Message of thanksI would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the2010 issue of Donor News. I am once again delighted by thegenerosity of our alumni, staff and friends in supporting ourcurrent students. We have now reached a landmark £1 milliondonated to the Annual Fund specifically for student supportincluding scholarships.

All British universities are facing tough times ahead and thesituation is no different for Sheffield. During these challenges, the support of our alumni, staff and friends is of greatsignificance. We continue to pride ourselves on the reputationof the University of Sheffield and this is a feeling that I knowremains strong amongst our community.

I have been fortunate to meet many of you over the past yearat events all over the world and have been encouraged byyour clear affection and support for the University. The SilverArrows lapel badge is given to supporters who have taken outa regular gift by standing order, made a one-off donation of£1,000 or more, or are planning to leave a legacy in their Will. I have noticed with great pleasure the number of peoplewearing this badge at alumni events and by staff around theUniversity campus. I wear my badge with pride, knowing that I am in the company of all of those others who are supportingthe University’s scholarship programme. By wearing thisbadge all of us can raise the profile of what alumni givingmeans – and encourage others to think about donating.

Supporting yourUniversityMiles Stevenson, Director of Development, reflects on thepositive effects donations have on every aspect of life atthe University of Sheffield.

AlumniFund isone in amillion! We’re delighted to report that theAlumni Fund has now raised over £1 million in donations from manyindividuals since it started in 2003. A huge thank you to everyone whodonates to the Alumni Fund each year, providing crucial direct support to ourstudents through scholarships, facilities, equipment and AlumniFoundation grants.

You have also helped our Alumni Fundto an impressive ranking in the annualRoss-CASE Survey (the leadingnational benchmarking survey for allUK universities’ development andalumni relations activities). We arecurrently in the top 18 Alumni Funds inthe UK (out of a total of 66 universitieswho have been fundraising for at leastfour years). This is a terrificachievement – we are raising fundscomparable to other Russell Groupuniversities whose alumni andfundraising programmes have beenestablished far longer than ours.Thank you so much for showing thatSheffield graduates really are some ofthe most generous in the UK.

This year our fundraising efforts were helped by theDevelopment Office’s move to larger premises, whichinclude a fantastic call room for our team of dedicated, enthusiastic student callers. They are looking forwardto talking to you again soon!

I am constantly amazed by what can be achievedthrough the generosity of our supporters. Thedonations for the new Sheffield Institute forTranslational Neuroscience (SITraN) (see page 6)make up one of the biggest pledges the Universityhas received in modern times. It reminds me of the1904 foundation campaign when the pennydonations from the people of Sheffield united withmajor benefactions to create a university for thecity. This spirit of generosity has been repeatednow, over 100 years later, through the SheffieldInstitute Foundation for Motor Neurone Disease.

At the SITraN building commencement ceremony, I met many of their supporters and I wasparticularly impressed by the efforts of one youngboy who has raised several thousand pounds forthe project via sponsored challenges. Everyone canplay a part in fundraising for a project they believein, and it is the support of so many people thatmakes a dramatic difference.

We have just celebrated 8,000 individualdonations since the Development and AlumniRelations Office opened in 2002, and thisgenerosity is in evidence across the campusthrough the financial support we can now offer

departments, staff and students. I have recently been sent 52 applications fordepartmental projects and many of these will receive funding from donations of the last12 months.

At a presentation I made to the Council of the University on legacy donations I was able toreport that, over the last ten years, we have received £3.4 million in generous legacies. Many of these have been for a much loved department or to support medical research atthe University – which benefits all of us. As was reported in last year’s Donor News, alumnus and former member of staff the late John Hawley (BEng 1973) made provision fora gift for student sport at the University through the Alumni Foundation. Our office isworking closely with U Sport, the department that manages all aspects of sport, healthand fitness at the University, on the development of a new sports pitch which should becompleted in 2011 thanks to this generous donation from his wife Pauline.

