Background of CREST R&D Grant

• To accelerate R&D growth in the E&E sector through

knowledge and innovation

• CREST R&D Grant is aimed to establish a R&D

ecosystem with shared facilities and expertise between

University and Industry

• Joint research activities creates stronger collaborative

platform between industry and academia as well as

raising capacity for knowledge and innovation

CREST grant covers the area of E&E engineering

in particular the niche areas identified as below:

Criteria of CREST R&D Grant

• Project must involve one company and at least one

university.

• Companies applying for the grant must be located in the

Northern Region.

• Academic applicants or co-researchers must be located in

the Northern Region unless the specified expertise is not

available.

The grant is open to industries and academia with

the following conditions:


• A complete company profile with the proof of company’s

commitment (a letter signed by top management) shall be

submitted together with the application form.

• Applications from academia must be accompanied with a

supporting letter from head of department / dean.

• The project proposal must be research oriented and

aimed at providing innovative solutions.

• Upon acceptance of CREST R&D Grant, the project must

not be used for the application of other grant sources.


• Contribution from the company must be equal or more

than the amount of budget requested from CREST.

• A proposed disbursement schedule shall be submitted.

These disbursements must be linked to the achievement

of the specific milestones.

• The CREST R&D grant shall not be used for any other

purpose other than stated in the Agreement.

• Total allocation requested should not exceed the

maximum amount.


• Students involved in the CREST R&D projects shall be

Malaysian citizen.

• Each applicant is allowed to submit only one application in

each phase of the grant.

• A Project Leader from company must obtain a written

commitment from the top management to allocate at least

80% of their time for the project.


• Research Period

• The maximum research duration shall be 2 years.

• A quarterly progress report shall be submitted to CREST Center. If

the research project does not show any progress, it may be

terminated.

• Extension of projects is subjected to the excellence of

progress/outcomes and the availability of funds.


• Allowances (Emoluments)

• The budget is to pay the Master and/or PhD students only. The

wages and allowance for PhD student must not exceed

RM2500/month and for Master student must not exceed

RM1800/month. Priority will be given to Industrial PhD and

Industrial Master candidates.

• Other personnel cost (travel, transport,

accommodation etc.)

• The budget covers all travelling expenses and local transportation

related to the project.

• Travelling overseas is not allowed.

• The amount requested for travelling shall not exceed 10% of total

applied grant.

Financial Regulations:


• Rental (space, equipment etc.)

• Rentals are only allowed for equipment, transportation and other

items that are directly related to the research.

• Procurement (equipment, research material,

disposables)

• Only the purchase of special equipment and materials related to

the research project are allowed. Provide a detailed list and

justifications of the requested equipment. The amount requested

shall not exceed 40% of the total grant allocation. Equipment

purchased using the R&D grant shall belong to CREST.



• Maintenance and repairs

• Only expenses for minor repairs and maintenance of equipment

related to the research is allowed.

• Miscellaneous

• Expenses for local/international conferences are not allowed.
