How to pay in your money

4

Whether your cash is from wages or pocket money, you’ll want to keep it safe. That’s the whole

point of your account.

How to let someone pay money in on your behalf. To do this you would need to provide the payee with your sort code and account number

so they can pay money into your account.

You can also pay cheques or cash into your account in a number of ways:

When you make a deposit, you may need to complete a pre-printed paying-in slip. They’re

straightforward to complete and act as a record for you and us. If you’re doing this for the first

time and need some help, just ask a member of staff at your branch.

To find your local branch go to rbs.co.uk/branch-locator

1 Cash and Deposit Machines (CDMs)

To help make it easier to bank with us, we’ve put Cash and Deposit Machines into certain

branches. They’re as simple to use as a normal cash machine – just follow the on-screen

prompts or ask one of our team to show you how.

Pay in cash – (up to 50 bank notes) in a single transaction

Get an ‘image receipt’ – an accurate record of your transaction with an image of each cheque

or pay-in slip you deposit and a detailed breakdown of the deposit

2 At a branch

If you have cash to pay in, it might be easier to come into a branch. You can pay in cash or

cheques at any RBS branch.

that’s it done

Our branches are normally open Monday to Friday, 9.15am to 4.45pm (9.45am on Wednesday).

Many of our branches have extended opening hours during the week and open on Saturday from

9.30am to 1pm. Please log on to rbs.co.uk/branch-locator to check details of your local branch.

When will my money be available?

If you’ve paid cash into your account:

As long as you paid it in at an RBS branch before 3.30pm on a working weekday, you should be

able to withdraw your money from a cash machine or spend it using your card on the next day.

If you’ve paid cheques into your account:

Cheques have to be cleared before you can spend the money. This just means we have to get the

payment from the account of the person who wrote the cheque. How long this takes can vary

– but as a general guide, look at the table below (if you paid in at a cash machine, you should

allow an extra day for processing).

You should allow at least four working days before you use the money from a cheque paid in.

Sometimes, because cheques may come back unpaid after this time, it may take up to five

working days for a cheque to clear.

Earn interest on your moneyThe cash you put into your account immediately starts earning you interest every day.

It’s added to your account for you to keep every month.

For details of our current interest rates, have a look in any of our branches or read our leaflet

‘Personal & Private Current Account Fees & Interest Rates’.

How exactly does interest work?

Interest is the money we pay you for keeping your money in your RBS account.

It is worked out as a percentage of the money you have in your account – so the more money you

have (and the longer you keep it in you account), the more interest you get.

We pay interest on cash immediately, and on cheques from the third working day. For example,

if you pay a cheque in on Monday, we will pay you interest from Wednesday.

Interest you receive

Credit Interest is earned on cleared money in your account. Interest is calculated on a daily

basis and paid into your account once a month.

We’ll pay you ‘net’ interest every month (having taken off income tax at the going rate).

If you do not pay tax, you should either:

‘Net’ is the interest rate paid after the deduction of tax.

Important

Always check there’s enough in your account to cover the amount you want before you

try to take out cash.

If you use a NatWest or RBS cash machine, just follow the straightforward on screen instructions

and you should be able to carry out the following using your Visa Debit card and PIN:

– Change your PIN number

– Top-up your pay-as-you-go mobile phone

– Pay in cash and cheques, and pay bills at our cash machines

9

How to use a cash machine Using cash machines is easy – and they do much more than just give out cash.

What’s a PIN?

Each time you insert your Visa Debit card into the cash machine, the first thing the screen

will ask you to do is type in your PIN. PIN means Personal Identification Number.

You will have been given one when you were sent your Visa Debit card. This four number

code allows you to use your Visa Debit card to withdraw money from cash machines.

Because no one else knows your PIN, no one else can withdraw money from your account.

So never tell anyone your PIN!

To find your nearest cash machine go to rbs.co.uk/cashmachines

Cash Withdrawal tipsStep 1 – Insert your card in the direction shown on the screen

happens, you’ll need to speak to your branch

Step 2 – Now enter your PIN

three times, your card will be held in the cash machine and you will not be able to use it.

Please contact your branch if this happens

Yes – but it must be to another four number code. You can change it at any RBS or NatWest

cash machine at any time. Select ‘Account services’ from the ‘Please select a service’

screen and then follow the simple on-screen instructions

Step 3 – Now choose how much money you want

choose the ‘Withdraw cash with receipt’ option

in exactly the sum you want, subject to your daily limit and enough money is in your

account. Always check you’ve keyed in the right amount and not added on an extra zero!

