Riverside Community Diabetes Collaborative Turns 5!

Can you believe it? The Riverside Community

Diabetes Collaborative (RCDC) recently turned five

years old! The group formed in February 2007 in response to

the increasing number of persons diagnosed with and at risk for diabetes in

the greater Riverside area. The Collaborative was born out of the Foundation’s health

initiative focused on diabetes, and aimed to bring agencies together in order to maximize

diabetes resources and minimize duplication of services. The Collaborative approach has proved to be a smashing success – the group is now comprised of over 40 health and wellness organizations that meet monthly!

During the past five years, RCDC has participated and organized numerous projects to increase community awareness of diabetes, identify

community needs surrounding the disease, and identify the gaps in the area’s diabetes services. The group has developed a free diabetes resource guide for the community, available for download at rchf.org/rcdc. RCDC has also started holding numerous U.S. Diabetes Conversation Map Classes© throughout the City of Riverside and Moreno Valley. The small, medical-professional led classes provide a safe-space for people with diabetes and their caregivers to come together and learn more about how to properly manage the disease. The group has also attended numerous health fairs and diabetes-focused events to spread the word about the Collaborative and its services.

This past November, which is National Diabetes Month, was by far RCDC’s busiest month to date. The group worked with the City of Riverside to light Grier Pavilion at Riverside City Hall in blue, the official color of diabetes, in hope of raising awareness about the disease. Over 614 structures were lit in blue around the world to raise awareness, but Riverside City Hall was just one of five buildings that took part in the effort in California! RCDC also held a booth at Riverside Plaza for World Diabetes Day, and held two seminars, one in Spanish and one in English, at Parkview Community Hospital to address the emotional side of diabetes.

This year we celebrate our 15th birthday as Riverside Community Health Foundation! In the late 1990’s, Riverside Community Hospital converted to a for-profit entity. The conversion created the Riverside Community Health Foundation – we officially began in May of 1997 – and our now $80 million endowment, which we use to further our mission of improving the health and well-being of our community. What sets our Foundation apart from other foundations is that we not only grant to other nonprofits, but we actually operate our own programs like Miles of Smiles Elementary Dental Program that provides education, screenings, and sealants to over 25,000 children in 39 schools and our Teen

Health Services that reach over 10,000 teens annually.

Looking back, it has been an amazing journey. I have found it both exciting and challenging helping to build the Foundation into what it is today. The Foundation has become a central figure in Riverside, addressing some of the most pressing health needs at multiple levels in our community. One of the most important ingredients for our success was creating an environment characterized by open communication and responsiveness to the community’s voice. For us to be successful in reaching the community, it meant creating and sustaining effective programs through visionary ideas, key partnerships, and, most of all, hard work.

Over these past 15 years, the Foundation has made an enormous impact on the overall health of the area by investing over $38 million in grants and programs in the community. This money has helped to facilitate over 750,000 health interventions since we began. What we have learned along the way is that the Foundation has a unique position to help establish and support both the expectations of the community and the roles of nonprofits serving the community. To achieve our successes we have had to develop a unique set of communication, outreach, negotiation, and management skills in order to create change across organizations and sectors, and to establish our many programs that include our community clinics, Health In Motion, Miles of Smiles, Teen Health Services, and health prevention and education programs.

We’ll be celebrating our 15th birthday at our 2012 Annual Celebration “Cruisin’ Under the Stars” – I hope you can join. Thank you for the privilege of promoting your health these past 15 years!

Dan Anderson

We’re always working on new projects and expanding the reach of our programs to better serve the health and well-being of the community. Here’s some of the latest news from the Foundation:

Miles of Smiles Elementary School Dental Program (MOS) has completed its dental fairs and sealant clinics at area schools for the 2011-2012 school year. This past year the program was in 39 elementary schools and we estimate, our MOS staff is still completing statistics, that the program will have provided dental education, screenings, and sealant placement to over 25,000 children!

The Start R.I.G.H.T. (Riverside Is Getting Healthy Together) campaign is a city-wide, healthy-living initiative that the Foundation will be playing a lead role in. Currently, our Director of Health

Education Stephanie Smith is chairing the committee in charge of implementing and overseeing the campaign, which will include a website focused on Eating Right, Moving Right, and Living Right in Riverside and a city-wide healthy-living Challenge that will take place from the months of September to November.

