Annual Physicians’ Training ProgramLargest Ever

Nearly 70 physicians and nursesfrom 25 countries traveled toNorfolk, Va., to participate in Operation Smile's annualPhysicians' Training Program(PTP) from May 28-June 8. Since1987, this conference has been acritical component of OperationSmile's training and educationinitiatives. To date, more than 700medical professionals have beenbrought to Norfolk to participate inthis program. PTP gives physiciansfrom Operation Smile missioncountries the opportunity to learnnew techniques and to expandtheir knowledge through lectures,lab rotations, and operating roomobservation. PTP includes plastic

surgeons, anesthesiologists and pediatricians, and this year expanded to include dentists andnurses. Anesthesiologists, pediatricians, dentists and nurses participated in a variety of AmericanHeart Association training programs, such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), PediatricAdvanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS), organized by Tidewater Center forLife Support and Operation Smile. The goal of PTP is to train medical professionals to care forchildren in their own countries, furthering Operation Smile's mission of helping its partnercountries attain self-sufficiency.

Part of PTP includes specialty training atOperation Smile partner institutions. Nursestrained at Old Dominion University in Norfolk,dental participants trained at the University ofMaryland Dental School in Baltimore, Md.,anesthesia participants were in Washington,D.C. at George Washington University, pediatric participants trained in Philadelphia,Penn. at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia,and plastic surgery participants traveled toDuke University in Durham, N.C.

Conference on the AmericasIn Arlington, Va., on July 9, President and Mrs. Bush hosted “A Conference on the Americas.”With the theme of "Advancing the Cause of Social Justice in the Americas," the conferenceincluded representatives of approximately 150 regional-based organizations and 100 UnitedStates-based groups. Operation Smile Co-founder and CEO Dr. Bill Magee and OperationSmile Regional Vice President of Latin America Ellen Agler attended the all-day conference.Dr. Magee addressed the audience and discussed Operation Smile’s work in the region and itsrecent partnership with the USNS Comfort to help children in Nicaragua, Peru and Colombia.The conference focused on sharing lessons learned on how to promote education, healthcare,and economic opportunity at the grassroots level, and public-private partnerships throughoutthe hemisphere.

First Lady Laura Bush spoke to participants andacknowledged Operation Smile’s volunteers whowork to repair cleft lips and cleft palates in theregion. President Bush said, “It's in our interests,in the interests of the United States that ourneighborhood be healthy and educated. And sothis conference is an attempt to bring togetherkey people of my administration and faith-basedgroups and private sector groups from theUnited States, as well as our neighborhood, todiscuss how we can work together to promotesocial justice, to help people realize a better lifethrough good education and good health care.”

Message from our Co-foundersAs we approach November’s World Journey of Smiles, there is muchanticipation and excitement within the organization. After several yearsof planning and preparing for this initiative, it is now around the corner.We are back from trips throughout Asia and Latin America and will betraveling to Europe, the Middle East and Africa soon, meeting with ourboards, volunteers and staff in our partner countries who are gearing upfor this milestone.

The World Journey of Smiles is an event unlike any other, a unique initiative,with 1,500 skilled volunteers in 40 sites in 25 countries dedicating November7-16 to change the lives of approximately 5,000 children. The World Journeyof Smiles is possible because of our accomplishments over the last 25 years.We hope our volunteers take a step back and realize what their effortsthrough the years have made possible. The World Journey of Smiles willenable us to get more people involved and bring attention to our cause –that every child has access to health care. Our focus and message remainsthe same 25 years after Operation Smile began.

We know not everyone can serve as a medical volunteer, but we ask you tojoin us for the World Journey of Smiles. Be a part of changing the lives of5,000 children worldwide who may never know your name, but will neverforget your kindness. Students from Around the World Gatherfor Conference in IrelandHundreds of students from high schools and colleges around the world metat the University of Limerick in Limerick, Ireland for Operations Smile’s 15thannual International Student Leadership Conference (ISLC). This conferencehas two distinct programs, the Mission Training Workshop, from July 27-29,and the International Student Leadership Conference, from July 30-August 3,both of which encourage students to embrace a lifetime of volunteerism athome and in the global community.

