    Dear Readers,

This presentation is prepared for those of the beginner level who want to learn about DSLRPhotography.

This will help you understand the meaning of photography, exposure, DSLR camera body, lensesand the basic composition in photography.

In addition, there are a few collections of photographs by two famous photographers whom I mostadmire.

None of those pictures, photos and article in this presentation is my own. They are all from the internet.

I hope this will help you to understand the basic DSLR photography with no difficulty.

    Thank you all.

Q: What is the meaning of the word 'photography'?

A: The literal meaning is "Writing (graphy) with light (photo)".

The term comes from The Greek word phos, photos - lightand graphos - writing.

The word photography means writing with light but most photographers claim theyare painting with light!

This 'writing with light' or as us photographers say ' painting with light' was firstreputed to have been termed by Sir John Herschel to William Henry Fox

Talbotin letter in 1839. Herschel was an English astronomer who also devised thewords negative and positive and I believe the word snapshot. A lot of his work

involved chemistry which was the forerunner of the black and white processes.Henry Fox Talbot was the inventor of the negative positive process ofphotography. He was an English gentleman, chemist, mathematician, linguist andarcheologist.

    UNSERSTANDING EXPOSURE

    What is Exposure?

Your camera understands EXPOSURE, which is essentially the total amount of light entering your camera used to create the photo.

Exposure describes how light or how dark your photographs are

Under-exposure is when your photos come out too dark.

Over-exposure is when your photos come out too light, washed out or blown out.

    (L) Over-exposed Too bright. The white dog is blinding. Need sunglasses. (M) Under-exposed Too dark. The white dog looks like a

phantom. (R) Nice balance of light on the dog, bubbles and grass. Awwww! Precious.

But slightly Under and Over Exposed images can be great for artistic or stylistic reasons! Images that are technically considered

to be over or underexposed can be visually appealing:

(above) Both these beach images have elements of under and over

exposure. But stylistically, they can be quite beautiful from thecontrasts of light and dark.

(above) Lighter, brighter tomato or food images can look pretty

    when shot slightly over-exposed.

    SHUTTER SPEED (Controlling Motion)

What is the Shutter in your camera?

When you take a picture and you hear that click, that is the sound of your shutter opening and closing. Imagine the concept like shutters

on your window. You open and close the shutters to control the amount of light entering your room. Same idea goes for the camera.

    What is Shutter Speed?

Shutter speed is about TIME, the amount of time it takes for light to enter your camera, how long it takes to let light through the camera.

ISO SENSITIVITY (Controlling cameras light sensitivity)What is ISO on your camera?

ISO refers to how sensitive your camera is to light. Originally this referred to the film, but with digital cameras, the ISO sensitivity is in

    reference to the cameras sensor.

Basically, the more sensitive your camera is to light, the higher the ISO number, the more possible it is to shoot in low light situations.

Higher ISO number = higher sensitivity to light = better ability to shoot in low light

APERTURE (Controlling Depth of Field)What is Aperture?

Aperture is about the AMOUNT, the amount of light that enters your camera through the lens hole or the eye of the camera.

Once the light enters the hole opening in the lens, it then enters your camera

    18 % Grey

Camera meters are colour blind. They see everything in shades of grey from black to white and every shade in between. Halfway

between white and black is middle grey. Middle grey reflects 18% of light; this is why its called 18% grey. Camera meters are calibrated to

18% grey. Meaning, regardless of the type of metering, the meter will give a reading designed to photograph at 18% grey.

    WHITE BLANCEWhat is White Balance?

White balance is basically a way to measure the temperature of light and to balance out the colors of your photography for the desired

    results.

Ideally, the goal of a conventional photograph is to attain an ideal White Balance where the white color is as close to true, neutral white as

possible and all of the colors in your image are true to life.

At its simplest the reason we adjust white balance is to get the colors in your images as accurate as possible.

    1. f-numberFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In optics, the f-number(sometimes called focal ratio, f-ratio, f-stop, orrelative aperture) of an optical system is the ratio of the lens'sfocal length to the diameter ofthe entrance pupil. It is a dimensionless numberthat is a quantitative measure oflens speed, an important concept in photography.

    The f-number is given by

    Where

is the focal length, and is the diameter of the entrance pupil (effective aperture).

    Stops, f-stop conventions, and exposure

The term stop is sometimes confusing due to its multiple meanings. A stop can be a physical object: an opaque part of an optical system that blocks certain

rays. The aperture stop is the aperture that limits the brightness of the image by restricting the input pupil size, while a field stop is a stop intended to cut out

light that would be outside the desired field of view and might cause flare or other problems if not stopped.

TYPE OF LENSESMacro LensMany lenses carry the word macro' in their title but aren't. To be a true macro lens it must enable you to reproduce your subject at 1:1 lifesize on your sensor. Althoughyou still have great fun shooting close-ups with macro-lite' lenses that only offer half lifesize (1:2) or quarter lifesize (1:4), if you're really into exploring the world ofminiature things then there's no substitute for a proper macro lens.http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/advice/492817/complete-guide-to-choosing-lenses-macro-lenses.html

Fisheye LensA fisheye lens is an ultra wide-angle lens that produces strong visual distortion intended to create a wide panoramic orhemispherical image.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisheye_lens

Tilt-shift LensIn photography, a perspective control lens allows the photographer to control the appearance of perspective in the image; the lens can be moved parallel tothe film or sensor, providing the equivalent of corresponding view camera movements.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilt-shift_lenslens

Prime LenseIn film and photography, a prime lens is either a photographic lens whose focal length is fixed.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_lens

Zoom LensA zoom lens is a mechanical assembly of lens elements for which the focal length (and thus angle of view) can be varied.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoom_lens

Normal LensIn photography and cinematography, a normal lens is a lens that reproduces a field of view that generally looks "natural" to a human observer under normal viewingconditions. For a 35 mm camera with a diagonal of 43 mm, the most commonly used normallens is 50 mm, but focal lengths between about 40 and 58 mm are alsoconsiderednormal. The 50 mm focal length was chosen by Oskar Barnack, the creator of the Leica camera.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_lens

    Wide-angle Lens

In photography and cinematography, a wide-angle lens refers to a lens whose focal length is substantially smaller than the focal length of a normal lens for a given filmplane.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide-angle_lens

Telephoto LensIn photography and cinematography, a telephoto lens is a specific type of a long-focus lens in which the physical length of the lens is shorter than the focal length.
