move. Georgia wiggled it a bit more until at last she could lift the stone right up. Ants were running everywhere. “Wow!” she said. What are you doing, Georgia?” said Danny, who had come back to see her. “Come and look at this. Some ants have made a city right here under the step.” said Georgia.Danny bent down to have a look. The ants were rushing about, but they didn’t make any noise. Georgia looked down at her ant city. “Hey, Georgia!” called Becky from her window upstairs, “Your mum’s coming!”The time had gone very quickly.

Reading Challenge- PurpleLooking After Their Young

ReptilesReptiles lay their eggs in a safe place away from predators. As soon as the young reptiles hatch from the eggs, they are able to look after themselves. Some reptiles look after their young more than this. Mother crocodiles keep their eggs warm in a nest of sand. When the young crocodiles hatch, the mother crocodile carries them to the water in her mouth.

FishMost young fish look after themselves. When fish hatch from eggs they are easy to catch and many get eaten by predators. Some fish lay lots of eggs so their young have a chance of surviving.

InsectsInsects hatch from eggs. Most young insects look after themselves. They are able to do this because the female insect lays her eggs on the plant or animals the young will need for food.