Forty-two students from 11 United States, Ireland, Paraguay and SouthAfrica participated in the Mission Training Workshop, which trains studentsto effectively teach basic health care presentations to families and patientsduring Operation Smile international medical missions. The majority of thestudents trained will participate on international medical missions takingplace in November 2007 during Operation Smile’s World Journey of Smiles.

Nearly 400 students from 20 United States and 15 other countries participatedin the ISLC. The conference offers students an overview of Operation Smile’swork around the world and teaches them how to be leaders, learningconfidence, public speaking, fund-raising, and club organization. Highlightsincluded hearing from Paul Gleeson, who was voted “Limerick Man of theYear” for paddling a canoe across the Atlantic and former Irish Ambassadorto Thailand Dan Mulhall who served during the tsunami disaster in Asia.Additionally, participants were inspired by renowned motivational speakersRobert Pruitt and Dan Clark.

Shanghai International PlasticSurgery Conference ProvidesEducational Exchange andPromotes Volunteerism

The Second Shanghai International Plastic Surgery Conference,co-sponsored by Operation Smile and the Shanghai NinthPeople’s Hospital, was held in Shanghai, China, from April18-20. Operation Smile Co-founder and CEO Dr. Bill Magee and Dr. Yilin Cao of the Ninth People’s Hospital co-chaired theconference, and the scientific committee was headed by Dr. LiuWei of the Ninth People’s Hospital and Dr. W.P. Andy Lee of theUniversity of Pittsburgh.

More than 300 medical professionals, most from China, attendedthe conference. World famous plastic surgeons from Australia,China, Europe, Japan, Korea, Singapore and the United Statesgave instructional lectures on the latest advancements in cleftlip and cleft palate surgery, craniofacial surgery, microsurgery,reconstructive surgery and aesthetic surgery.

From July 24-27, Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) held its inaugural program in neighboring Swaziland. Basic Life Support (BLS) trainingwas provided to doctors and nurses across the country, 117 participants completed the course. The BLS Healthcare Provider Course is designed toprovide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide cardio-pulimary resuscitation(CPR), use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. SharpMinds’ trainers ElaineAbraham and Wynand Coreejes, led by director Corrie Botha, faculty member of the Resuscitation Council of South Africa, donated their timeconducting the training at four Swaziland hospitals.

OSSA has a long-term partnership with SharpMinds, a South African Training Academy that specializes in Emergency Care Programs and emergencycare equipment. The U.S. Embassy in Swaziland played an integral role in the program, spearheaded by Annalize Schouten from their Health Unitand a registered BLS trainer. Swazi Trails provided free transportation for the trainers around Swaziland, and Hellmann Worldwide Logistics (Pty)Ltd., a corporate partner of OSSA, transported the BLS equipment to and from Johannesburg at no cost.

OSSA and the Kingdom of Swaziland’s Minister of Health and Social WelfareDepartment are currently working together on an awareness campaignthroughout the country in preparation for a medical mission next year.

Message from our Chief Medical Officer

Throughout our first 25 years, Operation Smile has dedicated itself to providing the highest standards of medical care possible to our patients when performing reconstructive surgical services throughout the world,always keeping safety and quality at the forefront. To celebrate our Silver Anniversary, we are moving forwardto formalize and implement a Global Standard of Care, an eleven point program which will strive to insure thatno matter where an Operation Smile medical mission takes place, every patient treated will benefit from thesame sophisticated equipment, procedures, and highly trained and credentialed medical staff. This auspiciousgoal has been made possible by the overwhelming dedication of our extraordinary volunteers and headquarterssupport staff. No one has been more emblematic in that regard than our previous Chief Medical Officer, RobRubin. During his recently completed tenure, starting in 2002, Rob instilled a comprehensive sense of professionalism over all aspects of our mission, educational and research programs. He was a skilled

anesthesiologist, an insightful administrator and inspirational leader. When he assumed the CMO role five years ago, Dr. Rubin said,“Our volunteers are our heart and soul. For nearly 10 years, I have felt privileged and honored to be among them. Now, as CMO, I’mcommitted to holding our policies and procedures to the very highest standards and to providing the best equipment and safestguidelines to our mission countries.”

