Spotlight: Small vessel repairs gaining momentum

Meet the team

Launched in late 2012, the small vessel repair facility, also known as ‘Phase 5’ of the Er-

hama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard development , has chalked up a significant number of

projects since its inception. The facility has attracted regional interest from offshore sup-

port vessel owners and operators alike. Over 30 repairs have been completed to date for

clients such as Nakilat Svitzerwijsmuller, Qatar & US Navy, Halul Offshore, Stanford Ma-

rine, SMIT and Topaz Marine to name a few.

Occupying an area of 7.8 hectares, the facility comprises of a 200m floating quay, two

mobile boat hoists (300T and 1,100T), a production support workshop, four 25T tower

cranes and a 30,264 sqm dry berth that doubles up as an offshore fabrication area. A

Handymax-size floating dock is currently under construction within the vicinity of the facility

to provide additional docking and repair options for our clients.

Repairs that have been undertaken include underwater hull inspection, machinery repairs,

hull cleaning and painting, offshore access system installation and various types of repair

for the vessels’ hull, tank and superstructure, including the bollard pull test.

“We are encouraged by the

strong support from clients since

beginning operations in late 2012

and look forward to attracting

more clients to our facility.”

Repairs on the rise for tankers following Vela’s first VLCC dock-

ing for Al Butain Star last De-

cember. Aside from the two Vela

VLCCs, N-KOM also carried out

repairs for two other VLCCs

(Bunga Kasturi Enam and Aus-

tralis) for new clients AET Ship-

management and Chandris Hel-

las.

Other notable tanker repairs

carried out were for Samos

Steamships’ 105,317dwt tanker

Nectar and more recently, Eu-

ronav’s 158,765dwt tanker Cap

Felix.

*Source: OPEC Report, June 2013

The Middle East offers a large

captive market for tanker re-

pairs, with almost *53% of the

global oil reserves located in this

region. This noticeable growth in

the number of tankers plying the

Arabian Gulf is evident from the

increasing number of enquiries

N-KOM receives for tanker re-

pairs at its facility. This year

alone, the shipyard has carried

out 60% more tanker repairs

than the same period last year

for new and existing clients.

Sister-ships Sirius Star and Vega

Star from Vela International Ma-

rine both underwent drydocking

and repairs this year at N-KOM

Ensco 84 was delivered

with zero LTIs and on

schedule to the satisfac-

tion of our client, Ensco.

The project proceeded

smoothly in accordance

with the requirements

laid out in Schedule G of

the Saudi Aramco guide-

line, as was previously

done for the Ensco 91

refurbishment project last

year.

Works carried out on the

jack up rig include vari-

ous modifications and

extensions to the emer-

gency generator room,

accommodation walkway

extension, and AC con-

denser platform. High

pressure piping and me-

chanical systems were

fabricated and installed

for the drill floor, main

engine, flare line, cement-

ing unit, emergency gen-

erator and flare booms.

Other key repairs carried

out were the Hillman roll-

er installation, inclusive of

design support and struc-

tural modification, over-

hauling of main engine

alternators and addition of

a 4th new main engine

which was integrated with

the existing engine power

management system along

with the required modifica-

tion and engineering de-

sign support.

Installation, testing and

commissioning of the

emergency generator and

the integration of the con-

trol panel with the existing

system was also carried

out, apart from the electri-

cal hook up, commission-

ing and load testing for the

emergency generator unit

and main engine.

Commenting on the safe

and timely completion of

the project was Ensco Pro-

ject Manager Mr Lalit Ku-

mar Patil, who said, “We

are highly pleased with the

professional manner with

which N-KOM serviced the

rig Ensco 84. The quality of

service provided fulfilled

our required standards and

met with our expectations.”

Weatherford Drilling’s 1500HP Rig 803

was the first land rig project undertaken

by the recently established Offshore,

Onshore and Industrial Engineering (OEI)

division, led by an experienced project

management team adept at land rig new-

builds and repairs.

Previously cold-stacked in Libya, the land

rig components were shipped in contain-

ers to the yard for assembly, installation

and rigging up prior to the commence-

ment of well drilling activities for RasGas

in Qatar.

Under the supervision of OEMs (Original

Equipment Manufacturers), all the com-

ponents were refurbished and necessary

spares were changed.

Over a 3-month period, complete refur-

bishment was carried out for rig com-

ponents such as the topdrive,

mudtanks, traveling and crown block,

engine radiator and rotary table.

Load tests were done for the BOP

handling system, air winches and

man-rider winch while maintenance

was done for the choke and kill mani-

fold.

