Hills Hawks 3 – Panthers 2

It was a clear blue sky day when the Panthers packed their passports and took the trip to Galston to play the 2nd placed Hills

Hawks. After missing another week of football, the Panthers couldn’t wait to test themselves against one of the competition’s

best.

Captain Ethan got the team rolling with a stirring speech and winning the toss. Zayan immediately followed this up with an

intercept at the kick off and dribbling his way through, forcing an early save from the Hawks’ surprised defence. It was game

on.

A full training session with Steve and Daryl practicing the art of corners paid immediate dividends. Zayan’s expertly curling

corner kicks were met by wave after wave of Panthers charging onto the ball from deep. The first attempt forced a scrambling

save. And it was not long before another corner kick was picked up by Alec, who coolly slotted his FIRST GOAL OF THE SEA-

SON!!! OH YEAH!!!! PANTHERRRRSSS!! Alec’s touchline Dad Mike excitedly waved his arms about in jubilation for so long

that the poor ref had no idea whose throw-in it was for minutes after the goal was scored... ha ha. Congratulations Alec, after so

many close calls all season, your goal was richly deserved. May there be many more!

After a solid quarter of a match of domination by the Panthers, the Hawks started to show why they are ranked 2nd on the com-

petition table with some tight marking in defence and smart passing play. The Panthers backline of Jocelyn, Kristabelle, Ben

and Krishna worked tirelessly to repel the Hawks’ attack. Chloe kept bravely and strongly in her first effort in goals and

Jocelyn showed toughness in playing through the match with a sore studded right foot. The halves also played a good mixture

of attack and defence, with Ethan marshalling the troops in Centre Half, Ella always threatening in her position on the left and

Aiden getting stuck into his first ever go on the right. Unfortunately, however, three Hawks goals were scored in quick succes-

sion. The Panthers learnt about staying in position in defence and marking up at corners.

But were the Panthers’ heads bowed in defeat at half time? Never!!

The second half was completely dominated by the girls and boys in blue. Oscar was a terror in his striking position, working

tirelessly in attacking the Hawks, winning balls and dribbling dangerously all over the park. Kristabelle and Oscar have devel-

oped a telepathic understanding this season and they exchanged some wonderful one-two passes and through balls. Our halves

were again very effective, with Evan running the midfield like a little general, with Ella and Alec on the left and Aiden and

Krishna on the right. The attacking intent of the team was there for all to see early in the second half when Evan cracked a

curling right foot shot from deep that almost got past the Hawks’ goalkeeper.

And then the Panthers corner scoring apparatus swung into gear again. Oscar hooked a beautiful ball into the box, with the

first wave of Panthers pouncing on the poor Hawks defenders. The ball squeezed out of the defensive line only for the second

wave of Panthers to arrive. Having been denied earlier, Evan made his second short count with a fierce right shot into the left

hand side of the net. GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!

The Panthers were on fire!

The next 15 minutes saw desperate Panthers attack against an equally desperate Hawks defence. Our backs got into the act

too. We have discovered another accomplished back in Te Kohu who, like his right back buddy Ethan was damaging in defence

and was then able to make penetrating runs with the ball from deep, picking out midfielders in the clear. Ben and Chloe domi-

nated in Centre Back, with Chloe almost scoring from the half way line with a thunderous long bomb! And Jocelyn showed that

some studs in her right foot did not stop her with a lovely clearance kick with her LEFT FOOT (is she really left

footed??!!). Zayan had a relatively quiet half in goals thanks to his Panthers teammates but made some fantastic saves when

required, backing up his stellar effort in the first half as striker.

Unfortunately, time was against the Panthers and the final score ended 3-2 to the Hawks.

The kids had a fantastic time and the parents were clearly the loudest cheerleaders on the sidelines. It was a very entertaining

match. All the kids deserved an award and many thanks to the Ricketts family for shouting the team a treat after the

game. I’m sure the kids would trade them for oranges any week!! Ha ha

Chloe was congratulated for her strong comeback match after missing many games with an Encouragement Award. Evan was

awarded Player of the Match for not only his goal but strong organisational play in Centre Half. One of the key qualities in this

position is knowing when to attack and defend. There were many times when Evan would cover for his backs when they got

engaged in a contest and moved out of their position, being there to clear out an attacking cross from an otherwise unmarked

striker, and then surging forward in attack when the time was right. Evan’s goal was a classic centre half’s goal. There are

many other Panthers who have learnt this through the season and it has been great to watch!

Te Kohu also deserves a special mention for sportsmanship, when he immediately kicked the ball out of play after a Hawks

striker copped a nasty ball to the body. The boy was thankfully OK and the Hawks parent on the touchline made special in-

structions for his team to kindly return the ball to Te Kohu at the throw in. Fantastic play all around. Well done team and

can’t wait for next Saturday! See you at training, Cheers, Daryl—COACH RDP U11/6 2015

Remember, if you TRAIN WELL you will PLAY WELL.

A great read.. MATCH REPORT

Hi Kim,

My name is Matt Boorer President of the Epping

Bulls Cricket Club

We are looking for new player coming into this

season and we are reaching out to surrounding

football clubs like yours to help promote our up-

coming season through your clubs members. We

are aiming to make this a cross club promotion

arrangement.

If you are able to promote cricket to your mem-

bers through the best means of your club for this

season and when it comes time for Soccer regis-

trations next season we can promote your club

through our members.

Our cricket club has a far reach and we play in the 2nd tier level of cricket in NSW on turf wickets so we are different to

your local park cricket club and we do not necessarily draw players from the immediate suburb of Ep-

ping but more to the surrounding suburbs.

Thanks for your time

Regards
