REACH OUT AND READ RHODE ISLAND 1

Reach Out and Read Rhode Island (RORRI) gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together.

WHY REACH OUT AND READ RHODE ISLAND?

The Opportunity of a LifetimeWhat happens during the first few years sets the stage for the rest of a child’s life. More than 95 percent of a child’s brain is formed during this critical period, and a child’s experiences irreversibly affect how the brain develops—for better or worse.

Positive, responsive parenting during the early years creates the strong parent-child bonds that promote healthy brain development.

Seizing the Moment RORRI doctors and nurse practitioners have the great-est access to families with children in the early years.

We encourage parents to read aloud daily to their infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, as a simple and effective way of fostering nurturing, language-rich family interactions that support brain development and provide a foundation for success.

Our Unique Model At more than 10 routine health checkups from infancy through five years, RORRI trained providers:

• Talk with parents and caregivers about how important it is to read aloud and engage with their young children

• Demonstrate how best to look at books and talk about the stories with their infants, toddlers, and preschoolers

• Encourage families to cuddle up and read together at home and build routines around books

• Give a new book to the family to reinforce reading aloud

At the end of the program, every child has a home- library of books, each given with the advice to parents and caregivers that they are their child’s first and most important teacher.

We Deliver Results Our program is evidence-based, supported by independent, published research studies showing that the children we serve:

• Are read to more often by their parents

• Have improved language skills

• Have a greater love of reading

Cost-Effective & ScalableRORRI is easily integrated into pediatric care - the American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed our model, promoting it as “an essential component of pediatric primary care.”

The Path to Lifelong SuccessHow do we ensure every child in Rhode Island is prepared to become a contributing member and leader in all sectors of society? We know that intervention—as early as possible—is fundamental to lifelong success. RORRI begins at six months, encouraging parents and caregivers to read aloud to their children, which promotes development of language, emergent literacy skills, and parent-child bonding. Helping children enter kindergarten with early skills puts them on the path to experience later academic success, attain higher levels of education, and secure employment.

Over the past two years, with both private and public support, we increased the number of children who participate in the RORRI model by expanding from 50 medical practices to 72 health centers and doctor’s offices. Today, we are reaching 56% of children under age six.

This deliberate expansion is at the core of what we are striving to achieve. Rhode Island has the third highest rate for health insurance coverage for children under 18. With over 98% of our children covered, this invest-ment in our youngest generation signals to the rest of the country our values, which are the foundation of RORRI.

With our attention to the future, we have begun stra-tegic planning that will be thoughtful, concise, and relevant. Continued growth and sustainability will be at the forefront of our planning.

Our 20th anniversary is right around the corner and we invite you to stay connected, to share our pride in past accomplishments, and to participate in our future progress. The success of RORRI cannot be realized without our generous and loyal supporters. Thank you!

Looking forward,

A Message from RORRI’S Executive Director & Board Chair

RORRI’s mission to promote early literacy is a tremendously effective way to create strong family bonds, build parental confidence and establish the concept that reading is a hugely important activity in a child’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. I am proud and grateful to be involved in a program that aligns so well with my practice’s mission to foster optimal child development and healthy family relationships.