The Board of Directors has approved a $334,120 grant to Borrego Community Health Foundation (Borrego), our current clinic operators. The grant will allow Borrego to increase their patients’ access to x-ray services, by installing x-ray capabilities at the Arlanza Family Health Center, and optometry services, by reopening Arlanza’s vision clinic. Along with providing optometry services, Borrego will use the funds to provide eyeglasses to about 700 low income adults that don’t have access to prescriptive eyewear coverage. These new services will fill two large gaps in health services available to Riverside’s uninsured and underinsured population.

5th Annual “Keeping it Real” Young Men’s Conference Celebrates Riverside’s

Youth

“Just the name, Young Men’s Conference, it’s like we are important,” said 2012 Young Men’s Conference participant Jose Bautista, 20.

This is the exact sentiment the Foundation and its partner the City of Riverside Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department hope to achieve from participants at our Annual “Keeping it Real” Young Men’s Conference, which was held this year on May 10th at the Riverside Convention Center. Life is not easy for young men today. Between lack of employment and educational opportunities, the rise of gang culture, and easy access to drugs, adolescence has become as difficult to navigate as a mine field. The goal of the Conference is to show young men the vital role they play in shaping the community they are a part of, and give them the skills to overcome the obstacles they face.

The Conference, which was named a “best practice” example by the State Office of Family Planning in 2011, is unique in that it gives young men a chance to meet with city officials and law enforcement in a positive environment -- too often these groups meet in conflict situations.

“This Conference is really about being proactive rather than reactive,” said Stephanie Smith, Riverside Community Health Foundation’s Director of Health Education. Smith said the Conference works to bridge a communication gap between young men and the community by allowing city officials and law enforcement to better understand the challenges young men in Riverside are facing. Smith said it also shows young men that they have community support.

“It [the Conference] makes me realize that the choices I make will really impact my future, like going to jail,” Bautista said.

This year’s Conference brought together 205 young men from Riverside Unified and Alvord Unified School districts, mentors from the government, school, and business sectors, and civic leaders. Robert “ODM” Gutierrez, from KGGI, served as Master of Ceremonies, and attendees heard from former NFL linebacker Chris Claiborne and MLB pitcher Troy Percival. Local dignitaries like Mayor Ron Loveridge and Council Members Paul Davis and Andy Melendrez spoke to the young men in attendance as well.

Foundation Receives $1.3 Million to Expand Youth Development Programs Riverside Community Health Foundation is excited to announce that we have been awarded a Personal Responsibility and Education Program (CA PREP) grant by the California Department of Public Health, Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Division! The grant provides over $1.3 million to be used by September 2014 to expand teen health programming in Riverside and the Perris/Mead Valley area. RCHF was one of the two awardees for Riverside County, and one of just 20 awardees state-wide.

“This grant provides us with the opportunity to increase the services provided to Riverside’s most at-risk youth,” said Stephanie Smith Director of Health Education for the Foundation, “while also expanding our programming to some of the highest at-risk youth in the County.”

This will be the first time the Foundation has had the opportunity to expand its youth development services outside of the City of Riverside. The Foundation worked with the Riverside Challenges of Youth Coalition (RCOYC) to identify an area outside of Riverside, a requirement of the grant, which would most benefit from increased youth development programming. The Perris/Mead Valley area was chosen because of high gang activity, high school dropout rate, and teen pregnancy rate. The average teen pregnancy rate in California is 4.4%, but the Perris/Mead Valley area has a teen pregnancy rate of 6%, meaning 60 out of every 1,000 live births are to female youth between the ages of 15 to 19.

Although the Foundation is expanding programming outside of our traditional service area, we remain committed to offering youth development programming in Riverside. The grant will also provide support for Central Riverside, which has been identified as a high-risk area for teen pregnancy.

RCHF will be implementing a research-based curriculum “Reducing the Risk,” which has been shown to reduce risky behaviors in youth, with the funding. Twelve schools in Riverside and the Perris/Mead Valley area have committed to working alongside the Foundation’s Health Educators to execute the curriculum to a minimum of 1,100 youth. The new program will be implemented at the beginning of the 2012 – 2013 school year.

A thank you note to our Miles of Smiles staff from a 1st grade student at Van Buren Elementary.