Under Dr. Rubin’s leadership, Operation Smile and its medical programs have advanced forward significantly and he has set the stage for embarking on our next 25 years. So, with great thanks andmuch sadness, we want to recognize and honor him as he has made the decision to complete his tenure.Co-founder and CEO Dr. Bill Magee acknowledged Rob’s contributions in saying, “Thanks to Rob, ourmedical programs now reflect a strong Global Standard of Care in everything from the credentialingprocess to standardization of medical equipment and supplies. Rob has laid the groundwork for so many things to build upon and we thank him for his dedication, commitment and service.”

I am deeply honored and have gladly accepted the opportunity to contribute to an organization whichhas given so much to me over the last two decades. Our success will depend on a continued commitmentto restoring hope in all of those that we care for, communicating openly with each other, and cherishingthe extraordinary gift that we have been given to participate in such a noble enterprise. I can’t think of a more wonderful family to be part of than Operation Smile. I look forward to working with you all.

In my new position as your chief medical officer, I have come to realize the importance of developing leadership and decision makingcloser to our fields of operation. As we continue to grow and evolve to increasing autonomy and sustainability by our membernations, we must encourage growth in the local, national and regional leaders to drive the process forward in ways that we cannotfully appreciate from afar. In this regard, we have decided to increase our medical oversight administrators according to regional focus. Our new Regional Medical Officers (RMOs) include: Dr. Willie Go in Asia, Dr. Lucio Auler in Latin America, and Dr. MarinaSammartino in the Central Region. These RMOs will take charge of medical quality assurance matters by reviewing each missionprofile, analyzing equipment needs, site preparations, staffing needsand professional credentialing issues. Our goal is to allow the RMOsto aid the overall mission goals of Operation Smile by insuring best possible practices in each region with conformance to our GlobalStandards but with added understanding that only they possess as tothe unique needs of each particular area. Please join me in welcomingthem and once again thanking all of the volunteers and extraordinaryfulltime staff, both in Norfolk and in each of our regional and in-countrynational offices for the great work that each and everyone of themcontinues to do on behalf of all of our patients.

Old Dominion University Becomes Newest Partner Institution

Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Va., and Operation Smileannounced a new partnership on May 30, marking the formal beginningof collaborative efforts between the university and the organization. ODUHealth Sciences Dean Andrew Balas and Operation Smile Co-foundersDr. Bill and Kathy Magee presided over the signing ceremony at ODU,attended by more than 60 international physicians and nurses who wereattending Operation Smile’s Physicians’ Training Program (PTP). As partof the agreement, ODU faculty and resources will be utilized in a varietyof capacities.

“The roles of nurses in Operation Smile's humanitarian medical missionsare immense,” said Ann Campbell, a senior lecturer in the ODU Schoolof Nursing and Operation Smile medical volunteer. “With our College ofHealth Sciences and nursing faculty, we have so many resources to offer.”

From May 30-June 1, five nurses from Bolivia, Cambodia, Ecuador,Nicaragua and Venezuela participated in scenario-based workshops, observednursing classes and received advanced-skills training in ODU’s HealthSciences Building.

Operation Smile Joins U.S. Navy to Help Children in Latin America

Operation Smile joined the United States Navy’s hospital ship, USNS Comfort, during its summer 2007 humanitarian assistancedeployment. In June, USNS Comfort began its 120-day deployment to provide humanitarian services to 12 countries in LatinAmerica and the Caribbean. Operation Smile joined the mission in Nicaragua, Peru and Colombia.

“Planning for this mission has incorporated various non-government organizations and government agencies, such as Operation Smile,Project Hope, the Atlanta Rotary Club, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Health and Human Services. This is truly a jointmilitary/civilian operation,” said Capt. Bob Kapcio, Comfort’s mission commander.

The first mission stop involving Operation Smile was in Corinto,Nicaragua, July 18-25. Free medical evaluations were conducted inChinandega by Operation Smile volunteers at Hospital España toidentify surgical patients, who were then transported aboard theship. Operation Smile medical volunteers worked side-by-sidewith Navy personnel and conducted three days of surgery,helping 30 children.