Apart from these, N-KOM also carried

out complete electrical rewiring of

the rig. New skids for solid control

pumps and hydraulic power unit

skids were fabricated for the rig.

General repairs were carried out for

the SHELL-chartered liftboat Rising

Phoenix.

Ensco 84 Safety Recognition Ceremony On the completion of the rig refurbishment, N-KOM together with Ensco held a Safety Recognition cere-

mony to recognize the project team for achieving zero LTIs (lost time incident) whilst covering 160,587

man-hours over the two month period.

Commenting on the occasion was Rig Manager Mr Tom Fulton, who congratulated the N-KOM project

team for the remarkable achievement and encouraged them to keep up the high standard of safety in

the shipyard and continue to deliver quality and timely work.

Partnership inked with Turbo Technik

Our partner since late 2010, MAN Diesel & Turbo Qatar was the first sub-

contractor to set-up its office within the shipyard. Since then, both teams have

jointly serviced over 350 vessel, either repaired at the shipyard or at the gas

terminal in the Port of Ras Laffan. Under the Engine Management Concept

(EMC) agreement with N-KOM, they operate three workshops within the ship-

yard complex and undertake:

Troubleshooting/technical support for MAN Diesel & Turbo engines and

turbochargers

Drydocking supervision and overhauling/reconditioning of all diesel en-

gine components (governors/turbochargers)

Reconditioning of cylinder covers and exhaust valve spindles

Static/Couple/Dynamic Balancing for all turbochargers

Ultrasonic cleaning of air cooler (Auxiliary engines)

Overhauling of fuel equipment for all diesel engines

Ole Skatka Jensen, Managing Director of MAN Diesel & Turbo Qatar said,” The

co-operation between us and N-KOM goes well beyond the usual business part-

nership. Through creativity and teamwork from both sides, we are constantly

focused on customer’s needs and able to deliver effectively. It has been a great

pleasure to work with N-KOM over the past three years and we look forward to

more years to come.”

YAR D D EVEL O PMEN TS

N-KOM recently signed an agreement with leading German service provid-

er Turbo Technik at the marine industry’s biggest gathering this year- Nor-

Shipping in Oslo, Norway.

Under the signed agreement, Turbo Technik will establish its operations in

Qatar along with a team of specialist engineers, primarily focusing on LNG

cryogenic equipment, compressors, turbine works and boiler repairs. The

agreement comes as part of N-KOM’s effort to continuously enhance our

range of services to our clients. The partnership will also allow Turbo Tech-

nik to capitalise on the shipyard’s extensive facilities and outreach to

serve its clients better from a strategic location in the Arabian Gulf.

Abu Bakar Mohd Nor, CEO of N-KOM said: “N-KOM is continuously seeking

to establish partnerships and collaborations with leading names in the

industry to offer the best to our clients. Having Turbo Technik onboard the

team would not only be beneficial for the yard’s ship-repair and mainte-

nance business but also gives us an opportunity to offer a comprehensive

solutions as well as additional flexibility to dispatch teams to inspect and repair vessels at anchorage when required by ship

owners.”

Supporting his view on the partnership was Martin Dassler , Managing Director of Turbo Technik Middle East who said, “Turbo

Technik is pleased to have a well-established partner such as N-KOM to further our interests in the marine repair business,

especially in the Middle East.”

Turbo-Technik is a world-wide operating service and repair company in the field of commercial vessels, navy ships and indus-

trial plants. Since the mid 70-ties, the world-wide service for LNG carriers and cryogenic equipment has been a speciality for

Turbo-Technik.

tles in the Ras Laffan area, are vulner-

able to the harmful effects brought

about by coastal pollution. The clean-

up is significant in creating a sustaina-

ble environment for them to live and

breed in.”

Blood Donation Drive A total of 70 staff participated in a

blood donation drive jointly organized

by Nakilat and Hamad Medical Cor-

poration in May 2013.

A mobile caravan came to the ship-

yard for the day and participants

were screened by the hospital’s staff

prior to the procedure.

Throughout the day, there were smiles

all around as our staff played a signifi-

cant role in making a difference in the

life of others!

N-KOM held our first agent’s workshop from 15-16 May 2013 with agency representatives from around the

world. A total of 13 participants joined us for the workshop, which involved presentations and high-level stra-

tegic discussions about the respective market developments to date and opportunities abound. Our man-

agement team led the agents on a comprehensive yard tour, where they had a chance to better understand

our operations so as to effectively market us within their areas.