Over 400 people have now confirmed that they are remembering the University in theirWill. This generosity speaks volumes for people’s affection for our University. All of thesupport that we receive is voluntary and – as you will see from thepages of this magazine – it is funding a huge range of activitiesacross the University. Philanthropy is a great force for good and I thank all of our supporters for their donations.

Pop icon achieves donation milestone

The front man of the legendary Sheffield-based band ABC has helpedour annual reunion fundraising campaign reach new heights.

Martin Fry (BA 1979) and his wife Julie made a very generous donation, which helped theirclass reunion campaign to achieve a record total of over £60,000. Theirs was also the7,000th individual donation received by the University since 2002, donations which totalover £20 million in gifts and confirmed pledges.

Martin was the guest speaker at our Annual Alumni Reunion, which was attended by over100 graduates from 1969, 1979 and 1984. A highlight of the event was dancing the nightaway in the Students’ Union bar (which of course included plenty of ABC hits on theplaylist!). Our special thanks go to Martin, Julie and all members of the anniversary classeswho made donations to the campaign. These gifts will be directed to projects includingour Alumni Fund Scholarship programme, which provides scholarships of £3,000 each forgifted students who are in need of financial help.

“We see the positive effect of these gifts everywhere, from additional IT provision tofunding for world-leading research – and most importantly the transforming effect theyhave on individual lives,” said Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett. “I’d like to say avery heartfelt thank you to all our supporters, and hope that you are very proud of all thesuccess you are helping to achieve for Sheffield.”

A new state-of-the-art £12 million research institute, SITraN (theSheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience), is being built on asite on Dorset Street, near the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Theproject has been generously funded by a £9 million donation from theSheffield Institute Foundation for Motor Neurone Disease (SIFMND),which was formed by a concerned group of patrons who wanted tosupport the development of the institute.

SITraN brings together scientists and medical specialists who are dedicated to findingthe causes and cure for motor neurone disease (MND), as well as other degenerativeconditions such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer’s disease and spinal muscularatrophy. Over 5,000 people in the UK suffer from MND. It is an incurable disease whichdestroys the cells that control movement causing progressive disability. Sufferers maylose their ability to walk, talk, eat and breathe. At present, treatment options for theprotection of motor neurones have only a modest effect and more effective therapiesare urgently needed.

International expert in MND and head of the new institute Professor Pamela Shaw said,“The patrons of SIFMND are inspirational and their support and generosity havespurred me on to build a dedicated research institute which will bring together thebest clinicians and scientists under one roof. This is a wonderful and exciting stepforward for patients with MND and other disorders of the motor system, and I and theteams I work with are delighted to be part of it.”

Irene Beard, a patron of SIFMND, added, “There was a need for more scientificresearch to be done to find the causes and develop treatments for MND and webelieve that this new institute will achieve this and bring huge benefits to patientsacross the world. It is fantastic to be part of this project and help raise much neededfunds for such a great cause.”

Miles Stevenson, Director of Development, commented, “This is the largestphilanthropic gift to the University from private benefaction since the Edwardianperiod. We are most grateful to all the donors to SIFMND, both large and small, whohave made this possible.”

Thank you“We have been very fortunate to have a groupof patrons and supporters dedicated toraising funds,” said Stephen Sly (LLB 1984),Chair of the Trustees of SIFMND. “Theirenthusiasm and passion to help ProfessorShaw have been outstanding. Among our‘champions’ have been Jonathan Stone, whosefather Hyman Stone was President ofSheffield’s Students’ Union in 1923; StuartKeane, whose son Shaun suffered from MNDand recently passed away; Irene Beard whoseenergy and powers of persuasion have beeninvaluable; and our Honorary Patron theDuke of Devonshire.

“One of the most adventurous fundraisingchallenges this year is the Bounty BoatExpedition in which four crew members willfollow the voyage of William Bligh when castadrift from HMS Bounty. They will attempt totravel 4,000 miles across the Pacific in an openboat – with not enough food, no charts and notoilet paper! A host of other fundraising eventshave also been taking place including a Pedalthe Ports cycling event and a trek to the SouthPole. I would like to extend my thanks andgratitude to all those who have been involvedin fundraising for SITraN.