In Salaverry, Peru, from August 6-13, Operation Smilevolunteers provided free medical evaluations at Hospital Belento identify surgical patients. The ship was anchored offshoreand the Peruvian Navy and Coast Guard transported patientsto the ship and back. Operation Smile’s medical team workedwith Navy personnel and provided 24 children with surgery.

From August 22-28 while USNS Comfort was in Bueanaventura,Colombia, Operation Smile medical volunteers from Colombiaworked at Hospital Departamental de Buenaventura andprovided 95 free medical evaluations and two days ofsurgery to 53 children.

While in Peru, the three new Smile Ambassadorsparticipated in all team activities, played with waiting children, tookpatient photos and assisted with medical records.

Molly Sims, best known for her role on the popular TV show “Las Vegas”,co-hosted Operation Smile's The Smile Collection fund-raising gala in NewYork alongside “Access Hollywood” co-anchor and Operation Smile Boardof Governors member Billy Bush in 2006. About her recent trip to Peru shesaid, “Operation Smile volunteers are wonderful, beautiful people thatchange children's lives. This experience with Operation Smile in Perutouched our hearts and made us realize how truly lucky we are, and howlucky these people are to have Operation Smile in their lives.”

Canadian-born actor Justin Chatwin, best-known for his roles in the StevenSpielberg film “War of the Worlds” and the 2007 film “The Invisible,” joinedthe mission as well. He commented, “Operation Smile brings so much morethan new smiles to children. For me it was the most thrilling, organized, andlife enriching charity experience I've had.”

Musician Benj Gershman, the bassist for the American rock band O.A.R.,noted of his experience, “It is amazing what people will do for otherswhen motivated by the right reasons. I'm grateful for the opportunity tosupport Operation Smile during its 25th Anniversary, as the organizationenters into a new era in changing children’s lives.”

Operation Smile Colombia Inaugurates Comprehensive Care Center

Operation Smile Colombia inaugurated its new Center for Integral Attention in Bogotá – the Gilberto Mariño Centro de AtenciónIntegral – with a ceremony on April 16 including an official ribbon cutting by Carlos Arturo Vargas, President of Operation SmileColombia’s Board of Directors. The Operation Smile Colombia Center is one of seven centers to be opened this year in OperationSmile partner countries across the globe as part of the organization’s anniversary celebration. Surgeries during World Journey ofSmiles will take place at this center.

The Center will treat children year-round who suffer from cleft lips and cleft palates as well as provide education and training tomedical professionals in the region. It will include an operating and recovery room as well as rooms for medical, dental, speechtherapy, and psychological consultations. Operation Smile Colombia has been providing follow-up care to its patients in the formof dentistry, speech therapy, psychology, genetics, and medical consultations for several years. The new Center will allow them toexpand their services and provide the most up-to-date cleft lip and palate care. The Center is the result of much effort and supportprovided by professionals, private groups, contributors, volunteers, and the participation of patients and their families.

Since March, Operation Smile has been conducting a CriticalNursing Skills Training Program, a three day intensive trainingprogram for pre/post-operative, operating room, and recoveryroom nurses. This program is assisting in-country local nursesfrom Operation Smile partner countries in their understandingof material through a series of tests, practical applicationdemonstrations, and competency check lists. The concept is toteach the critical skills of pre/post, operating room, and recoveryroom nursing with the goal of implementing a standard level ofnursing knowledge and care necessary to deliver safe patientcare during all medical missions performed under the auspicesof Operation Smile. Nurses and longtime Operation Smile volunteers Cindi Raglin, R.N.C. from Virginia Beach, Va., LuciaMauer, R.N., B.S.N. from Seattle, Wash., and Linda Highfield,R.N., C.N.O.R. from Columbus, Ohio, created the curriculum andserved as trainers for the program in many countries.

Operation Smile Senior Manager of Education Dr. Luis Bermudez,said, “The Critical Nursing Skills Training Program is an importantcomponent of Operation Smile’s goal for its partner countries to attain self-sufficiency and provide the highest standard of

care during both Operation Smile international and in-countrylocal missions.”

Nurses from 20 of Operation Smile’s partner countries are takingpart in the training. At the conclusion of this program in October,more than 1,000 nurses in 20 countries will have been trainedand many nurses identified to serve as in-country trainers forthis program in the future.

