The Victorian racing industry has

breathed a collective sigh of relief

after tests for Covid-19 of nearly

100 Cranbourne trainers and

stable staff were yesterday returned negative,

prompting “a business as usual” return to work

from this morning.

Fears of a shutdown of racing, which has

continued almost unabated since the coronavirus

pandemic swept through the nation in March,

came closer to a reality with the revelation that

an employee of trainer Richard Laming had last

week contracted Covid-19.

Group 1-winning trainer Wendy Kelly, who

oversees one of seven stables directly affected by

Friday’s scare at the Cranbourne Training Centre,

told of the relief upon being informed yesterday

that not only she and husband Kevin Kelly but

also her staff had returned negative results to the

virus tests. Continued on page 2>>

Laming, Trent Busuttin and Natalie

Young, Nathan Dunn, Michael Trotter, Adrian McGregor and Tom

Nikolic were also placed in lockdown on the advice of Racing Victoria’s

chief medical officer while jockeys Michael Walker, Jason Benbow

and apprentice Alexandra Bryan were stood down after riding work at

Cranbourne last week.

Walker and Bryan were able to ride at Moe yesterday after receiving

the results.

In total, 88 Cranbourne staff returned negative results for Covid-19.

Kelly said she was “ecstatic” after a difficult 36 hours not knowing

whether she could have been infected.

“The best way of putting it is, it’s been a bit stressful. Everyone is

very relieved this morning. All the tests have come back negative and it’s

business as usual (from today),” Kelly told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“The whole thing was handled extremely professionally and amazingly

swiftly. Everybody got together and it was a great team effort from Racing

Victoria, the stewards, Dr (Gary) Zimmerman, the medical staff and Neil

Bainbridge from the Cranbourne Turf Club as well as all our staff and all

the stables that were involved.

“They were all there, they all turned up, no one grizzled or anything

and had the tests done. It was really fantastic to see.”

Kelly was also forced to scratch stable newcomer Bons Away (Bon

Hoffa) from the Carlyon Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Moonee Valley, a race

that was later abandoned due to the heavy rain and state of the track,

because of the scare.

“As it turned out, it was probably a good thing. We didn’t have to

stand in the cold all day. We had planned to head to the McEwen after

the Carlyon, but (Racing Victoria) were perhaps talking about putting the

races on that they missed out on in a week or so,” she said.

“We will play it a little bit by ear and wait and see what Racing Victoria

comes up with or whether we head straight to the McEwen.”

As for Bons Away, Kelly said the seven-year-old gelding was thriving in

his new environment after being trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

“He’s had a faultless preparation, not one thing’s gone wrong with

him. I have been really happy with both his trials and Craig Newitt has

been really happy with him,” she said.

“We’ve got a little bit of luxury here … with the way we train, not that

there’s anything wrong with anyone else’s, but being an older horse he

gets out in a big day yard, so that helps with his joints.

“He came to us in fantastic order from Ciaron and he’d had a spell at

(owner) Ken King’s before he came over. He’s just a lovely horse with a

beautiful temperament and he is a great horse to work with.

“He is very much like his old man in that respect with his temperament.”

Meanwhile, eight of Laming’s employees who were identified as close

contacts of their sick colleague are required to isolate and complete 14

days quarantine as well as undergo a second Covid-19 test before being

allowed to return to work.

A deep clean of the Cranbourne Training Centre and stables directly

impacted was completed yesterday to allow work to resume.

Racing Victoria chief executive Giles Thompson took comfort from

the fact that the industry’s safety protocols appeared to be working.

“This underlines the importance and benefit of the strict biosecurity

protocols that we have had in place since mid-March to allow for the safe

conduct of over 1800 races here in Victoria,” Thompson said.

“I want to thank all of the impacted stables and their staff for their

swift actions since Friday night and their willingness to make important

sacrifices for the benefit of the industry during that period.

“I also want to extend the best wishes of all within the industry to

the stablehand that has tested positive to the virus. Our welfare staff are

engaged with the individual and will continue to support them throughout

the coming weeks.”

Thompson urged industry stakeholders to remain vigilant about the

dangers of coronavirus.

“This incident should serve as a timely reminder to all within our

industry of the critical importance of following both government directives

and our industry biosecurity protocols to ensure the safe continuation of

training and racing in Victoria,” he said.

“I once again implore everyone in our industry to continue doing the

right thing. If you or someone in your household is feeling unwell, don’t

go to work.”

Arcadia Queen to get Memsie chanceArcadia Queen (Pierro) will have her second

run since November when she steps out in

Saturday’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at

Caulfield. The Grant and Alana Williams-

trained Arcadia Queen was slightly one-paced

first-up when fifth to Savatiano (Street Cry)

in the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m),

but should take improvement for that effort.