“We are continuing to raise money to fundfurther equipment and key staff posts. If youwish to donate to the Bounty Boat Expeditionvisit the website at www.bountyboat.com.”

The AlumniFoundationFunding student initiatives across the campus

Since 2002, the Alumni Foundation has awarded over 190 grants to the value of over£200,000 in support of a wide range of University projects. The Foundation managesfunds from donations made to the Alumni Fund by alumni and friends of the University.Students and staff are encouraged to submit applications for funding of up to £2,000for a specific project and the Foundation Committee meets three times a year toallocate the funds. The grants are made to projects that add life to the University andapplicants are encouraged to raise additional funds through their own fundraising.

Students’ Union President Paul Tobin acknowledges the positive effects of supportfrom the Alumni Foundation: “As President it is a great privilege to help allocatealumni gifts to student projects. On behalf of all the student clubs and societies whohave benefited I would like to say thank you to our donors. Attending AlumniFoundation meetings is one of the highlights of my year.”

Sheffield Dancesport SocietyWith Strictly Come Dancing a regular fixture in the television schedules, the medal-winning Sheffield Dancesport Society is very popular with students from both universitiesin the city. They represent the University at eight competitions a year around the countryand host the annual Sheffield Social dance competition in the Octagon Centre.

Helen Roots, the Society’s Treasurer, approached the Alumni Foundation for funds to buya set of new competition dresses and accessories. She said, “We were most grateful toreceive a £1,000 grant. Presentation is essential as not only do clothes, hair and make-upmake all the difference to being noticed by a judge, but they also give the dancerconfidence. It was with great excitement that we were able to buy new outfits in which wefeel proud to represent the University of Sheffield and Sheffield as a city. With the grantmoney we now have new outfits for the whole A team, and some extra for the B team too.We will hopefully dance our way to even more medals this year!”

SheffieldUniversityNightlineSheffield Nightline is an invaluablewelfare service, similar toSamaritans, available to the entirestudent population between thehours of 8.00pm and 8.00am. Thestudent volunteers, of which thereare between 60 and 90 a year, provide an information serviceand a listening service, via emailand telephone. Their purpose is tobe non-directive, non-judgmental,empathetic and confidential.

The Nightline Committee appliedto the Alumni Foundation for agrant for computing and workingfacilities: “Nightline is extremelygrateful to the Alumni Foundationfor their very generous grant of£1,400 this year. We havebenefited greatly from this moneyand it has helped us in many ways.We were able to buy a wonderfullaptop, printer and phones thatare used by everyone in theorganisation. Additionally, we havepurchased Bluetooth softwarethat enables us to advertiseNightline and its service tostudents at the UniversityFreshers Fair and otherpromotional events. We feel that, without this money, Nightline’scommittee would not have beenable to achieve many of their aimsfor the organisation this year.”

The Sheffield SabresThe Sheffield Sabres (the American football team) were named theUniversity’s Sports Club of the Year in 2009, following a winning seasonin which they topped their division table. A successful application for£840 to the Alumni Foundation resulted in the purchase of sixdesperately needed sets of kit (helmet and pads).

“The grant increased our ability to coach and train more players,” saidElliott Josypenko, Vice President. “It was our off-field commitments thatearned us the Sports Club of the Year award. Over the course of 2008-09 the Sabres raised over £2,300 for Sheffield and Leeds’ hospitals. Wealso coached a weekly training session at Newfield ComprehensiveSchool; and gave the Angleton Community Centre in the Manor acomplete DIY makeover. We realise that our successes this year wouldnot have been possible without the support of the Alumni Foundation. We would like to thank our donors for this opportunity to take the clubto the next level.”

