Rush Park has always been home to a variety of recreational activities and professional ventures, but on June 27th we were awed by a rather extraordinary event. Just in time for the 4th of July, an enormous American flag was spread out across two of our fields. This expanse of larger than life, red, white and blue magnificence, was truly a sight to be-
hold. The 160’x300’ ft. flag (the exact size of a professional football field) was being repaired, but no flaws were visible to park patrons who marveled at its size. Even the trees were dwarfed by its sheer scale. Speaking of American flags, we hope that everyone had a blast at the annual 4th of July fireworks celebration, cosponsored by the District and held at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base. facts and photos visit our Facebook and Twitter pages. —LD

Do you consider yourself a private person, or more of an open book? Are you shy or outgoing? Social Media sites like Facebook, Linked In, Pinterest and many more, have the power to transform the ordinary person into an instant celebrity. Facebook Timelines are effective branding tools, allowing you to present yourself to the world in whatever package you choose. Colorful photos and clever quips give you the ability to express yourself with abandon. Freedom of speech right? Beware of the Bandwidth Papa-razzi. Social Media information tracking is everywhere. In other words, your comments on social media sites are being monitored, sampled and col-lected by a variety of agencies for a myriad of reasons. Employers are giv-ing themselves permission to screen applicants using their Facebook and Twitter pages as tools. Celebrity can be intoxicating, even if your only claim to fame is Facebook. By the way, have you checked your privacy set-tings lately? Do you know who your “friends” and “followers” are? You’d better. Your privacy complaints are likely to fall on unsympathetic ears. Af-ter all, you entered into this willingly right? You volunteered your photos and information. This is the price of fame, however fleeting...isn’t that what we tell all the Hollywood A-Listers who seek solace? So “Buyer Beware”, nothing is ever free. Remember, what you post, can and will be held against you. Now that you know what you are getting into, choose to be informed. Click here for more information on social media privacy and
what you can do to plug the peephole. —LD

This will be the last time that I will author this column. The District is in the process of recruiting for a new General Manager. It hardly seems possible
that what I thought would be a short term assignment became a mini-career of a little
over six years. It has been my honor to serve the District Board of Directors and the
residents of this great community. While we may not have always agreed on all mat-
ters affecting the community, I knew that each of you always had the best interest of
Rossmoor in mind.
When the new General Manager is appointed, the Board has asked me to stay on as
an external affairs consultant to advise them on matters of governance. I will also be available for the orientation of the new General Manager. At an appropriate time the
Board will discontinue my services and the new Manager will then assume the full
responsibilities of the position.
I can look back and recall all that has happened during my tenure. I am most proud
of having established the District’s Recreation program, bringing order to the Dis-trict’s finances, upgrading many of our facilities and obtaining our designation as a
Tree City USA community. Other important matters included the early payoff of
$495,000 Rush Park bond, the negotiation of a comprehensive Memorandum of Un-derstanding regarding league softball play at Rossmoor Park, and the establishment
of a four-year capital improvement program.
What I see as the most important issue to be resolved is the future of Rossmoor as an
independent community. Despite all efforts to the contrary, the District and the com-
munity have fended off attempts to make Rossmoor a part of something else. I be-lieve that there is adequate evidence that the District delivers local services efficiently
and effectively. It is also apparent that Rossmoor pays more in taxes than it receives
from the County. With this in mind, the drive to make Rossmoor something else should come to a halt and instead, this community should be recognized as something
to emulate, rather than deride.
I want to thank the Board of Directors, our excellent staff, and the community, for the
opportunity to serve you. In my 50+ years of public service, these six years have been
the most rewarding. I bid you “Adios”. —HT
Congratulations to Mark Buono, winner of RCSD’s First Annual Opportunity Drawing, which took place at this year’s Rossmoor Community Festival. The Buono’s are now the proud owners of this beautiful wooden bookcase, built by West Coast Arborist, from reclaimed trees in Rossmoor. We would like to
thank Rob Thompson and West Coast Arborist for their generous dona-tion. The Buono family is sure to treasure their bookcase for years to
come —LD

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
Rossmoor Rocks!
Parkway trees are planted by our contractor, West Coast Arborists, Inc., and are staked and stable, but we need you, the resident, to help us keep young trees safe.
Please DO NOT move or remove the stakes supporting your tree. They will be removed when the tree is strong enough to stand on its own.
Please DO NOT use your weed-whacker around your tree, or if you must, be VERY CAREFUL! Weed-whackers can “girdle” or damage your young tree and it may die.
Please DO water your new tree. Don’t let it die of thirst!
Many thanks are due to everyone who has donated their time and effort in the care and planting of Rossmoor’s parkway trees.