She will be joined by stablemate Regal Power

(Pierro), who disappointed in the Lawrence

when ninth, with stable rider William Pike

to ride Regal Power; Damian Lane will once

again ride Arcadia Queen. Other likely runners

are Lawrence winner Savatiano, last-start

Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) victor Behemoth

(All Too Hard) and Group 1 winners Begood

Toya Mother (Myboycharlie), Gatting (Hard

Spun), Harlem (Champs Elysees), Mystic

Journey (Needs Further), Princess Jenni (High

Chaparral) and Streets Of Avalon (Magnus),

as well as three-year-old Glenfiddich (Fastnet

Rock).

San Domenico for impressive AndersAfter an impressive last-start win in The

Rosebud (Listed, 1100m), the Ciaron Maher

and David Eustace-trained Anders (Not A

Single Doubt) will face his biggest test in the

San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill

on Saturday. Anders led all the way to take out

the Rosebud by almost five lengths on a Heavy

9 surface and, on Saturday, will tackle not only

stronger opposition, but also a firmer track.

Among his rivals will be Kindergarten Stakes

(Gr 3, 1100m) winner Doubtland (Not A Single

Doubt), dual Group 1 placegetter Mamaragan

(Wandjina) and the highly-touted Peltzer (So

You Think).

Richards thrilled with ProbabeelReturning mare Probabeel (Savabeel)

produced one of the eye-catching runs of the

day at Randwick with her fast-finishing second

in the Show County Quality (Gr 3, 1200m),

with trainer Jamie Richards more than happy

with her performance over a trip shorter than

her best. “I couldn’t be more pleased with

Probabeel as she has come back really well for

this campaign,” he said. “She is not normally

a flash trialler so she did what we expected in

her two prep runs. They served their purpose in

helping with her fitness, so we were expecting

to see her go a good race. Watching the replay, I

do think with a touch more luck she might have

even got the victory. One thing that did work in

our favour was the improved track which suited

her perfectly. There are a couple of options for

her next including the Tramway Stakes in a

fortnight or the Bill Ritchie Handicap two weeks

after that, both at 1400 metres, but, until we see

how she comes through the run, we won’t be

looking too far ahead.”

Melody Belle gets pass mark

Melody Belle (Commands) may have finished

more than five lengths from Verry Elleegant

(Zed) in the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

but trainer Jamie Richards was not too

disheartened. “Melody Belle just didn’t have

the bird on her shoulder in that one so I’m

not going to worry too much about where she

finished up,” Richards said. “She got in quite a

good position early on but had Con Te Partiro

come back in her face approaching the turn

then she copped it twice in the straight as well.

She did make up some pretty good ground in

the last 100 metres so to see her finish off like

that was very pleasing. Her first run wasn’t as

bad as it looks on paper and now she has got

two races under her belt I think you will see

her getting back to her best. We also haven’t

mapped out a clear path for her although she

looks ready to start stepping up over more

ground. I think a race like the George Main

Stakes next month is an option but once again

we will wait and see her recovery rate before we

make that choice.”

The Bostonian to improve for fresh runTrainer Tony Pike believes his star sprinter The

Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) has plenty to offer

during his Sydney spring campaign following a

satisfactory first-up performance when seventh

in Saturday’s Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at

Randwick. “I was happy with his run as he

followed such a hot speed it told on him over

the closing stages, going 1400m first-up,” Pike

said. “I got the sectionals sent to me last night

and they were going pretty quick early on and

most of those who were up there around him

dropped out to the tail in the straight. He looked

like he was going to burst away at the top of the

straight but he probably just plateaued out after

peaking in the last furlong. He will improve a

heap off that, so I don’t think he was disgraced

by any means. We’ll press on from here once I

have worked it out with David (Archer) as there

are three or four paths we can take. There is

the Chelmsford Stakes in a fortnight and then

the George Main Stakes two weeks after that or

there are some shorter sprinting options later

on. We don’t really have a major target as the

money we are racing for in these types of races

is so good, winning just one of them would be

very worthwhile.”

River Run to join Catalyst in SydneyTony Pike is also looking forward to stable

foreman Chris McNab exiting the mandatory

quarantine period in Sydney next week so he

can take over looking after the stable’s team

that will be boosted by the arrival of progressive

stayer River Run (Pour Moi) and star four-year-

old Catalyst (Darci Brahma) shortly. “Chris

comes out of quarantine next Friday as he

knows our horses well,” he said. “The Bostonian

is at Bjorn Baker’s (Warwick Farm) stable at

the moment but when Chris is available, he

will take him to our Rosehill base. River Run

and Catalyst will hopefully join them on the

31st. River Run is nicely rated for Sydney racing

so I had a chat with his owners and we made

the decision to send him over. If he could pick

up a couple of Saturday wins it would make it

very worthwhile. We will also be looking after

Catalyst for Rick Williams and Dick Karreman

with (trainer) Clayton Chipperfield not being

able to travel so it would be good to get him over

there and pull off one of the big races for them.”

