more reasons why L&T is a Leader in susTainabiLiTy performance in india3Leaders in sustainability
in the capital goods sector
L&T has emerged the leader in sustainability in
the capital goods sector in India on the Dow
Jones Sustainability Emerging Market Indices
(DJSI-EMI) 2015.
A 35% improvement in its score over the
previous year reflects the success of several
wide-ranging sustainability initiatives. Only
9 Indian companies feature in the indices
with L&T being the only Indian company
from amongst 14 in the capital goods sector
from emerging markets which includes the
BRICS countries. DJSI has been tracking the
performance of the world’s leading companies
in terms of economic, environmental and
social criteria since 1999. This is the third
consecutive year that L&T has made it to
the top few in the DJSI-EMI, undoubtedly a
recognition of L&T’s continued commitment
to its sustainability programmes.
Among Asia’s Top 5
‘Most Sustainable Companies’
L&T has, once again been featured among
Asia’s Top 5 ‘Most Sustainable Companies’ in
the Industrials Sector in Channel NewsAsia’s
Sustainability Rankings 2015.
In the Top 100 Most Sustainable Companies’
list, L&T stood at 81 with only 18 Indian
companies making it to the Top 100 list. The
Channel NewsAsia Sustainability Rankings
identify the Top 100 companies in the region
with the highest sustainability performance,
based on a broad range of environmental,
social and governance (ESG) indicators. The
analysis takes into account the performance
of a company in terms of its contribution
to social development, good governance and
environmental protection.
Among Top 5 in the
Economic Times CSR Survey
India’s leading financial publication - The
Economic Times has ranked L&T at # 4 in its
survey of ‘Best Companies for CSR in India’
which is a marked improvement from its 7th
rank in the previous year’s survey.
Conducted by Futurescape and IIM-Udaipur
on behalf of The Economic Times, the survey
this year featured 216 companies whose
CSR efforts were weighed against four key
criteria of sustainability, stakeholder value,
governance and disclosures. Listing L&T’s
efforts, the survey makes a special mention of
L&T’s focus on water, sanitation, education,
healthcare and skill building.
Companies featured in the survey represented
sectors as varied as automobiles, banks,
diversified FMCG, infrastructure, information
technology, metals and mining, oil, power,
steel, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications
and others.
As a company that touches and transforms
the lives of millions every year, we have
always endeavored to embed sustainability
into the core of our business operations to create
shared value not only for our business but for the
society as well. Whether it is helping the future of
the country to have better facilities at schools to
learn or aiding the sick through the Prayas Trust
or; whether it is finding a new compound to cure
concrete that obviates the use of precious water
or lending a helping hand to victims of natural
disasters, we have always kept the tripod of Planet,
People and Profit central to way we do business. As
our Group Executive Chairman says, sustainability
is a story that has to be co-authored by the
company along with the society and we have been
doing more than our bit to ensure that the story
is told. It is therefore heartening to note that our
efforts are being recognized by the outside world
and that is fuel enough to give greater impetus

Cement is vital for construction and any value addition to it can yield wide-ranging benefits
in terms of greater strength, lesser environmental impact and higher savings. Our sharp
engineers at the Kochi Metro project added two additives - Silica Fume Alccoffine and Slag
– to concrete and reaped some rich dividends!
Silica Fume Alccoffine is a byproduct from the production of silicon metal or ferrosilicon
alloys. Its chemical and physical properties make it more reactive and when mixed with
concrete, it renders the concrete stronger and more durable. Slag, on the other hand, is a
hydraulic binder. While slag cement reacts with water like conventional Portland pozzolana,
slag consumes a by-product from the hydration of Portland cement to form additional
calcium-silicate hydrate or CSH which makes the cement denser, improves quality, and
increases its resistance to moisture and aggressive chemicals. What’s more, there was an
environmental bonus to boot - conservation of material and a lower carbon footprint.
PT&D IC is engaged in
raising a slew of long-
distance transmission line
projects across the county
among which the Varanasi-
Kanpur power link is a
composite high voltage
line running through the
heart of Uttar Pradesh.
Originally, the alignment
was to pass through a vast
green belt but the line was
saving Trees and reaching ouT across a 281 km power corridor
re-routed to conserve trees
despite several challenges
in execution. This gained
the goodwill of the locals
as they appreciated L&T’s
sustainability efforts.
The project team went a
step further and added
a human touch to their
green initiative by providing
educational support to
village schools located in the
remote areas. At one of the
junctions, as the core team
takes up a tower erection
work, the head master of
the nearby primary school

to many such small acts of
kindness of L&T that have
benefitted the locals and
students.

• One unit of donated whole blood is separated into components before
use (red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, platelets, etc.)
• There are four main blood types: A, B, AB and O.
• There are about one billion red blood cells in a few drops of whole blood.
• Red blood cells live for about 120 days in our bodies.
• Red blood cells can be stored under normal conditions for up to 42 days.
• Frozen red blood cells can be stored for ten years or more.
• Platelets must be used within five days.
• Platelets are small blood cells that assist in the process of blood clotting
helping those with leukemia and other cancers to control bleeding.
• Plasma, the fourth major component of blood, is a sticky, pale yellow fluid
mixture of water, protein and salts. It is 95% water. The other 5% is made
up of nutrients, proteins and hormones.
• Blood plasma constitutes 55% of the volume of human blood.
• Plasma helps maintain blood pressure, carries blood cells, nutrients,
enzymes and hormones, and supplies critical proteins for blood clotting
and immunity.
• Type AB plasma has been considered as the universal blood plasma type,
and therefore AB plasma is given to patients with any blood type.
• Frozen plasma can be stored for up to one year.
• Human blood; red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets are
made naturally by the body in the bone marrow.
With a work culture that embraces ethics, value systems, a comfortable and safe environment and learning opportunities, L&T encourages its people to come forward and generously help the needy by sharing the gift of life for there is no substitute to human Blood. L&T has executed a vital water
infrastructure facility for Delhi Jal
Board (DJB) by revamping a 32 year
old 110 MGD water treatment
plant at Bhagirathi which provides
drinking water to close to 42 lakh
people of East Delhi. A range of
automations have been enabled
by team L&T that makes the
plant one of the most advanced
water management systems in
the Country. One of the gains
from the new system is a 6 MGD
reactor thickener recycle plant
that recycles water back into
the bifurcation chamber from
the sludge generated from the
clarifiers while dried out sludge is
carefully disposed off as per DJB
guidelines.
