Council Communication By Carolyn Bye, Council Vice President

The congregational meet-ing to approve the budget is scheduled for June 13, 2010 following the 10:30 a.m. service so we should be ready to go by Noon. Please plan to attend so that a quorum is available to pass our budget for 2010-2011. We also held a “Budget Information” meeting on May 26, so that everyone could have an early look at the proposed budget, ask questions, give thoughts or recommendations. It is looking like there will be less revenues available to support church and minis-try operations, so we will be looking at creative ways to continue to pay ex-penses and meet our oper-ating costs. At Cross of Hope, we have been very blessed not to have encountered the eco-nomic downturn in our revenues prior to this time. Those of us on the Council believe that is because God is faithful to our members and His church. While some may be very stressed about making commit-ments for a year, we be-lieve that most members will be able to “jump in” with a few dollars “as needed” when we must

make purchases for sup-plies and ministry needs. While this is a bit of a scary way for the Council to operate the budget, we have faith that God knows what we need and that He will be with each member and together we will continue opera-tions as needed. Our school and pre-school are doing well in supporting themselves and will continue to provide funds to the church as part of the budgetary cost-share. That is a tremendous blessing to all of us! With our schools as “Centers of Excellence” we are ministering to nearly 200 children who are becoming strong disciples for Christ! If you haven’t been to a school chapel on Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m., mark your calen-dar now to attend at least once a month when school starts again--you will be glad you did as it really does the heart--and your faith!--good! When God is with us, who can be against us! Rejoice in this day.

God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing. Ephesians 2:10 (The Message)

Title: “You Are Mine”

RAYS OF HOPE June 2010

Continued pg. 9

“You are mine. No one can take you away from me. My Father gave you to me. You are mine.” What amazing words. What a beau-tiful thought for someone to say. How special that person must have felt when they heard those words. These words got me thinking. We’ll get back to that in a minute though.

Jesus is here in John chapter 10 in Jerusa-lem around the time of Hanukkah. He is walking through the temple, probably minding his own business, and people

start to surround Him asking questions and wanting proof that He is the Messiah. And they want it “plainly”, in layman’s terms. Jesus says to them, “I have already told you but you just don’t believe me.” And why don’t these people believe Him? Jesus tells them they don’t believe Him be-cause they are not His sheep. His sheep know Him, believe Him and follow Him.

Are there any CSI, Law & Order, NCIS or any other crime TV fans here today? These shows can be very ad-dictive. They show a crime, usually a murder, and how the investiga-tors solve the case. Of course they need proof. And they need it be-yond a reasonable doubt for a conviction. Some-times proof comes tied up in a pretty little package, sometimes they need to dig deep for that one shred of proof. They even have some very cool equip-ment to help them solve these crimes. Proof is important. Proof makes the case and allows eve-ryone to be satisfied with the outcome, well almost everyone. So let’s get back to Jesus and those in the temple asking him for proof.

We like proof. Not nec-essarily from Jesus but we do ask for proof in many different areas. We want proof in crimes, proof in our ac-complishments, proof in ourselves. Without proof there is doubt. These people will not believe Jesus as the Messiah if there is no proof given. They are looking to kill him. “Blasphemy” they shout. I took this a little far-ther into the text on to verse 33. They do not believe Him and accuse Him of blasphemy. So what does He have to do? Does He need to perform a miracle right then and there? Telling them is not enough. Seeing is believing.

Let’s all take a walk down our own private memory lane and faith journey. There were probably a couple of stumbling blocks for us, faith hiccups as I like to call them. Even as His sheep, we have mo-ments that we may question faith and maybe want some proof. Something that is tangible. Something we can see, touch, feel. But faith is belief with-out proof. I decided to look up the definition of faith. Here are some examples:

1. Confidence or trust in a person or thing,

2. Belief that is not based on proof

3. The trust in God and in His prom-ises as made through Christ and the Scriptures by which humans are justified or saved.

There are more but I thought these three were going along the same track I was on.