Bell looks to back-up plan for EdgeFew welcomed Melbourne’s wet weather like

trainer Mick Bell, but his rain dance for his stable

stalwart Jungle Edge (Dubawi) at Moonee Valley

on Saturday brought too much rain and saw the

meeting abandoned before the featured Carlyon

Stakes (Listed, 1000m), leaving the handler

“shattered”. “I was hopeful we’d win yesterday

and maybe get some more interest on a potential

Everest spot,” Bell told Racing.com. “I was

completely shattered yesterday. He’s a ten-year-

old now, opportunities like yesterday on tracks

that he loves don’t come around every day, but

you dust yourself off and we’ll just revert to plan

B now. I’ve put in a late entry for The Heath Stakes

next Saturday at Caulfield, or he could head to

the McEwen the following week. If the border

restrictions ease, we may head to Sydney for the

Group 3 Concorde Stakes on September 5.”

Race added to Caulfield cardAn open 2000-metre handicap will be added

to Saturday’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

undercard, taking the place of a 2040-metre

quality handicap that was not run at Moonee

Valley last Saturday after the meeting was

abandoned. “(Racing Victoria) has reviewed

the immediate opportunities for the horses

engaged in (last Saturday’s) races,” Racing

Victoria’s executive general manager of racing

Greg Carpenter told Racing.com. “In respect

to the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and

Carlyon Stakes (Listed, 1000m) these will not be

programmed in the short term after reviewing

the opportunities for those horses in the McNeil

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), the Benchmark 78 over

1100 metres and The Heath (Listed, 1100m) at

Caulfield this Saturday. Racing Victoria will work

with the Moonee Valley Racing Club to see if the

races can be rescheduled later in the season. It

was considered the open handicap (2000m) was

an important race for horses going to the quality

handicap (2500m) at Flemington on September

12 and targeting feature staying races during the

Spring Racing Carnival. Following an exemption

from Racing Victoria’s Covid-19 operational

management team and in consultation with the

Melbourne Racing Club, the 2000-metre race has

been added to the Memsie Stakes program to

make it a ten-race card.”

Victorian Horse of the Year finalists announcedFive of the best horses to race in Victoria during

the 2019-20 season will go head-to-head for the

title of Victorian Horse of the Year, as selected

by a 50-strong voting panel comprised of racing

media, Racing Victoria’s handicapping panel

and the chairman of stewards. Group 1-winning

sprinters Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) and

Nature Strip (Nicconi) are among the finalists,

as are Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Vow

And Declare (Declaration Of War), Japan’s

Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) heroine Lys Gracieux

(Heart’s Cry) and Australian Guineas (Gr 1,

1600m) victor Alligator Blood (All Too Hard).

Bathurst abandonedToday’s country NSW race meeting at Bathurst

has been postponed after a stewards inspection

yesterday found sections of the track unsuitable

for racing. Lismore, the other meeting

scheduled for NSW, is expected to go ahead.

Corboy fined for Covid breachA smile cost trainer Adrian Corboy $500 after

his charge Roland Garros (Helmet) won at

Moonee Valley on Saturday. Corboy was

beaming from ear to ear after Roland Garros

led all the way to score at $26, but his failure to

sport a mandatory face mask saw him hit with

the fine for breaching Covid-19 protocols.

NEW ZEALAND

Pike preparing for return of Group 1 starsTrainer Tony Pike was delighted with the

performance of several of his stable stars during

their trial efforts in the past fortnight, including

last season’s New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)

winner Sherwood Forest (Fastnet Rock) and

New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)

winner Loire (Redoute’s Choice). “Sherwood

Forest was good over the 1025 metres at Te

Teko,” he said. “He wobbled around the final

corner like he does going right-handed, but

the last bit of the trial and past the post was

super. We’ll work out where the trials are going

to be in the next little while but if that doesn’t

suit, he and Loire may go to Tauranga on

Saturday for an exhibition gallop together. I’m

leaning towards Loire going first-up into the

Tarzino Trophy at Hastings next month, while

Sherwood Forest will most likely go to Ellerslie

on the 12th for an open 1400-metre event and

then head to Hawkes’ Bay for the last two days

of their carnival.”

ASIA

14 for Manhattan RainManhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) brought

up his 14th individual stakes winner yesterday

when Excelling (6 g ex Princess Ruhie by

Fusaichi Pegasus) took out the Merlion Trophy

(Listed, 1200m) at Kranji. The Lee Freedman-

trained Excelling stepped out in stakes company

for the first time at his 18th start, having had

eight starts in NSW before transferring to

Singapore in early 2019. Sent out as a 25/1 shot

in the Singapore Group 2 yesterday, Excelling

came with a big run under Harry Kasim to

defeat Bold Thruster (Turffontein) by a half-

length with Surpass Natural (Elvstroem) a

further head away in third. Manhattan Rain will

stand at Blue Gum Farm for $13,200 (inc GST)

this season.

