\ %RCM 1995 SWODS News 1995 SHOW April 15-16, 1995 Cincinnati Zoo The 1995 SWODS show will be at the Cincinnati Zoo on April 15 and 16. A show schedule is enclosed that gives all the details about entering the show. Be- cause of the Easter theme (the show is on Easter weekend), a special section for daffodils named after Easter is included. After the preliminary judging is completed, a seminar on 'Selection, Evaluation, and Exhibition of Miniature and Other Daffodils" will be conducted for the seven SWODS student judges(and others who might be interested). Helen Link has agreed to conduct this session and Tag Bourne has bi:.en in- vited to share the session with Helen. Exhibitors may gain free admittance and park- ing at the Zoo by display- ing the show schedule in their windshield and showing daffodils in the car. Help is of course needed for setup on Friday (plan to arrive between 7:30-9:00 AM) and dismantling on Sunday(when the show closes at 5:00 PM). The show schedule is again your admittance ticket. Enter at the employee gate. JUDGING SCHOOL III Judging School III will be held Sunday, April 9, at 9:00 at the Star Bank on Ludlow Avenue in Clifton. A fee of $5 00 is due for this school. Con- tact Mary Lou Gripshover (see resource list) for res- ervations. This school covers judging ethics, ADS awards, selection of material for exhibiting, grooming, methods of advancing and retarding blooms, transpor- tation of blooms, and point scoring with emphasis on judging by placements and judging miniatures. BRING US YOUR JARS Do you save or could you save your jars for us? Linda Wallpe plans to use flowers from the show, and any donated flowers from local gardens, to cheer up people convalescing in the VA hospital. From past experience Linda knows that this works best if we furnish our own containers, hence the jars. If you have some clean jars, labels removed, of a size appro- priate for a bouquet of daffodils (e.g., mayonnaise jars), please bring them to the show on either Satur- day or Sunday. They will not be returned as the hospital staff will dispose of them after the blooms have perished. Please clean the jars and remove the labels. This little bit of effort will help bring some Easter Joy to shut-ins. POST-SHOW DINNER On Saturday, April 15, we will again have a ca- tered dinner at the Civic Garden Center. The menu is still tentative, but the cost will be $17.00 per person, which includes complimentary wine and snacks before dinner. No program is planned; instead, we will take the opportunity to enjoy being together and sharing our common interests. We expect to have as our guests Elise Havens (proprietor of Grant Mitsch Novelty Daffodils), Martha Anderson (an expert stager of daffodils) and Leslie Anderson(former Ex- ecutive Director of ADS). All three are tentatively TIP In In his 1994 catalog, David Karnstedt describes a strategy for keeping Avalanche going in the cold Minnesota winters that would probably be effective here too. ODS \ FAN S planning to visit Cincinnati that weekend. Why not join them and the rest of us for dinner?

Reservations are required so that the catering firm can prepare the correct number of dinners. Re-serve with Linda Wallpe no later than April 9. You can call Linda (see resource list) or write to her at 1940 Gregory Lane, Cincinnati, OH 45206 Send her a check or pay her at the show on Saturday. Cock-tails will begin at 6:00, followed by dinner at ap-proximately 7:00.

BANNERS

Denny Huff has ac-quired two banners featur-ing daffodils for our use at shows and other functions. Come to the show and see them displayed. We hope to be able to arrange for some hardware outside the Peacock Pavilion at the Zoo so that our Daffodil Banners will help an-nounce that there are daffodils inside.

PEGGY MACNEALE HONORED

At the fall regional meeting of the ADS, SWODS chair Bill Lee presented Peggy Macneale with the first SWODS Distinguished Service Award. Peggy was one of the founding members of SWODS; however, she has continued to be extremely active on SWODS behalf in all the years since the founding. She pros-pects for new members, mentors new members, pres-ents lectures, programs, and slide shows, including one she created, and is always there whenever there is SWODS business to be done. Congratulations, Peggy!

DUES

Of course, no SWODS mailing would be com-plete without a plea to update your dues. Dues are always due at Showtime; therefore, 1995 dues are now due. Please note that the 2-digit number above your name on the mailing label shows the last year

you paid dues. A "P" indicates that you are a pro-spective member. Because the show schedule is in-cluded in this mailing, a few out-of-town exhibitors who receive this schedule will not have a code above their names. Dues are still only $5.00 per year. Send your payments to Liz Ragouzis, 425 Rawson Woods Lane, Cincinnati, OH 45220. If you think our records

are incorrect, call Liz at 221-1166.

TIPS

Nobody sent Bill Lee any tips. Again I appeal to you for tidbits to make this bulletin interesting.

How about a continuing feature on how different cul-tivars were named? Many of us know, for example, that Grant Mitsch named a number of daffodils after birds (and Peggy Macneale prepared a slide show comparing the actual birds with the flowers that bear their names). Murray Evans named many daffodils after geographic sites in the Pacific Northwest. An-other series is named after famous racehorses. Who has inside knowledge of some interesting daffodil no-menclature lore? Please Call Bill Lee(see Resource List).

IN MEMORIAM: FRAN ANEWALT

TOM DUNNE

We regret to announce the sad news that both Fran Anewalt, long-time Dayton member, and Tom Dunne, former member and constant supporter, have died in recent months. SWODS is making donations to ADS in each of their names. In addition, Liz Ra-gouzis is sponsoring a show trophy in Fran's name and SWODS is sponsoring an additional trophy in Tom's name. We will miss them both.

SPRLNG MEETING

We will have a meeting at a date to be announced after the show. Watch for details.

3 NEVER EXHIBITED BEFORE?

A lot of SWODS members enjoy exhibiting their daffodils at the annual show. Some never thought it was something they would like to do, until they did it the first time and got the 'bug." Why not give it a try? All you have to do is bring your best looking daffodils (flower and stem only--no foliage). If you know what cultivar it is, you can write that on the stem with a ballpoint pen. If you do not know what the cultivar is, our experts can help identify it. A lot of information needs to be written on the exhibitor's card for each flower entered, so be sure to leave plenty of time. The exhibit area will open at 7:30AM on Saturday and all flowers must be placed by 11:00AM, last call for entries, so plan your time carefully. If you have any questions about exhibit-ing, please call one of the people on the resource list. They'll all be happy to help with information. It's not hard to do and there are special divisions for people who have never entered before. Come win some blue ribbons.