Sheffield Universities’Guild of Change RingersA programme of events to celebrate their goldenanniversary reunited past and present members of theGuild in Sheffield. Founded in October 1958 by a groupof students as an affiliated society of the Students’Union, the Guild has always welcomed members fromall higher education institutions in the city, and theircurrent title was adopted in 1992.

The main focus of the anniversary celebrations was aweekend in February 2009, which was attended byover 100 alumni – many of whom hadn’t returned toSheffield in over 30 years. They took part in ringing atthe society’s home, at the Cathedral Church of St Mariein the city centre, and a striking competition. The Guildreceived a £410 grant from the Alumni Foundationwhich funded various aspects of the programme.

Dear Lee…“I cried when I found out that I had received the award. I hadonly applied to postgraduatestudy on the basis that I couldsecure funding. The scholarshipwas an amazing opportunity forme, as someone from a workingclass family background and thefirst generation to go touniversity. I am extremelygrateful, as it is the perfectspringboard to carry onlearning and achieving to thehighest possible standard!”Chantelle Turner, MA English Literature

“I would like to say a huge thankyou for my scholarship. Afterrecovering from Hodgkin’slymphoma while studying for aHistory degree at Sheffield(graduating in 2006) I wasdetermined to turn the worst thingthat had ever happened to me intothe best thing that has everhappened. There was only oneplace that I wanted to studymedicine and now, in part thanksto this gift, I am back in Sheffieldand thoroughly enjoying the firstyear of the MB ChB programme.”Tom Grew, MB ChB Medicine

Lee launched the Jack Reacher Scholarships at the Fat Cat pub in Kelham Island, Sheffield, which is owned by alumnus Dave Wickett (MA 1976)(seen here on the right). The convivial evening was helped along by sampling the new Jack Reacher Ale, specially brewed by Kelham Island Breweryin Lee’s honour. Lee and Dave were joined by (far left) Miles Stevenson, Director of Development, and Professor Dominic Shellard.

Graduates Lee Child (LLB 1977, Hon LittD 2009) – best selling crime writer and VisitingProfessor at the University of Sheffield – and his wife Jane (BA 1975) have helped 52 students to create their own success stories. Thanks to their extremely generousdonation, 25 undergraduate and 27 postgraduate Jack Reacher Scholarships have beenawarded, worth £2,000 each – named after Lee’s main character in his series of best-selling novels.

The scholarships were awarded to talented students from each of the University’s fivefaculties to provide them with financial assistance during their studies. Many of thescholars were the first person in their family to attend university and have facedparticularly difficult circumstances in order to earn their place at Sheffield.

“I was very happy to help out – my generation went to university for free, and I believe inpaying things forward,” said Lee. “It's upsetting to see bright and dedicated studentscontemplate giving up their studies because of financial pressures. Just like my literarycharacter Jack Reacher, if I see things that are wrong, I want to put them right.”

Lee was also presented with the University’s Silver Arrows donor lapel pin by ProfessorDominic Shellard, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Affairs, who commented, “This is anincredibly generous donation from Lee and Jane, and we are extremely grateful for theirsupport and commitment to the University. It is fantastic to see two of our alumni givingsomething back to help current students.”

The Jack Reacher Scholarships are the latest addition to the University’s excellentscholarship programme, funded by individual donations from alumni, current andformer members of staff, parents and friends. Since 2003, more than 350students have now received scholarships funded entirely by donations, many ofwhom have now graduated thanks to this support.

Funding promotes workexperienceUndergraduate students at the University of Sheffield now have theopportunity to undertake a work placement as part of their degree.Launched in 2007, a degree with Employment Experience offers themthe chance to spend one year working with an organisation to developtheir transferable skills, put academic theory into practice and increasetheir employability after graduation. This year the Alumni Fund hasprovided two Politics students each with a grant of £1,000 to enablethem to undertake internships with two local MPs.

Ben Dunckley is spending his internship year in the Westminster officeof Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield Attercliffe. He said, “I have had theopportunity to experience political life first hand. I believe that thisplacement will give me an edge over other candidates for futureemployment. It has also given me a whole new skill set to deal withoffice environments, high pressure situations and time management. These are skills that cannot be learnt in a university environment. Assuch it has very much rounded out my higher education experience.”