Over the years, Operation Smile’s needs have changed and grown as theorganization expanded its reach into more countries. Photographers Melanie Dunea and Nigel Parry have takenaward-winning images and portraits of celebrities, politicalfigures and other influential people in the public eye.These two New York based photographers have supportedOperation Smile for more than five years, traveling onmedical missions to Brazil, China, India and Kenya documenting the organization’s work and the childrenhelped. Some of their amazing images were compiled in a book, “A Journey of Smiles,” for Operation Smile thatwas published in May.

Pulse of Africa Collectionby Lladró to BenefitOperation Smile

Lladró, the renowned Spanish House of Porcelain,has for the second year joined with Operation Smileto help change the lives of children around the world.Throughout 2007, Lladró pledges to raise up to$200,000, including the donation of 10% of the retailprice of each item in the Pulse of Africa collectionsold from February 1-December 31, 2007.

Lladró hosted a gala reception at the Beverly Hills Lladró Boutique on May 24, tounveil the new High Porcelain collection, consisting exclusively of limited editionpieces. The highlight of the collection is the “Queen of the Nile,” a spectacular 152centimeters long composition, recreating the look of an Egyptian boat. Retailing for$135,000, the piece took five years to develop, 400 hours to paint, and 150 hours to assemble. The complex creation is brought to lifeby 12 characters creating a number of lively scenes. Children Receive Surgery as Part of World Care Program

Gonzalo Rodriguez Lopez and Corina Davila Sanchez have three sons and live in El Bambu, Nicaragua. Two of their children,Domingo, 9, and Yilber, 6 months, were both born with facial deformities. Domingo suffered from a cleft lip and Yilber had a cleft lipand a cleft palate. In April 2007, the pastor of their church drove the family 10 hours to Managua to be seen by medical volunteersduring an Operation Smile local medical mission. The medical volunteers discovered Yilber was sick and could not receive surgery.Working with its foundation in Nicaragua, Operation Smile determined Domingo and Yilber would be brought in May to the UnitedStates to receive surgery during Operation Smile’s annual Physicians’ Training Program. Operation Smile brought Corina, Domingoand Yilber to the United States and on June 5, Domingo and Yilber received reconstructive surgery at Children’s Hospital of TheKing’s Daughters in Norfolk, Va.

The Dye family of Virginia Beach hosted the three during their stay, with help from the Clifford family. Brigette Magee Clifford, is oneof the daughters of Operation Smile’s Co-founders Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee. During their stay, the group met students from AlantonElementary in Virginia Beach, who recently raised more than $25,000 for Operation Smile.

Corina, Domingo and Yilber flew home to Nicaragua on June 12 and Operation Smile Nicaragua will complete any needed follow-upcare. The family is happy to now have three sons with beautiful smiles.

The World Care Program is a part of Operation Smile’s annual Physicians’ Training Program, a program that broughtmore than 70 physicians and nurses from 25 countries to Norfolk from May 28-June 8. During this medical educationconference, physicians and nurses have the opportunity to expand their knowledge through lectures, lab rotations, andsurgery observations of the World Care patients. To date, Operation Smile has treated more than 200 children in theUnited States, Australia, Italy, and Ireland through the World Care Program.

The evening raisedalmost $4 million and included cocktails, dinner,dancing, an auction and a couture fashion showby J. Mendel. Supermodel Naomi Campbell and“Access Hollywood’s” Billy Bush served as co-hosts.The Smile Collection Executive Committee chairswere Vanessa and Donald Trump Jr.

After dinner, the crowd enjoyed a fashion showfeaturing looks from J. Mendel’s line. Expert makeup artist Francois Nars and celebrity hair stylist David Evangelista made the models lookamazing. Caracas, Venezuela Oscar D’León, an internationally recognized Venezuelan salsa singer,is Operation Smile’s first Latin American celebrity to join as a 25thAnniversary Smile Ambassador. D’León joins a growing roster of artistsand celebrities helping to raise awareness of Operation Smile’s work.

On June 6, D’León performed for more than 500 people at the “Let’s Smile with Oscar D’León” concert, raising more than $30,000for Operation Smile Venezuela.

