REACHING NEW SUMMITS

2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Page 2: REACHING NEW SUMMITS - Keystone Science School...DEAR FRIENDS, Looking back, it’s hard to believe that Keystone Science School ended its first full year as an independent organization,

DEAR FRIENDS,

Looking back, it’s hard to believe that Keystone Science School ended its first full year as an independent organization, after thirty-eight years as part of the Keystone Center. Forging our own trail in 2014 allowed us the opportunity to reach new summits and we are proud to report to you that our financials are strong, our vision unwavering and our programs expanding. We are touching the lives of more individuals through science education than ever before and our programs are expanding to include physics and even more science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principals for young people. Truly, we are reaching new summits, but we aren’t stopping there-- we are planning our next trek to even greater heights.

Science is in our name, it’s who we are. Our efforts to bring science education impacted over 6,700 individuals in 2014. This number continues to grow steadily, something we’re proud of, but we are most proud that we are not just about numbers, we have a firm commitment to quality in our programs and standards. We worked with educators close to home and as far away as the United Kingdom reigniting their passion for teaching and giving them the tools to help students think critically, like scientists. We imbedded concepts of physics in our camp programs opening the eyes of campers who never expected to see ‘science all around them’. We partnered with schools to ensure that what students are learning extends beyond the walls of the classroom and makes a lasting impression. Our newest program, the CATCH Afterschool program, provides science education through the lens of nutrition and healthy habits to a largely underserved population. Science is at our core and we continue to work diligently to be sure it isn’t just in our name, but always at the center of what we do.

Our teacher education, camper, and after-school programs are the foundation of our mission, but we see further in the distance as well. We understand that STEM education is a key component in critical thinking in our world today and we have applied that in our Girls in STEM pilot program. This already popular program reaches younger girls in a natural outdoor environment to introduce them to confidence and leadership skills through STEM principles.

With science as our foundation, KSS’s personality is framed by the adventure and fun we instill in teaching and learning in all we do. We know that these qualities are experienced differently by all who interact with KSS. For some, the adventure is being away from home or making new friends. For others, adventure is found in reaching a high mountain’s peak or uncovering the layers of snow after digging a snow pit. Throughout 2014 we celebrated our adventurous and light-hearted spirit in proven ways and we look forward to applying them to new programs in 2015 and beyond.

Keystone Science School is excited to continue its work building upon our strong foundation for an exciting future ahead. Our three year strategic plan was approved by our Board of Directors in 2014 and serves as a guide for our annual goals. We’re dreaming big, but remain focused on the quality of our programs, staff and campus and our amazing family of participants and supporters. We think you’ll agree that we’re heading in the right direction for focused growth and long-term stability.

As always, we welcome your feedback and appreciate all you do to ensure that Keystone Science School can stay true to its motto, bringing Science. Adventure. and Fun! to the world for years to come.

Warmly,

Ellen Reid Douglas D. SimsExecutive Director Board Chairman

OUR MISSIONKeystone Science School educates youth and adults to broaden perspectives and foster appreciation for engaged citizenship. We accomplish this through meaningful and collaborative learning experiences in the natural mountain environment that incorporate nonbiased scientific inquiry, leadership development, civic engagement and academic rigor.

OUR VALUESWe change lives. It’s a lofty claim, but we know that people are impacted through their experiences at Keystone Science School. Our lives have been transformed and we inspire others to reflect, grow, and change as well.

We foster open, honest relationships. We care about each other and those we serve and strive to be approachable, friendly, and authentic in all interactions. We believe that being mindful leads to higher levels of professionalism and instills trust.

We strive for excellence. We maintain high expectations for ourselves and seek challenges for the betterment of those we serve. We embrace an entrepreneurial spirit and incorporate innovative ideas into our programs.

We find joy in teaching and learning. We live our mission and bring fun and laughter to everything we do, every day. We’re academic, but far from boring.

We ask questions and seek solutions. We inspire critical thinking in each other and those with whom we work. By presenting topics and issues in a non-biased way, we provide tools to learn how to think, not what to think.

We are accountable. The numbers are equally as important as the mission. Transparency is critical and we keep a close eye on financial success.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT

GIRLSIN STEM

At Keystone Science School, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is an integral part of every experience. As we continue to find more ways to include STEM in the KSS experience, our inaugural Girls in STEM program was introduced in 2015. This program was designed to promote not only the STEM concepts, but highlight women in STEM careers, build leadership and collaboration between girls through the scientific and engineering process, and having tons of science fun! The Girls in STEM program is designed to do just that.

The KSS Girls in STEM program consists of four one-day sessions each year dedicated to motivation, reflection, and action in STEM. Girls are surrounded by female professionals to encourage more girls and woman to enter these vital fields of the future. At KSS, we want all children to grow up believing in their own abilities, asking tough questions, and competing in an ever-changing, dynamic and technology-driven marketplace. By planting the seeds early in their leaning experience in ways that are unique to a traditional classroom setting, we believe that the girls who participate in the program will indeed reach new heights in critical thinking and ultimately, perhaps, in embracing STEM professions.

Girls in STEM is designed to: • Motivate and encourage participation and leadership in young females in STEM related fields;• Incorporate the engineering and scientific process into interactive, engaging activities, while promoting positive growth feedback;• Inspire collaboration between students of different ages and grades; and• Create reflective conversation and journaling to stimulate inward thought and consideration of leadership and academic potential.

The momentum for this program is already strong and we are committed to continuing to build upon its success so

that even more girls can build their confidence in science, technology and math learning well into the future.

FINANCIALSThe Keystone Science School financial reporting pages that follow are something we are proud to showcase in this Annual Report. In our first full year as an independent 501(c)(3), we believe we have set a high bar for ourselves to be financially healthy as we maintain strong programs, staff and facilities, all while looking forward to further investing in all three of these to reach new heights as well. We believe that being financially stable year-over-year while building up reserves is important to be truly successful. In that regard, we have begun to receive and report reserves for facilities, programs and emergency funds.

In our first full financial reporting year, 2014, our unrestricted operating surplus was $147,768. We are eternally grateful to our many donors and volunteers for making this surplus possible, such that we can consider reinvestment so early in our independence to ensure not only the highest quality today, but in the future as well. Our total asset base grew from $3,436,147 at the end of 2013 to $3,870,103 at the end of 2014.

We remain strongly committed to our conservative financial philosophies. We have a reinvestment plan for our year-end surpluses, and have identified the following priority areas for our reinvestment:

• Long-Term Reserves• Short-Term Emergency Reserves• Program Reinvestment• Staff Incentives • Capital Improvements to Existing Structures

Each year, the KSS Board of Directors and Finance Committee, in partnership with the Executive Director with staff member input, determine the ratios for reinvestment in each of these key areas. We remain flexible year-over-year to allocate for the highest need and ability to fund. We are committed to sustainability, such that in any given year, we are not dramatically impacted by an unforeseen operating or capital needs.

We are grateful for the generous support of so many individuals and businesses in supporting our mission and values. We are committed to safeguarding our financial resources for the benefit of all of our stakeholders today and into the future.

Report on the Financial StatementsWe have audited the accompanying financial statements of Keystone Science School, Inc., which comprise the statement of financial position as of December 31, 2014, and the related statements of activities and cash flows for the year then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements.

Management’s Responsibility for the Financial StatementsManagement is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor’s ResponsibilityOur responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

OpinionIn our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Keystone Science School, Inc. as of December 31, 2014, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.