INTERNATIONAL

Two for EpauletteDarley’s Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

winner Epaulette (Commands) registered his

second Group or Grade 1 winner on Saturday,

his first in the northern hemisphere, when

Red Lark (3 f ex Firecrest by Darshaan) caused

a shock in taking the Del Mar Oaks (Gr 1, 9f).

Racing in the Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners

silks that were also carried by 2017 VRC Oaks

(Gr 1, 2500m) winner Pinot (Pierro), the

Paddy Gallagher-trained Red Lark settled

midfield under rider Drayden Van Dyke. Using

momentum to her advantage, she was able to

sweep up and hold her rivals at bay, scoring by

a length over California Kook (Boisterous) with

Warren’s Showtime (Clubhouse Ride) in third.

Red Lark is from Epaulette’s third crop produced

out of Kildangan Stud, with the Australian

stallion serving five books of mares in Ireland.

He will stand at Darley’s Kelvinside farm in the

Hunter Valley at $22,000 (inc GST) this season.

15 for Wootton BassettAudarya (4 f ex Green Bananas by Green Tune)

defied her huge odds to run out an impressive

winner of the Prix Jean Romanet (Gr 1, 2000m)

at Deauville yesterday, providing sire Wootton

Bassett (Iffraaj) with a 15th individual stakes

winner, and his second individual Group

1 winner, to accompany former European

champion three-year-old Almanzor. The

victory will no doubt have brought smiles

to Coolmore’s bosses, with Wootton Bassett

a recent addition to their powerful stallion

ranks, having been purchased from Haras

d’Etreham. Audarya, trained in Britain by

James Fanshawe, was always prominent under

Ioritz Mendizabal and ran on strongly to defeat

Ambition (Dubawi) by a neck under just hands

and heels, with a further four lengths back to

Romanciere (Dansili) in third. The winner was a

€125,000 purchase at the 2017 Arqana Yearling

sales, whilst her sire stood for €40,000 (approx

AUD$66,000) in 2020.

325 for GalileoKnocking on the door in Group company since

breaking her maiden last year, including third

in the Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f), Passion (Galileo)

gained deserved success in the Stanerra Stakes

(Gr 3, 1m6f) at Naas yesterday and became

the 325th individual stakes winner for Galileo

(Sadler’s Wells). The Aidan O’Brien-trained

three-year-old made all and stayed on well to

see off Traisha (Invincible Spirit) by a length

and three quarters, while there was a further

length and a quarter back to dual stakes winner

and favourite Kastasa (Rock Of Gibraltar) in

third. Passion is a full-sister to Irish Derby (Gr

1, 1m4f) and St Leger (Gr 1, 1m6.5f) winner

Capri and Group winner Cypress Creek, out of

the winning Anabaa mare Dialafara. Champion

Galileo has stood at Coolmore’s HQ in Fethard,

Ireland since 2002 and his fee has been listed as

private since 2009.

Five for Olympic GloryEtonian (2 c ex Naan by Indian Charlie) made

it two from two with a stylish success in the

Solario Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Sandown yesterday

and became the fifth individual stakes winner

for Olympic Glory (Choisir). The colt was noted

travelling best 400m out but did need to be

shaken up in the final stages to pull clear of

the staying-on and equally promising King

Vega (Lope De Vega). The winning margin was

a length and a quarter, and Etonian was sent

off 15-8 favourite. Third home, a further half-

length back, was the ultra-game 28-1 outsider

Apollo One (Equiano). Winning trainer Richard

Hannon, speaking to ITV Racing, said: “I was

very impressed. It’s lovely to have a good one

for Julie [Wood, owner], she lives for things

like this and hell’s horses wouldn’t have

kept her away today. He’s a Guineas horse,

definitely.” Olympic Glory (Choisir) stood the

2020 covering season at Haras de Bouquetot

in Normandy, France, for €10,000 (approx

AUD$16,000).

Nine for ExcelebrationBounce The Blues (Excelebration) stepped up

from her course and distance maiden victory

on August 3, where she beat Classic-placed

So Wonderful (War Front), to take out the

Owenstown Stud Stakes (Listed, 7f ) at Naas

yesterday on her fourth start. Having her

first run in stakes company, the John Feane-

trained three-year-old was a shock winner at

20-1 and became the ninth individual stakes

winner for her sire Excelebration (Exceed

And Excel). Held up by Kevin Manning, she

mounted her challenge two furlongs from

home, charging down the outside and seeing

off the fast-finishing Soul Search (Zoffany) to

win by half a length, with Baraniya (Iffraaj)

a further length and a quarter back in third.