James Chadwick is working in the constituency office of Angela Smith,MP for Sheffield Hillsborough. “I wanted to do the internship because Iwant to stand out from other applicants,” he said. “The internship hasmotivated me to clarify what I want to do when I graduate – I’d like tojoin the civil service or local government. The grant has helped a lot. Itwould have been a struggle to fund myself otherwise. I’d like to thankthe donors who have made this possible.”

New plaque scheme:celebrating ourbenefactors

The University of Sheffield has an inspiring and proudtradition of support from an array of philanthropists. While many of the buildings across the campus arenamed after these generous individuals, their storyand connection to the University remains little knownto most of today’s staff, students and visitors. Now, aseries of plaques details the biographies of ourbenefactors past and present, and provides somecontext of what their gifts have meant to theUniversity. Those commemorated include:

Outside Firth Hall, Firth Court, Western BankMark Firth (one of the principal founders of whatwould become the University)

The entrance to the Rotunda (see above)William Edgar Allen (gave money for the first library, now the Rotunda in Firth Court)

Main stairs, Mappin BuildingSir Frederick Mappin (helped to found the TechnicalCollege, which later became the Faculty ofEngineering)

Development and Alumni Relations OfficeJ G Graves (his gift gave the UK its first purpose-builtStudents’ Union; the building is still part of theexpanded Students’ Union today)

CampusdevelopmentsHow we are using donations to enhance the University environment

New Exhibition Gallery on showThe Western Bank Library has emerged from a £3.4 million facelift and one of the most visibledevelopments is the Exhibition Gallery. A generous grant of £184,000 from the Wolfson Foundationhas been combined with a legacy of £100,000 from alumna Miss Margaret Lewis (BSc 1923), andother Alumni Fund gifts from many donors and friends of the University, to restore the originalexhibition space and provide state-of-the-art lighting and display technology.

Miles Stevenson, Director of Development, said, “The stunning redevelopment of the WesternBank Library Exhibition Gallery has been made possible thanks to donations from alumni, friendsand organisations. We are planning to arrange events in conjunction with the exhibitionprogramme over the coming months and look forward to welcoming many of our alumni andsupporters to this wonderful new venue.”

The Exhibition Gallery, which is open to the public, will display items from the library’s SpecialCollections and from the National Fairground Archive, as well as host visiting exhibitions from timeto time. The first exhibition, Humbug!, celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of impresarioPT Barnum – the self-proclaimed ‘world’s greatest showman’ – and runs until 27 May 2010. Thiscolourful display will be followed by an exhibition from the British Library.

Humbug! has been curated by Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of the National FairgroundArchive. She commented, “This new space is a fantastic asset for the University. I can’t wait to seestaff, students and visitors enjoying Humbug! and many more exhibitions here in the future.”

Martin Lewis, Director of Library Services and University Librarian, added, “It’s been wonderful tosee the Western Bank Library emerging from this refurbishment able to provide a betterenvironment for our students and researchers, and yet closer to the architectural vision itembodied when it opened in 1959. Along with the Information Commons, we now have libraryfacilities appropriate to one of the world’s top 100 universities.”

Medical SchoolLibraryThe late Dr David Ryan (MB ChB1970) very kindly left a legacy forthe Medical School Library to helpcurrent medical students. TheMedical School Library is part ofthe Health Sciences Library whichserves the staff and students ofthe Faculty of Medicine, Dentistryand Health as well as NHS staff inSheffield. Dr Ryan’s bequest hasfunded a flexible study space sothat students can create aworking environment that isrelevant to their needs.

Vic Grant, Faculty Librarian forMedicine, said, “We are verygrateful for the legacy gift from DrRyan which will provide a superblearning environment for ourcurrent medical students.”

