1. INTRODUCTION

The PDA Reference Configuration “ActiveSync Edition” supports the operating systems Windows Mobile 5, Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Mobile 6.1 on the following PDA models of the Commission:

• HTC T7272 Touch Pro (Windows Mobile 6.1)

• HTC P3700 Touch Diamond (Windows Mobile 6.1)

• HTC P3650 Touch Cruise (Windows Mobile 6)

• HTC P4350 (Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6)

• HTC P3600 (Windows Mobile 5)

• Qtek S200 (Windows Mobile 5)

Note that a support of Windows Mobile 2003 based PDAs is no longer foreseen, since they do not support the level of security required by the ActiveSync service.

The general deployment method of the RC PDA ActiveSync Edition is the same as with all previous RC PDA versions. Details of the specific procedure to follow for this RC version are described in this document.

2. UPGRADE PROCEDURE

The upgrade of PDAs to the new RC for ActiveSync should be done in the following order.

(1) Manual operations prior to the installation:

(a) check the operating system version of the PDA,

(b) backup the user data,

(c) update the firmware, if possible/required,

(d) carry out a clean boot of the device.

(2) Install the RC (please pay attention to the new naming convention!).

(3) Carry out the manual post-operations.

(4) Change ActiveSync on a user’s PC to “Partnership Mode”.

(5) Carry out a first synchronisation.

Each step is described in detail in the following chapters.

3. MANUAL OPERATIONS PRIOR TO THE INSTALLATION

The following configuration settings could not be implemented in the Reference Configuration and need manual action.

3.1. Check the operating system version

Windows Mobile 5 based PDAs need at least AKU 2.0 for supporting direct push solutions (AKU 2.0 introduces MSFP = Microsoft Security Feature Pack) [1]. It is therefore essential to

Page 5: Rc Pda 3 0 1 Installation Guide

Reference Configuration for PDAs (ActiveSync Edition) - Installation Guide Page 2 / 12 Document Version 1.0 dated 18/03/2009

check the build number of Windows Mobile 5 devices before installing the RC at “Settings”, “System Tab”, “About”.

The build number is in fact the release number followed by the AKU version. Example: If the build number is “Build 14847.2.0.0” then this means that it is AKU 2.0, if it is “Build 14nnn.1.1.0” it would mean it is only AKU1.1.

Note: The RC PDA 3.0 can not be installed on WM5 with an AKU number less than 2.0!

In case the operating system is not at the required AKU level please contact the Central Helpdesk (58181) and open a "request for service" ticket for a "Firmware update for a PDA". This ticket has to be assigned to DIGIT.A.2.DPMS. Don't forget to mention the model and the serial number of the device. The serial number can be found by removing the battery from the device. Once the battery is removed a white patch with text on it shows up, this is where the serial number is located (for HTC: S/N: HTxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or S/N: SZxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).

3.2. Backup user’s data

On existing devices it could be desirable to preserve a user’s data. For backing up the device, just synchronise it with the PC, so that all e-mails, calendar items, contacts and tasks are not lost after the clean boot. Also copy any other data to the memory card (e.g. pictures, music and any other files), so that they are still accessible after the RC installation.

Page 6: Rc Pda 3 0 1 Installation Guide

3.3. Copy installation files to the PDA

To install the RC, you need to have the installation folder available on the PDA’s internal memory. Download the “RC PDA 3.0.1 Edition” provided on the DigitLine page for the RC PDA. In most cases you now just need to copy the installation folder to the SD card or microSD card provided with the PDA. This is however not possible with the HTC P3700 (Touch Diamond), since it has only built-in memory and doesn’t come with a removable storage card.

For the HTC P3700 you have to copy the installation folder to the “internal storage”. To do so, connect the PDA to the PC and tap the “Disk Drive” radio button, since this allows for faster copying. The PDA will be recognized by the operating system as a USB mass storage device, and you will find the PDA’s internal memory in “My Computer” as a removable disk.

Now just copy the files to the internal memory. Note that the drive letter can vary, depending on the PC’s configuration.

3.4. Clean boot of the PDA

To carry out the clean boot of the device, go to “Start” – “Settings” – tab “System”, tap on “Clear Storage”, enter “1234” and tap “YES”.

Attention: All personal data and personal adjustments will be lost!!!

Page 7: Rc Pda 3 0 1 Installation Guide

The device will reboot now, followed by a clean installation. Please allow the customisation (the manufacturer’s software installation) after the clean boot.

4. INSTALLATION OF THE REFERENCE CONFIGURATION

4.1. Autorun

To install the RC, simply insert the SD card with copied folder “2577” to the device – the installation will start automatically.