Former Coolmore shuttler Excelebration, who

was bred by race sponsor Owenstown Stud,

stood in Ireland until last year when he was

sold to stand abroad.

Campanelle leads home Kodiac quinella in FranceQueen Mary Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) winner

Campanelle (Kodiac) made light work of the

step up in distance and the soft ground when

running out a dominant winner of what looked

a quality field in the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m)

at Deauville on Sunday. The winner broke well

and made virtually all under Frankie Dettori,

whose decision to stay in France for a few weeks

and miss the valuable meeting at York looks

fully vindicated now, finishing off strongly to

deny fellow Royal Ascot winner Nando Parrado

(Kodiac) with the once-raced Rhythm Master

(Dark Angel) defying inexperience to run an

excellent third. Trained in the USA by Wesley

Ward, who loves to raid the top European two-

year-old races, Campanelle was a 190,000gns

purchase from Book 1 of the Tattersalls October

Yearling Sales in 2019, from the draft of Tally-

Ho Stud, who also stand Kodiac (Danehill) for

€65,000 (approx. AUD$108,000).

22 for War Front War Front (Danzig) made it 22 Group or

Grade 1 winners on Saturday when Halladay

(4 c ex Hightap by Tapit) broke through for

his first graded stakes win in the Fourstardave

Handicap (Gr 1, 8f) at Saratoga. Halladay

took on a strong field that included defending

champion Got Stormy (Get Stormy), Breeders’

Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) winner Uni (More Than

Ready), 2018 St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m)

victor Without Parole (Frankel) and two-time

Grade 1 winner Raging Bull (Dark Angel), with

the Todd Pletcher-trained colt sent off as third

favourite despite his lack of a graded stakes

victory. Ridden by Luis Saez, Halladay defeated

Got Stormy by a length and a quarter, with

the same margin back to Casa Creed (Jimmy

Creed) in third. War Front stood for US$250,000

at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky in 2020.

61 for Uncle MoThe ever-reliable Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie)

brought up his 61st stakes winner on Saturday

with Harvest Moon (3 f ex Qaraaba by

Shamardal) taking out the Torrey Pines Stakes

(Gr 3, 8f ) at Del Mar. The Simon Callaghan-

trained filly, racing in the Michael Tabor

orange and blue, took her record to three wins

from four starts with her victory; she won by a

length and a quarter over Secret Keeper (Into

Mischief ), with a further five and a quarter

lengths back to Paige Anne (Take Charge Indy)

in third. "We were delighted. This filly means a

lot because I trained the mother, which gives it

a little extra sentiment," Callaghan said. "She's

an exciting, big filly that we've been super

patient with, and it's great that she's coming

into doing what she's doing." Uncle Mo stood

for US$125,000 at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in

Kentucky this year.

Maximum Security adds Pacific ClassicWidely known for his Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f)

demotion last year, Maximum Security (New

Year’s Day) is carving out a strong record aside

from that controversial decision demoting him

to last in that race, as well as an investigation

into his Saudi Cup (9f) victory earlier this year.

The four-year-old remains unbeaten in 2020,

adding the Pacific Classic (Gr 1, 10f) at Del

Mar to his resume yesterday. The Bob Baffert-

trained Maximum Security never looked in too

much doubt, making most to score by three

lengths over Sharp Samurai (First Samurai)

with Midcourt (Midnight Lute) almost six

lengths from the winner. "He’s a top horse.

People need to know he is the real deal,” Baffert

said. “It’s a shame what he’s gone through. It’s

not his fault, but he is a great horse.” The win

earns Maximum Security an automatic paid

berth into November’s Breeders’ Cup Classic

(Gr 1, 10f) at Keeneland.

Scandinavian stakes treble for Kick OnBritish-bred Kick On (Charm Spirit) made it

a hat-trick of stakes races since joining Niels

Petersen in Norway when taking out yesterday’s

Marit Sveaas Minnelop (Gr 3, 1800m) at

Overvoll, the fifth stakes success of his career.

The four-year-old also won the Sovereign

Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) last year for John Gosden

and took out the Stockholms Stora Pris (Gr 3,

1750m) at Bro Park in June and Swedish Open

Mile (Listed, 1600m) last month since switching

to Petersen. He got the better of six-year-old

Swedish Dream (Helmet), while his stablemate

and former Scandinavian Champion Square

De Luynes (Manduro) was third. Charm Spirit

(Invincible Spirit) stands at Windsor Park Stud

where his fee this season is NZ$15,000.