Bone storage facilityThe new Juvenile Developmental OsteologyReference Collection, based in the Department ofArchaeology, provides museum standard storagespace for juvenile skeletons of all developmentalages, from the late foetal stage to approximately 12years old. The new storage facility has been madepossible by a £25,000 grant from the Alumni FundTelephone Campaign.

Around 600 skeletons and associated researchmaterials are on display in the collection space, allof which are used for graduate research andtraining as well as staff and visiting academics’research. These remains are considered vital bythe department as they provide a record of howthe skeleton grew and matured in pastpopulations. The new facility will ensure suchdelicate materials are curated securely and can beretrieved rapidly with minimal physicaldisturbance.

Professor Andrew Chamberlain said, “The storagefacility will form an integral part of our plannedCentre for Human Bioarchaeology. It will make itmuch easier for researchers to study the juvenileskeletons which provide an important resource forresearch on skeletal growth and development inpast populations.”

TheCharlesworthSuiteWe reported on the generousgift left by Ray CharlesworthMBE to the Department ofChemistry in the last issue ofDonor News. The gift of£180,000 has resulted in apermanently endowedscholarship fund to help giftedChemistry students who mightotherwise struggle with thecosts of University. Now, inrecognition of Ray’s devotionand generosity, the departmenthas named a newly refurbishedpair of its rooms theCharlesworth Suite in hishonour. The refurbishment wasmade possible by £10,000 ofdonations from alumni, currentand former staff and friends tothe University’s Alumni Fund.

Professor Mike Ward, Head ofthe Department of Chemistry, said, “Ray would have beenthrilled to know that his moneyis helping chemists of the futureto further develop their skills. The naming of the Chemistrycommon room is a fitting tributeto a man who was muchadmired and loved by all in thedepartment.”

“I’ve been running ‘University ofSheffield in America’ from USsoil for over a year now, and I’dlike to say a huge thank you for allyour support and good wishessince the move. I’ve had a chanceto meet lots of US alumni on mytravels, and I am really enjoyingbeing one of you!”

Helen Rey (BA 1996)Executive Director – Universityof Sheffield in America

PO Box 177Spokane, WA 99210Tel: (+1) 509.994.5102Email: [email protected]

Matthew Irwin from Montana State is currentlystudying in Sheffield and said, “The mostchallenging and rewarding aspect of my course isthe research. What I enjoy most are the friends I'vemade in Sheffield; without them my time herewouldn't have been half as much fun. Thisscholarship took a lot of weight off my shoulders, tonot have to ‘nickel and dime’ everything, allowingme to breathe and enjoy myself and not worryfinancially. I feel so fortunate to have been chosen.”

We have awarded another tenUS Study Abroad scholarships toAmerican students, helpingthem to spend a year or asemester in Sheffield. Thesescholarships are entirely paid forby US alumni donations, andhelp us to attract more studentsto our international exchangeprogramme.

The University’s Department of Landscape, together with Ark Design and ManagementLtd, exhibited an award-winning, innovativeshow garden at the Chelsea Flower Show2009. The Future Nature garden was basedon principles of sustainability, making themost of recycled materials and storedrainwater to create a colourful, wildlife-friendly display. The project, which gained aSilver-Gilt Flora medal, received generoussponsorship from the Alumni Fund andYorkshire Water.

Dr Nigel Dunnett, Reader in the Departmentof Landscape, said, “The Future Naturegarden presents our vision of gardens, buildings and urban spaces, filled andcovered with exuberant planting for thebenefit of people, wildlife and the widerenvironment. The ideas in this garden canbe used anywhere and by anyone. Artisticuse of found and re-used materials, a senseof thrift and restraint, conservation and themanagement of every drop of rainwater arekey principles of the design. Future Nature isa new nature – beautiful and intimate, butalso an essential part of how we could live inthe future.”

$50,000 boost to glaucomaresearch and diagnosisResearchers at the University’s Medical School have been given theopportunity to investigate new and improved diagnostic techniques forpatients developing glaucoma. Thanks to a very generous donation of$50,000, the Sheffield team will use new high resolution imagingequipment to evaluate new and discomfort-free ways to make a reliablediagnosis.