Over the past week or so K-LOVE has been doing their annual fund drive. It is driving me nuts! I love hearing the music but all the talk about money can get to be too much sometimes. They have said it takes about $40 for each hour of music played. I love KLOVE and the music they play. I listen quite a bit when I’m in the car. They talk a lot about “stepping out in faith”. Sometimes I hear this term from you all as well. We probably will hear it quite a bit over the next few weeks as we wind up our annual stewardship drive here at Cross of Hope.

Stepping out in faith is such a strong term. It means that we are tak-ing our life or situation, placing it at the feet of Jesus and allowing Him to work through us to glorify God. We are giving it up, not holding

As a Senior of Rio Rancho High, I had the oppor-tunity to compete on a National level in a Mar-

keting and Business Man-agement Program (DECA). It was a once in a lifetime experience that I will con-tinue to value and use the experience for the rest of my life.

Heading into College at CNM will present many new and exciting chal-lenges for me to overcome and learn from with the Lord as my guide.

Since I have always been intrigued with cooking and creating my own recipes, the field of Culi-nary Arts is a natural lure for me.

To all whose love supported and helped me along the way I owe all of my success. Many thanks to you!

Leigh Anne Cooper graduated from Rio Rancho High School with honors. This summer she will be working at a Horse Camp in Corrales. She is looking forward to attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins where she will be majoring in Equine Sciences.

Nicholas Barton Snyder was born on August 13, 1991 in Denver, Colorado. From that point on he was always a happy little child with a great imagination. His favorite thing when he was lit-tle was dinosaurs. He would always pretend he was a t-rex. As he grew older, he became more interested in cars and sports. He played base-ball and football during 5th and 6th grade. Also during this time he developed his musical abilities which started with a trombone and grew into the guitar. Throughout his high school ca-reer he has grown into a very caring, honest, and strong willed young man. He’ll be going to college to study accounting at New Mexico State University in the fall. His mother, father, and sister are all very proud of him. He would also like to thank the church for all the love and support they have given him to help prepare him in his trials ahead.

I’ve been gone for a while. In my mind it seems like a short period of time, but really it hasn’t been – several years at least. I faded into the background as much as I could at church and did my best to hide from God. I know the last part sounds silly, hiding from God, but I was relatively success-ful at it. He never left me, but I took a huge step backward and lim-ited my time with Him. And things changed.

I am an introvert at heart and am most com-fortable by myself, or spending time with my family. I remember thinking when I joined Cross of Hope this church is large enough that I won’t be noticed, and that’s ok. But things didn’t work out as I thought they would. Cross of Hope, and God, found me.

My first surprise came when Pastor Dale called me by name. After

growing up in a Catho-lic Church with thou-sands of members I was caught totally off guard by this. I joined the New Member’s Class, Koinonia, and started attending Sunday School. I barely talked at all, but I really liked what I saw. A wonder-ful group Christians liv-ing out their faith. Ser-mons that spoke di-rectly to me. And the God that I always knew was out there came alive.

It started small at first as I suppose these things usually do. I overcame my nervous-ness and spoke up. I asked a question. I shared my thoughts. And things began to change. I purchased a Bible with wonderful comments and began to read. I started attending church every Sunday and saw what I was reading come alive. Try-ing to learn how I was to live out my faith be-came a passion and I began taking baby steps forward.

I began to understand that sitting still wasn’t ok. Life is too short not to something good for

The Absent Christian someone else, but this meant stepping outside of my comfort zone and I was terrified. I moved forward slowly at first and each time I did my trust and faith in God grew a little bit stronger. I can look back now and identify all of God’s work in my life clearly. After living “on my own” for so long and not succeeding at becoming a better per-son I know without any uncertainty that God has been at work. All of the good that has oc-curred in all parts of my life since I joined Cross of Hope has been God working through me.

Still, the fear of doing something new terrifies me so much that it drives me to pray. While I know this is a good thing and God has used this to help me grow as a Christian, I became overwhelmed. I am not a natural born leader and yet I found myself in leadership po-sitions.

There have been failures as well, too numerous to count. Times I didn’t follow though and dropped the ball. Some-one I should have called, something I should have done. I became tired and burned out. While

my faith sustained me through my Mom’s 4-year battle with lung cancer and my Dad’s declining health, after they died I retreated. I stopped going to Sun-day School and my church attendance be-came intermittent. Since so much of my spiritual growth oc-curred when God pulled me out of my comfort zone I backed away from him as well. I became a different person.

