Seeing Jesus in all of ScriptureTRANSCRIPT
Getting to Jesus in the Old Testament
Everything in the OT points to (John 5:39-40) or prophesies about (Acts 10:43) Christ and his cross. He is the fulfillment of all the promises (2 Cor. 1:20) and the finale of all biblical prototypes (Romans 5:14). To interpret the Bible apart from Him is to misunderstand its intended meaning (2 Cor. 3:12-15). When reading the OT the following questions can help us understand gospel implications in the text:
Pointers: (lambs sacrifice, temple)
• Is there a worse enemy? • How has God saved more fully? • Where does God’s fullest image dwell? • Any injustice being committed? • Who do the laws point you to? • Who are the true people of God? • What are sacrifices revealing?
Prophecies: (captivities, Jeremiah)
• Is there greater wrath to come? • Is there a greater blessing to come? • Is there a more perfect land? • Does God speak more clearly elsewhere? • Who are the prophets speaking about? • Who is God’s clearest mouthpiece?
Promises: (covenants, Abraham, Messianic)
• How are the covenants/promises in this text explained, furthered?
• Is there a better promise coming? • Who seals/applies promises/covenants to us? • How are we assured of his faithfulness to his
promises?
Prototypes: (Moses, Job, Adam)
• Is there a more righteous person? • Is there one closer to God? • Has anyone suffered more? • Who saves God’s people more fully? • Who intercedes for God’s people more
permanently? • A more ultimate king over God’s people?