Areion at the trebleBreaking out of the stalls before the start of the

race did not do Sun At Work (Areion) any harm,

for having been reloaded without getting very

far, the game eight-year-old was quickly away

too when the race started properly, and duly

made every yard in yesterday’s Grosser Wettstar

Sommer Preis (Listed, 1600m) at Hannover

under Renato Souza, who punched the air as

the duo crossed the line. He was three-quarters

of a length to the good of Ninario (Areion), with

the winning sire also responsible for the third

home Wonnemond (Areion), who was another

length and a quarter back. Stewards held an

inquiry into a very messy final furlong but Sun

At Work was not involved having kept out of

trouble on the front end. Areion (Big Shuffle)

stands at Gestut Etzean where his 2020 fee was

€12,500 (approx. AUD$20,500).

Dubawi’s daughter springs surprise

Maamora (Dubawi) pulled off an upset in the

Atalanta Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Sandown yesterday,

repelling her nine rivals in tremendously game

fashion up the hill to score at 14-1 under William

Buick. The winning margin over 2018 Classic

heroine Billesdon Brook (Champs Elysees) was

half a length. Third home Lavender’s Blue (Sea

The Stars) was extremely unlucky having been

stopped in her run. Had she got clear she may

well have repeated her success in the same race

in 2019. Maamora was bred by Godolphin, who

stand Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) at Dalham

Hall Stud in Newmarket. His fee this year was

£250,000 (approx AUD$450,000).

Wind blows rivals awayCall The Wind (Frankel) ran out a facile

winner of the Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2, 3000m) at

Deauville under a cool Olivier Peslier ride,

defeating Ashrun (Authorized) and Windstoss

(Shirocco) with the minimum of fuss. The race

has become something of an unofficial trial

for the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), with

previous Cup heroes Dunaden (2011) and

Americain (2010) having used the race as their

final European preparation before heading

to Australia. However, the key runners with

their sights set on Flemington in November

all suffered disappointing days; Red Verdon

(Lemon Drop Kid) was withdrawn at the start,

the Australian Bloodstock-owned Collide

(Frankel) made much of the running but

faded late on to finish unplaced, whilst the

OTI-owned San Huberto (Speightstown) was

ultimately disappointing, never really looking

dangerous. Call The Wind is a half-brother to

Group 1 winners We Are and With You, both by

Dansili, and his dam, In Clover (Inchinor) has

also produced Listed winners Incahoots and

Dream Clover, both by Oasis Dream. Frankel

(Galileo) stands at Juddmonte’s Banstead

Manor Stud in Great Britain for £175,000

(approx AUD$320,000).

Ebaiyra too good in PomoneEbaiyra (Distorted Humor) looked a stayer of

some promise when taking the Prix de Pomone

(Gr 2, 2500m) under a classy front-running

Christophe Soumillon ride at Deauville

yesterday. The filly showed plenty of tenacity

to hold off the challenge of British raider Spirit

Of Appin (Champs Elysees) and Grand Glory

(Olympic Glory) by three quarters of a length

with a further length back to the third. Ebaiyra

broke her maiden in a Group 3 before finishing

sixth in the Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m); the

form of that race looks exceptionally strong,

with the winner, Fancy Blue (Deep Impact),

subsequently winning the Nassau Stakes (Gr 1,

1m2f). She is a half-sister to Listed winner Edisa

(Kitten’s Joy) and there’s plenty of stamina in

the pedigree as she’s a granddaughter of a half-

sister to Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f) winners Enzeli

and Estimate. Distorted Humor (Forty Niner)

stands at WinStar Farm in Kentucky for a fee of

US$50,000 (approx AUD$70,000).

The inaugural Tattersalls August

Sale will take place at Park

Paddocks in Newmarket from

Monday to Wednesday, with the

three-day auction having attracted 774 initial

entries plus an additional wildcard.

With last year's Gimcrack (Gr 2, 6f ) and

Champagne Stakes (Gr 2, 7f ) scorer Threat

(Footstepsinthesand) among 167 withdrawn

lots, top billing might instead fall to the regally-

bred Listed scorer Fort Myers (War Front),

Lot 387, one of five lots from Aidan O'Brien's

Ballydoyle Stables.

The three-year-old War Front (Danzig) colt

clocked up plenty of mileage in eight starts as

a juvenile, when he landed the Star Appeal

Stakes (Listed, 7f ) under lights at Dundalk.

Fort Myers was also third in the Railway

Stakes (Gr 2, 6f ) and a highly respectable

seventh in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr

1, 1m) at Santa Anita, when beaten less than

three lengths.

This year he has contested the Irish 2,000

Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and Prix du Jockey Club

(Gr 1, 2100m) and finished third in the Meld

Stakes (Gr 3, 1m1f ) at Leopardstown on his

most recent start.