Top-up your mobileRBS Revolve customers can top-up their pre-pay mobile phones at any of our cash machines.

It’s quick, convenient and, above all, secure. It’s also very easy. There’s no registration process and

the whole thing takes less than a minute. But make sure you have enough money in your account

before you start.

Just follow these five easy steps:

Step 1 – Insert your card as usual in the cash machine and enter your PIN

Step 2 – Select ‘Mobile phone top-up’ from the menu

Step 3 – Select which phone network you belong to

Step 4 – Choose the amount you wish to top-up your phone with

Step 5 – Enter your mobile phone number on the keypad and confirm. You will be asked to enter

your mobile number for a second time, this is to make sure you have keyed it in correctly.

Once you have completed the steps and as long as you have enough money in your account, the

top-up will be instant.

12

Spending your cashYou can use your Visa Debit card to pay for small everyday essentials as well as larger more

expensive items.

Before you hit the shops

Sign the back of your card as soon as you receive it. It’s also a good idea to visit a cash machine

and check your balance. (The ‘How to use a cash machine’ section on page 9 explains what to do.)

But remember that very recent deposits or withdrawals might not yet show up on your balance.

If you try to spend more money than you’ve got in your account, the shop has to reject your card.

When you’re in the shop

1) Give the shop assistant your card when you want to pay for something

2) The assistant may pass your card through the machine or ask you to place it on the

card reader

3) You will then be asked to key in your 4-digit PIN into a special keypad

4) Check the amount carefully before you key in your PIN

5) The PIN you entered will be checked for approval. This is done so only you can use

your Visa Debit card to pay for things. The amount will be deducted from your account.

Allow a few days for the transaction to show up on your statement

It’s a good idea to always keep your receipt, so you know what you have spent.

90192611.indd 14 09/07/2012 16:15

13

Spending abroadWhen you’re abroad you can use your Visa Debit card to pay for things and withdraw cash where you see the Visa sign.

How much money can I take out at a cash machine?

With RBS Revolve, you can withdraw up to £250 per day at a cash machine, but obviously not

if you have less than this in your account. It’s a good idea to always leave some money in your

account just to be on the safe side.

It’s important to know that when you use your card abroad, certain charges will apply.

For full details, please ask your local branch for a copy of Personal & Private Current Account

Fees & Interest Rates.

Text Alerts for your mobile Would you like to know when your weekly cash has reached your account or

when you have enough money to buy that computer game you’ve been saving

up for? Well now you can.

With RBS, you can get free text alerts sent straight to your mobile phone –

helping you keep track of your bank account. There are two great services you

can choose to receive:

Balance updates – we’ll send your account balance (from the previous day) to

your mobile phone once a week, on a day and time that suits you. You could for

instance receive an update each Friday, so that you know how much you have to spend over

the weekend.

Limit alerts – a text when your account hits limits set by you. Why not use these to confirm

when you’ve been paid?

It’s really easy to register – go to rbs.co.uk/mobile for details.

may charge you for receiving a text alert from us or for sending a mobile text message to us.

If you are receiving or sending mobile text messages whilst overseas, network overseas charges

may apply. You should check with your network operator for details.

Clearing, as in ‘clearing a cheque’

The process of turning a cheque into

actual money in your account.

When you pay in a cheque, the bank has

to get the money from the account of

whoever wrote the cheque and transfer

it to your account.

Jargon busterAccount payee

The words that ‘cross’ a cheque.

They protect against fraud by only

allowing the cheque to be paid into

the account of the person or business

spelt out on the top line of the cheque.

Bank charges

Fees that a bank may charge for certain

services, like cashing cheques and

overdrawn accounts.

Banker’s draft

A special type of cheque provided by

RBS that guarantees payment to the

person whose name is on it. We’ll check

that you have sufficient funds in your

account before we issue a banker’s draft

on your behalf and we will then debit

the funds from your account.

Credit balance

The amount of money you currently

have in your account.

Chip and PIN

Chip and PIN helps safeguard you against

fraud. You will be asked to place your card

in a card reader and key in your 4-digit

PIN into a special keypad.

account, so the more money you have in

your account – and the longer you keep it

An amount of money – such as interest

you’ve earned on your money – before tax

is deducted from it (see also ‘net’ below).
