How to support your child with their reading

Why are we here today?

Reading with your child is vital. Research shows that it's the single most important thing you can do to help your child's education. It's best to read little and often, so try to put aside some time for it every day.

• Today we will cover all the stages of reading in Key Stage 1, from early reading to fluent reading.

• We will start with some basic phonics information to help you understand how the children learn their sounds at school.

• We will think about reading for a purpose in everyday situations and how to create the best reading environment.

• We will then walk through an Oxford Reading Tree book and a short story, discussing the best way to approach reading them.

• I will then try to answer any questions that you may have.

• You will get to take away a teaching guide to assist you in reading with your child at home

We are going to listen to the articulation of the phonemes that we teach in school, to help you say them in the same way.

Please join in!

• Encourage your child to read in everyday situations, for example in the supermarket, place names on buses and menu’s in restaurants.

• Take your child to the library as often as possible! As well as borrowing books, you can also use the internet for free and borrow DVD’s and CD’s.

Reading Progression

• Picture Book – only if they cannot read at all

• Phonic Starter – books with words that they can sound out using their phonics

• Short Story Books – Oxford Reading Tree type books.

The Reading Environment

• Is the television off?• Is the space quiet?• Is the child sitting comfortably?

Top tips to sum up…

• Before you read, make sure it is quiet and calm.

• Look at pictures first to warm up the text.• Give children the opportunity to self-correct.• Give time to think (count to 5 in your head

before you offer the word).• Encourage and praise, especially if the word

they use is wrong but shows good understanding.

• Use every opportunity you can to make reading fun!