D’León said, “I have so much passion for this organization andthe children that need help. As an artist, I will continue doingeverything possible to raise awareness about this important causein order to bring these children a smile to their face and a chanceat a better and healthier life.”

D’León has recorded a televised public service announcement forOperation Smile Venezuela. He is planning to join an OperationSmile medical mission team to Barinas, Venezuela, during the WorldJourney of Smiles in November.

Hong KongOperation Smile China Medical Mission, Ltd. (OSCMM) held theOperation Smile Silver Jubilee Charity Gala on June 18 at theConrad Hong Kong Hotel, raising more than HK$2.5 million. Theevent celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Operation Smile and the16th Anniversary of OSCMM. The OSCMM Board of Directors,along with Operation Smile Co-founders, Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee,welcomed the guest of honor, Ms. Sandra Lee, J.P., PermanentSecretary for Health and Welfare. One of the most touchingmoments for the 350 guests who attended the gala was a videomessage by popular Chinese actor Li Ya-Peng. He and his wife,Faye Wong, a famous singer, have a daughter born with a cleft lipwho was brought to the United States for surgery.

Dearborn, Michigan The third annual Journey of Smiles fundraiser hosted by OperationSmile Southeast Michigan was held June 9 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.More than 300 guests enjoyed a reception, dinner, silent and liveauctions and dancing.

The crowd heard from Wayne Zinn, Operation Smile Chief OperatingOfficer and Chief Information Officer, and keynote speakers, Brianand Jennifer Ellis, whose son was born with a cleft lip and cleftpalate. The Ellises, of Farmington Hills, discussed how fortunatethey feel to live in a country where medical care is readily availableand accessible.

The Corporate Humanitarian Award was presented to WJBK-TVFOX 2 News, which sent a news crew to Honduras and filmed amedical mission. The station also covered “Mercy’s Story,” whichfeatured an Operation Smile World Care patient from Kenya, boththe year she was here for medical treatments, a subsequent visit bya physician to her village and, in 2006, when she was brought backto Detroit for a holiday. In 2006, FOX 2 won an Emmy for its“Mercy’s Story” specials.

Iraqi Child Receives Life-Changing Surgery

Rayan Faeq from Iraq suffered from ankylosis of the left temporomandibular, asevere deformity of the mouth that limited her ability to open it. As a result,Rayan had difficulty eating, drinking, and even breathing. She was malnourishedand extremely small for her age. Her jaw deformity also inhibited her ability tosleep, causing her to stop breathing in the middle of the night.

While deployed in Iraq as chief of a Military Transition Team, U.S. ArmyLieutenant Colonel Dennis Chapman was approached by the Kurdish RegionalGovernment who was seeking humanitarian assistance for Rayan’s family. Whilehis team was unable to provide care for Rayan, Chapman contacted his U.S.Congressman from Michigan, Representative Mike Rogers in December 2006.A Washington, D.C., law firm, which has previously worked with OperationSmile, learned of Rayan’s case and contacted the organization. Operation Smileinitiated an assessment of Rayan’s conditions through Dr. Eaman T. AL-Gobory,National Medical Officer for the International Organization for Migration in Iraq.In March 2007, Rayan and her father traveled to Baghdad to be diagnosed by Dr.AL-Gobory and Rayan became an Operation Smile World Care patient candidate.Operation Smile Jordan was instrumental in facilitating logistics for Rayan andher family. Congressman Trent Franks from Arizona, born with a cleft lip andcleft palate, has been involved with Operation Smile for several years and helpedobtain passports and visas for Rayan’s trip to the United States.

Rayan’s mother, Parwin Hama Ali, left her other five children with her husband in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, to travel withRayan to the United States. Rayan received surgery on June 11 at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Virginia. Dr. BillMagee, Co-Founder and CEO of Operation Smile, led the surgery which included taking sections of her skull to reconstruct herjaw and move it forward. After the nine hour surgery, Rayan was able to open her mouth normally and can now breathe and eatnormally as well. Her mother said, “This is a miracle.” Rayan and her mother stayed with Chip and Jodi Simkins and their fourchildren in Virginia Beach, Va. during her recovery. The two returned to Iraq in early July. In early August, Operation Smile CMODr. Randy Sherman was in Iraq and after evaluating her said she is doing very well.
