Upaya Japan Arts Pilgrimage: Ancient and Contemporary Art and Sacred Sites April 4-19, 2018 Dear Friends, Thank you for joining Upaya’s 2018 Japan Pilgrimage. Our pilgrimage focuses on the sacred art in Kyoto and Nara, the extraordinary art site projects in the Seto Inland Sea, including Naoshima, and the rare and beautiful pilgrimage route in the Kii mountain range in Kumano. We begin in Kyoto at the beautiful Nanzen Temple and visit traditional Zen gardens and temples, have a calligraphy demonstration by Kaz and a famous Kyoto calligrapher, experience a Japanese tea ceremony, learn about the tradition of Japanese crafts, and participate in the ritual of Buddha’s birthday at Nanzen temple. We then travel by private bus and boat to the Benesse art sites in Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima. From Naoshima, we travel through Shikoku to Kumano, a UNESCO world Heritage Site preserving the ancient culture of sacred pilgrimage. The history of Kumano is rooted in the tradition of nature worship in Japan as well in Buddhism. We then travel to the ancient capital of Japan, Nara, to further explore the roots of Japanese culture and conclude our journey in this very special place, where we have many close friends who will introduce us to the sacred arts and culture of Japan. We hear presentations on art and Buddhism from Roshi Joan and Kaz and have special conversations with priests, artists, and artisans of each region. We also have time for meditation and free time to explore on our own.