Glaucoma can be a secondary problem stemming from acute orchronic uveitis – a painful inflammation of the eye. Gonioscopy, theusual technique for diagnosing glaucoma, involves contact with thesurface of the eye, making it uncomfortable and difficult to perform forpatients with uveitis.

Dr Raymond Harrison (MB ChB 1948), an alumnus now living in NewYork, has forged an accomplished career as an ophthalmologistspecialising in glaucoma. His connection with academic researchers atthe University led to the donation of $50,000 from the Eye-Bank forSight Restoration to address this problem. Professor Ian Rennie, Headof the Academic Unit of Ophthalmology and Orthoptics in Sheffield, willuse the donation in a study utilising a high resolution OCT (opticalcoherence tomography) imaging machine, which it is hoped will lead toadvances in glaucoma diagnostics in the special group of patients.Members of the Unit will conduct a clinical research programme toevaluate the effectiveness of this new approach.

Since the last editionof Donor News,American alumni havegiven $78,000 to the‘University of Sheffieldin America’, bringingour grand total to over$275,000. On top ofthis, American alumnihave given the Sterlingequivalent of over$200,000 direct to theUniversity in the UK.

New York novelistprovides scholarshipfundDid you know that the Sheffield graduate featuredon page 10 is one of our American alumni?Originally from the UK, Jim Grant (aka Lee Child)(LLB 1977, Hon LittD 2009) met his American wifeJane (BA 1975) at the University’s Drama Studio. They now live in New York City and are activemembers of the ‘University of Sheffield inAmerica’. Jim and Jane earmarked two of the JackReacher Scholarships for American postgraduatestudents: £3,000 each has been awarded to KevinGibbons (MSc Environmental Archaeology andPalaeoeconomy), a graduate of the University ofGeorgia, and David Woodsmall (MA Philosophy),from Wesleyan University, CT.

Bob BoucherScholarshipsAmerican alumni were exceptionally generous inhonouring the memory of former Vice-ChancellorProfessor Bob Boucher, who sadly passed away inspring 2009. The USA Alumni Fund appeal in hisname raised an incredible $18,000, enough toprovide four Bob Boucher Scholarships. We knowthat Bob’s family took great comfort from thiscaring and generous response. (Also see page 2.)

CaliforniangatheringCalifornian alumni enjoyed alittle piece of Sheffield inSeptember 2009, when theAmerican Alumni Reunion cameto San Francisco. Guests enjoyeda dinner in the historic Westin St Francis Hotel in Union Square. With over 50 guests, this wasour largest gathering of Sheffieldalumni on American soil so far.Let’s see if we can break thisrecord in 2010, when we holdthe American Reunion in NewYork City. A provisional date hasbeen set for Saturday 4September 2010.

Sheffield’s very own mean machineThe Pedal Car Society (PedSoc) was established in April 2009 by agroup of second-year Mechanical Engineering students eager to applya developing engineering knowledge base to a complex and challengingtask. With support from the University, the Wilson Memorial Fund andthe Alumni Fund the team designed and built a recumbent racer tocompete in the British Pedal Car Championship 2009 – in simpleterms, the pedal car is a sit-down bike with four wheels, powered byhuman pedalling.

The championship consists of a series of races running from March toSeptember each year, varying in length from frantic one-hour sprintsto 24-hour tests of endurance. Races require between four and sixdrivers backed by the vital race support team. In 2010, the team willalso compete in the Annual European Pedal Car Championships inFrance.

Ewan Ashburn, PedSoc President, said, “Without the help andassistance that the Alumni Fund provided, we would never have beenable to establish a team to take part in the British Pedal CarChampionship. PedSoc established itself as a unique University societylast year and will, without doubt, continue for many years into thefuture – none of which would have been possible without the donors’support. A massive thank you from the whole PedSoc team!”