The Coolmore homebred is out of the Irish

1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) heroine Marvellous

(Galileo), one of five Group 1 performers out

of You'resothrilling (Storm Cat), along with

Gleneagles and Vatican City, also both by

Galileo (Sadler’s Wells).

The Cherry Hinton Stakes (Gr 2, 6f )

scorer You'resothrilling is herself a Storm Cat

(Storm Bird) sister to the ‘Iron Horse’ Giant's

Causeway.

Another standout lot is fellow stakes scorer

Surf Dancer (Lope De Vega) (Lot 706), one

of six lots from William Haggas' Somerville

Lodge.

Surf Dancer was bought by his owners

China Horse Club and Ballylinch Stud for

€260,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale, and won a

valuable juvenile race at Chelmsford at two

and the King Charles II Stakes (Listed, 7f ) at

York this July.

The three-year-old Lope De Vega

(Shamardal) colt has an attractive pedigree

as a son of the Listed-winning Beach Belle

(Invincible Spirit), whose own dam is

the Group 1-placed Beach Bunny (High

Chaparral).

Consignments from Juddmonte Farms

always rank among the highlights at this type

of sale, Prince Khalid Abdullah's operation

having sold the top-priced colt Jewel House

(Dubawi) for 215,000gns at the 2017 July Sale.

Among the Juddmonte jewels on offer this

week are the Group-placed Dawn Approach

colt Georgeville (Lot 436) and the smartly bred

fillies Narrate (Dansili) (Lot 442) and Sophistry

(Make Believe) (Lot 445).

There are clues in the pedigree of dual

winner Georgeville to suggest he may have

more wins left in him, as he is out of the dual

Group 3 winner Big Break, a Dansili full-sister

to Royal Whip Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2f ) scorer

Famous Name.

The latter was known as the ATM machine

in Dermot Weld's yard for winning 21 races

- all stakes races bar his maiden win - and

placing in a further 13 races in 38 starts.

Of the three-year-old fillies, Narrate is a

Dansili full-sister to stakes scorers Runnymede

and Stipulate and descends from Prix du

Moulin (Gr 1, 1600m) heroine All At Sea

(Riverman), while Sophistry is a Make Believe

(Makfi) half-sister to Group 1-winning juvenile

Epicuris (Rail Link) and from the family of

French Guineas heroine Matiara (Bering).

The largest draft comes from The

Castlebridge Consignment with 73 lots headed

up by recent Listed winner Maystar (Mayson),

Lot 360, a three-year-old gelding with a peak

Racing Post Rating of 102.

The same vendor also offers the three-time

winner and 94-rated To Nathaniel (Nathaniel),

Lot 682, a three-year-old colt out of the

winning Sea The Stars mare Too The Stars,

meaning he is inbred 3x3 to Urban Sea.

The latest addition to the auction is the

Archie Watson-trained Ocean Star (Lot 199A), a

two-year-old Adaay (Kodiac) filly who broke her

maiden by a resounding 11 lengths on her latest

start after being stepped up to seven furlongs,

and she too features among the Castlebridge

draft.

Ocean Star was bred by John Banahan

out of the New Approach mare Miss Wicklow

and hails from the same family as Northern

Dancer Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) winner Forte Dei

Marmi (Selkirk) and the Epsom and Irish Oaks

placegetter Harlequeen (Canford Cliffs).

Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said:

"The Covid-related circumstances surrounding

the decision to introduce a Tattersalls August

Sale are well documented and we've been

hugely encouraged by both the quality and

quantity of entries.

"Originally pencilled in for two days, we've

extended the sale to three days to accommodate

the number of entries, and the catalogue has

the strength and depth that will appeal to a

wide cross section of buyers, both domestic and

further afield.

"Despite the current challenges, our

recent July Sale achieved a phenomenal 96

per cent clearance rate, which demonstrates

the enduring appeal of sales of this nature

at Tattersalls, and we've already received

extremely positive feedback from our myriad

overseas markets."

BY MICHAEL LEE | SGP TURF CLUB

Progressive sprinter Excelling

(Manhattan Rain) was the main

beneficiary from an earnest speed

battle in and around him when

he emerged the freshest horse on the scene

en route to a well-calculated victory in the

S$250,000 Merlion Trophy (Gr 2, 1200m)

yesterday.

Trained by Lee Freedman, the six-year-old

had steadily been scaling through his grades

with four wins up to Class 2 level at Kranji,

mostly scored in his favourite leading tactics.

But, somehow, most thought a stab at the

elite class under weight-for-age conditions

might be one bridge too far at this stage.

Hence the generous $130 odds, but most

probably lengthened up further by the presence

of Bold Thruster (Turffontein), the hot favourite

of the annual Polytrack feature.