On the HTC P3700 the installation process needs to be started manually. After copying of the installation folder to the “Internal Storage”(see above chapter 3.3) disconnect it from the PC. Launch the “File Explorer” on the PDA, and tap “Autorun.exe” in the “2577” folder located in “Internal Storage” under “My Device”.

A security warning will be displayed (“The program is from an unknown publisher. … Do you want to continue?”). Please confirm and tap “Yes”.

Autorun will ask: “Do you want to install the Reference Configuration for PDA?”, confirm by tapping “Yes”.

4.2. Name of the PDA

The name of device has to comply with the Active Directory naming convention for computers, the same that is also used for any desktops or laptops [2]. Therefore please ensure that the device name is set according to the following definition:

MTTIIYYNNNNN • the prefix M indicates the computer type (= Mobile device), • TTIIYYNNNNN represents a condensed version of the inventory code (11 characters):

– TT is the type of equipment (2 digits), – II is the inventory management centre (2 characters), – YY is the year (2 digits), – NNNNN is the inventory number (5 digits),

Example: “M02DI0805905”.

When asked tap “Ok”. Allow for one restart for devices with WM 6 and higher, for the devices with older operating system allow for two restarts.

Please note: After the installation it can happen (if the device connects to GPRS) that the device will try to synchronise via GPRS. Please do not synchronise the device at this moment!

5. POST RC INSTALLATION MANUAL OPERATIONS

Certain PDA models come with different preinstalled programs (e.g. the HTC Touch Cruise with TomTom). Please uninstall the software manually if asked for it.

5.1. Backlight times

You can adjust the backlight at any time. On the HTC TouchPro and the HTC Touch Diamond do the following:

Click “Start” – select “Settings” – choose “System card”– click icon “Power” – choose “Advanced card”. Here you can adjust different timings.

Page 8: Rc Pda 3 0 1 Installation Guide

For any other model do the following:

Click “Start” – select “Settings” – choose “System card” – click icon “Backlight” – choose “Battery Power card” or “External Power card” to adjust a different timing.

For example:

and

5.2. Disable the "Help Make Windows Mobile better!" popup

In WM 6.0 or later you may experience a popup asking to "Help Make Windows Mobile better!". It is not entirely possible to suppress this popup automatically, it needs an additional manual configuration change.

Please do the following: Open “Start” – “Settings” – tab “System” – “Customer Feedback”, tap radio button “Don’t Send Feedback” and tap “ok”.

Page 9: Rc Pda 3 0 1 Installation Guide

Reference Configuration for PDAs (ActiveSync Edition) - Installation Guide Page 6 / 12 Document Version 1.0 dated 18/03/2009

From now on the popup will not appear any more.

5.3. Configure Pocket Outlook to force the synchronisation of “Sent Items”

The synchronisation of “Sent Items” in Pocket Outlook requires a manual configuration change.

Please do the following: In “Programs” – “Mail” – “Menu” – “Tools” – “Manage Folders” check the box next to “Sent Items”.

5.4. Uncheck “Ask about connection type when I connect” (HTC Touch Pro and HTC Touch Diamond)

Every time the PDA is connected via USB users are asked if they want to connect the PDA’s memory card like a memory stick or the PDA device as an ActiveSync client. An automated unchecking of the setting "Ask about connection type when I connect" is not possible, this needs to be configured manually.

Page 10: Rc Pda 3 0 1 Installation Guide

Please do the following: Open “Start” – “Settings” – tab “Connections” – “USB to PC”, check radio button “ActiveSync (Sync with Outlook)”, uncheck box “Ask about connection type when I connect”.

5.5. Install the hotfix to enhance WAP security (HTC Touch Pro)

An automated installation of this important security hotfix is not possible. It is therefore provided for manual installation.

Please do the following: Open “Start” – “File Explorer”, select “My Device”, open folder “Post_RC” , click “Touch pro WAP enhance“. The hotfix will now be installed to the device.

5.6. Remove the installation folder

After installation, there is still a folder remaining in “My Device” which is used only for RC installation purposes. As it is impossible to remove the folder automatically, please remove the folder manually after the RC installation.

Page 11: Rc Pda 3 0 1 Installation Guide

Please do the following: Open “Start” – “File Explorer”, select “My Device”, delete the folder “UpdateSys” and confirm folder delete by tapping “Yes”.

If there are any read only files, you will see the dialog “Confirm File Delete”. Please tap on the “Yes to All” button.

5.7. Install the Microsoft Office Mobile 6.1 update (WM5 and WM6)

A silent installation of the Office Mobile 6.1 update1 is not possible. It is therefore provided for manual installation.

Please do the following: Open “Start” – “File Explorer”, select “My Device”, open folder “Post_RC”, click “Office_wpc_WM5” (in case of a Windows Mobile 5 device) or “Office_wpc_WM6” (in case of a Windows Mobile 6 device), choose a location to install (usually to the device), finally tap “Install”.