I have learned a num-ber of things that I’d like to share with you, if you don’t mind. Per-haps you have had a similar experience at one time in your life, too.

As I decreased my time with God and church attendance declined it became harder to do the “right thing” in many situations. I tried not to but I gos-siped more and be-came more impatient with strangers. It was harder to see the good in others and find ways of being nice to them. I accomplished less and procrasti-nated more. It became harder to forgive my-

It has been said that children are living messages we send to a time and

place we will never see. The greatest teacher of all time, Jesus of Naz-areth, said that the Kingdom of Heaven be-longed to the youngest and littlest of learn-ers...the most helpless and powerless of per-sons. Could this be be-cause children are stu-dents of the spirit? Per-haps it is ‘knowing’ not knowledge that is the key.

Father, our nation’s children are in peril and the blame has been squarely placed on

every school’s doorstep. Yet it takes a village to raise a child. Help us to gather the children we know beneath our wings. Teach us all to mentor them as you mentor us through Your Word.

Lord, our chil-dren need experi-ence not just instruc-tion. They need charac-ter as well as knowl-edge. Help us to show

“Eternal God, Maker of all things, Lover of all Souls” Prayed on National Day of Prayer by Sharon Halstead, Cross of Hope School Principal

them how to balance self-assurance with lis-tening and helping oth-ers, and lead us through the lessons of history so

that we may im-part an under-standing and appre-ciation for the past while kin-dling hope for a brighter tomorrow. Guide us to show them the value of lifelong learning

and help us mentor love, encouragement and un-derstanding so they will practice loving kindness

and peace throughout their lives. Teach us how to encourage chil-dren to set goals and high standards for themselves as well as instill within them the importance of self con-trol and discipline.

Father, you are the crea-tor of an extraordinary universe and there are no ordinary children are there? Please bless our homes, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities that they may be lively centers for sound learning, new discovery, and the pur-suit of wisdom. Grant that those who teach and those who learn may find you to be the source of all truth.

AMEN

self when I messed up. And, as hard as I tried to be a better person change just didn’t come. I’ve re-learned the im-portance of reading my Bible and praying every day. It is the best way for me to find the strength and direction to live out the day a lit-

tle closer to the way Je-sus would. And it’s dur-ing that time that I hear God’s still, small voice most clearly.

So, I’m turning around and taking baby steps back. It’s a good place to be but I’m still un-sure as to how I will do. Letting God pull me out

of my comfort zone is good, but I am hoping He will teach me how to trust him more in the future so I don’t make the same mistakes again. I think I missed that the first time around. But most of all, I’ve learned that my life is much easier and more fulfilling living with God, than without Him.

Page 9 it back. We are releas-ing all of our precon-ceived ideas and letting God take over. We are not to touch it again until we hear that clear and concise voice of God telling us our next step. Now this is hard for me. Many of you know I am a control freak. I can pray to God to take this burden but then I continue to think about it, continue to try to fix it, continue to control it. I am not al-lowing God to take this for me and use it to teach me or for the greater good. I am say-ing, “Please Lord, help me understand this situation. Take it from me Father.” And then I am going back in about 20 to 30 microseconds and saying, “Never mind. I’m going to worry and fret and make myself crazier over this. I just don’t trust that you will take care of it the correct way, so I’ll just do it myself.” WOW! That’s terrible! If I love my God, if I believe in my God, if I trust my God, then why am I doing this? So here is where I, as one of Jesus’ sheep, wander. And this is where I am surprised He is still standing there waiting for me when I’m done- open arms and everything,

just waiting patiently for me to remember my trust, my belief and my love. So stepping out in faith is hard for many of us. Now I will admit that some things I am able to leave to God and allow him to work on it, but some things I just can’t. It’s not even about the importance of the situa-tion, it is about just the control of the situation that matters to me. As I look out at you today and all that we have been through over the past few years, I want us all to step out in faith. I want us to stand united and to take that step, or leap if you prefer, all together. I want us to prove to ourselves that we are worthy of being the sheep, that we know His voice, that we trust in Him to do what we need done in this church and this com-munity. As you fill out your spiritual gifts forms and your stew-ardship forms, join me in stepping out in faith. Allow God to lead you to where you are to be in our community. And most importantly, listen to Him. Don’t deny that voice when you know it is Him. An-swer the call. I want you to listen to

this song. It is by The Sidewalk Prophets and it is called “You Can Have Me”. Listen to the lyrics. Try to make this your mantra these next couple of weeks. Allow God into your heart and your lives. Let yourself go. You Can Have Me