Freedman was about the only one who

believed, and when jockey A’Isisuhairi Kasim,

Freedman’s new blue-eyed boy, took a drop

instead of capitalising on his barrier number

one to vie for the lead, that turned out to be the

manoeuvre that would upend all his rivals at

the business end, including Bold Thruster.

As Excelling settled into his ground-saving

bubble onto the fence, almost two-thirds of the

field were jostling and punching out for position

at a cracking pace, with Zac Kasa (Reset) just a

peg off the helter skelter.

Stablemate Augustano (Hard Spun) took

up the leading role in the back straight but was

immediately besieged by three speed chasers

spread abreast, Surpass Natural (Elvstroem),

My Dreamliner (Dream Ahead) and – to his

backers’ and connections’ horror – Bold

Thruster facing the breeze the widest.

The order and frenetic pace varied little to

the home turn where Louis Beuzelin decided it

was time to leave that nightmarish trip behind

on the favourite.

The French jockey pushed the throttle to

the max, but Bold Thruster, probably softened

up by that wide trip burning precious petrol,

could not quite draw clear. Surpass Natural was

still in the mix but after the last-start winner

rolled out, a gap appeared that Excelling dived

through in no time.

Having economised all his horsepower

during that soft run in transit, Freedman’s

protégé was full of running when set alight by

A’Isisuhairi.

In two to three bounds, he shot one length

clear, but Surpass Natural and Bold Thruster did

not throw in the towel so easily as they whacked

away and did nibble at the lead a little, but they

were in the end both beaten fair and square by

an excellent sprinter.

Bold Thruster lunged to claim the first

prize for minor placings half-a-length away,

beating Surpass Natural by a head, leaving

to the imagination what could have been the

final result if he had swapped barriers with the

winner.

Luck is often a part of such equations in

horse racing, even off the tracks before horses

set hoof in a race, as Freedman recalled after

Excelling gave him his sixth Group success at

Kranji.

“I would like to pay tribute to Constance

Cheng. I bought that horse for her but she

decided not to take him, and that’s when I

found other owners for him,” said Freedman.

The Australian Hall of Fame trainer was

certainly in a thankful mood as he continued

heaping praise to the high heavens.

“I’d also like to thank Shane Baertschiger.

He’s the one who told me I’d be mad not to run

Excelling in the Merlion Trophy, thanks Shane!”

he added in a nod to last Sunday’s Kranji Mile-

winning trainer (Aramaayo).

On the way the race unfolded, the master

tactician revealed it was always the intention

to ride the former two-time Australian winner

(Gosford and Kembla Grange, both over 1200m,

when prepared by Joseph Pride) colder in spite

of being drawn in stall one.

“He had the winkers on to focus him up, but

I didn’t know if they would work,” he said.

“We actually raced him held up for a run

before and he nearly won last year (fast-finishing

third to Fame Star in a Class 3 sprint race).”

A’Isisuhairi, who was capturing his second

Group feature after he won the Stewards’

Cup (Gr 2, 1600m) aboard Siam Blue Vanda

(Echoes Of Heaven) earlier in the year, said his

confidence kept growing during the race.

“Mr Freedman actually didn’t like barrier

No 1. He told me he’d leave it to me, but he

would prefer I jump and get cover,” said the

Malaysian hoop.

“I didn’t want to go forward as I know

Augustano would roll forward. When I saw the

speed battle in front, with Bold Thruster caught

four wide, I was happy my own horse was

travelling relaxed.

“Bold Thruster is such a good horse that he

can kick again, though, but all I needed for my

horse was to see daylight at the right time. The

way he was travelling, if I could get the run, I

believe he could kick home.

“I knew he was super fit as Mr Freedman

knows how to get his horses ready. He told me

he was quite happy with his condition before

the race.

“As soon as I found the gap, he quickened

through nicely, but I was a bit worried when I

saw Bold Thruster on the outside.

“I asked myself, ‘will I get this race?’, but

luckily, my horse kept going. I had just won my

second Group two race for the year.

“My aim has always been to win at least

one Group race (a statistic he has proudly

maintained since his first full year as an

apprentice jockey in 2013 – Trudeau in the

Group 2 EW Barker Trophy) per season, and I

won two now.

“In terms of wins, I set a target of 15 wins

and I’ve hit it today. It’s all about opportunities,

I’ve been riding some nice horses lately.

“If I keep getting the same support, my next

target is to win the local champion jockey title.”

That award was introduced last year with

Benny Woodworth the first recipient on 69

winners, with A’Isisuhairi some gap away in

fourth place on 18 winners.

Woodworth still leads this year on 16

winners, but while it’s too soon to speculate,

with A’Isisuhairi snapping at his heels one

winner behind, the momentum might have

swung a little in favour of the Kelantan-born

jockey this year.

With that fifth win in ten starts, Excelling

has seen his stakes earnings shoot past the

S$300,000 mark for his lucky connections.