The Office 6.1 update will be installed to the device. You will be asked to restart the device, please tap “Ok”.

5.8. Install FlashLite 3.1

The latest FlashLite version 3.1 is not available for download. In case of problems with the display of flash contents the ageing Flash Player 7 for PocketPC is provided for optional manual installation. There is a slight chance that it helps to overcome such issues.

In such cases please do the following: Open “Start” – “File Explorer”, select “My Device”, open folder “Post_RC”, click “fp7_ppc_en”, choose a location to install (usually to the device) and tap “Install”.

The Flash Player 7 will be installed to the device. To finish the installation, tap “ok”.

1 Office Mobile 6.1 is an upgrade of Office Mobile applications on Windows Mobile 5 and 6 to support the

new Office 2007 file formats (it is already included in Windows Mobile 6.1).

5.9. Finish the manual operations

Now you can remove the folder “Post_RC” as well. Please do the following: Open “Start” – “File Explorer”, select “My Device”, delete the folder “Post_RC”, confirm folder delete by tapping “Yes”.

If there are any read only files, you will see the dialog “Confirm File Delete”. Please tap the “Yes to All” button.

6. CHANGE ACTIVESYNC ON A USER’S PC TO “PARTNERSHIP MODE”

With the RC ActiveSync Edition you will need to have the “Partnership Mode” in ActiveSync on the PC turned on, in order to synchronise the PDA with the Exchange server.

To do so you can download and install the updated ActiveSync 4.5 package from DigitLine (script label “MASC4532b”), or just modify the following registry key in case ActiveSync 4.5 is already installed: [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services] "GuestOnly"=dword:00000000

You find the script and further information on the DigitLine PDA synchronisation page.

7. FIRST SYNCHRONISATION

The RC installation is finished when the first synchronisation is done. The description of the first synchronisation given here is limited to the essentials. For a more detailed description please consult the document “ActiveSync Synchronisation Guide” published on the DigitLine PDA synchronisation page.

We recommend LSAs to do this first synchronisation via the PC connection at the user’s own office PC. For this you will need:

• the PC with ActiveSync 4.5 (in partnership mode, see chapter 6),

Page 13: Rc Pda 3 0 1 Installation Guide

Reference Configuration for PDAs (ActiveSync Edition) - Installation Guide Page 10 / 12 Document Version 1.0 dated 18/03/2009

• the PDA’s USB cable (or cradle),

• the user’s credentials.

This is the procedure to follow:

Before connecting the PDA to the PC you need to configure the synchronisation server on the PDA2. Tap “Menu” – “Configure Server”. You do not have to enter the e-mail address, tap “Next”. The correct server address is preconfigured (“activesync.ec.europa.eu”), tap “Next”. Type the user’s logon name to the field next to “User name:”. Enter the user password, the domain is already preconfigured (“Net1”), be sure that the checkbox next to “Save password” is checked (enabling future automatic synchronisation), tap “Next”. Check the desired folders to synchronise (“Contacts”, “Calendar”, “E-mail”, “Tasks”). Tap “Finish”.

If you are using different folders to store the incoming mail, you will need to check these folders for synchronisation. You can still do this after the first synchronisation.

Now you can connect the device to the user’s office PC.

The window “Synchronization Setup Wizard” will popup on the PC’s screen. Check the desired items to be synchronised (it will have imported already what has been configured before on the PDA) and the source (for “Contacts”, “Calendar”, “E-mail”, “Tasks” it should remain “Exchange Server”). You can also check / uncheck item “Notes” and “Favorites” (these are synchronised solely with PC). Click “Next”, check box “Allow wireless data connections” shall stay unchecked, and click “Next”, then “Finish”.

Now ActiveSync will start with the first synchronisation.

The ActiveSync security policies will popup a window on the PDA, tap “OK”. After this, the owner information will be displayed. Tap once on the screen to make this owner info disappear. You will be requested to renew your password settings, tap “OK”. Enter the desired PIN (4 numeric characters) to the boxes next to “Password:” and “confirm:”. Optionally you can enter a password hint in the tab “Hint”. Tap “ok”.

After this the actual synchronisation is executed.

The ActiveSync window on the PC screen will finally show the status “Connected” and “Synchronized”. The installation of the RC PDA is successfully finished.

Now you can check different folders for synchronisation. To do so, follow these steps: Click “Start” – select “Mail” – click “Menu” – select “Tools” – select “Manage Folders”. Now you can click on the + sign on the left of the Inbox folder and check all folders you would like to synchronise. The folder “Sent Items” should be already checked.

The device is now ready for use.