If I saw You on the street And You said come and fol-low me, But I had to give up everything, All I once held dear and all of my dreams, Would I love You enough to let go, Or would my love run dry ,When You asked for my life CHORUS When did love become un-moving? When did love be-come unconsuming? Forget-ting what the world has told me, Father of love, You can have me, You can have me , If You’re all You claim to be, Then I’m not losing anything So I will crawl upon my knees, Just to know the joy of suffering, I will love You enough to let go Lord, I give you my life I give you my life Chorus I want to be where You are I’m running into Your arms And I will never look back, So Jesus, here is my heart When did love become un-moving? When did love be-come unconsuming?Forgetting what the world has told me Father of love, You can have me You can have me © Ingram, Frey, McDon-

God will not allow us to fail. He loves us and He takes care of us. If we are doing what is His

will and we are follow-ing His voice and we are trusting Him to lead us through every storm and every triumph, then let’s take that leap to-gether. Let us all hold each other up in prayer and stand as one for what God has called Cross of Hope to be. Remember the scripture “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!” Not just a few things, but ALL things. We can move forward as His sheep. We can trust in Him. We have all the proof we need that He is there, that He is our God, that He is to be glorified. So now let’s visit those first words I spoke to-day- “You are mine. No one can take you away from me. My Father gave you to me. You are mine.” Allow His voice to speak to you. Allow Him to take control of your life. Allow Him to be the Lord of all. He gives us proof every day of who He is. We do not doubt. We will have eternal life in Him because we are His sheep, because we be-lieve, because we love, because we know.

Are you familiar with how God works in the world to bring about His Kingdom? He does this by working through ordinary people like you and me. How? By empowering us to use the gifts he has given each one of us.

But for many, they are a gift given by God that has never been opened.

There are many ways to discover the gifts God has given you. When we begin to live the way God intended, using the gifts he has given us, our life will be filled with joy. So, how do you dis-cover your spiritual gifts? First, listen to your heart. What things strike a cord with you?

What do you feel called to do? Then pray about it and talk to a Chris-tian friend.

Finally, get your feet wet and try it out. Cross of Hope is an excellent place to start. We have ministries in just about every area. A list of the ministries can be found on the Spiritual Gifts

form in the fellowship hall. Pick one and see what happens. If you’ve found the right one you will love doing what you are doing.

Still a little hesitant to begin? That’s ok. Cross of Hope will be offering classes soon to help you discover your Spiritual Gifts. Check out the website and watch the bulletin. Or just call the office and ask to be put on a list to be notified once they begin. Just make sure you don’t miss out doing your part to bring God’s Kingdom a little closer.

Spiritual Gifts—The Gift that

National Day of Prayer— A

Journey Of Faith

It was just a glimmer of a thought last fall when the Prayer Ini-tiative Group talked about the National Day of Prayer. We thought we would have some of our Cross of Hope broth-ers and sisters gather to offer praise and thanksgiving for our leaders, as well as our petitions that God would live in each offi-cial’s heart as they make decisions our cities, states and coun-try.

That glimmer became a great testimony to the power of prayer. Only God could have orchestrated a pro-gram like the one on the morning of May 6. There were eighty people in the sanctu-ary to listen to our speakers. The lineup, in our opinion, was as “good as it gets” (but God may prove us wrong).

Pastor Dale served as the host for the morn-ing, introducing Mayor Richard Berry; State Senator, Sander Rue; City Counselor,

Dan Lewis; the station manager for KKIM/KARS Christian radio, Pastor Dewey Moede; and our very own elementary school principal, Sharon Halstead. The one point their talk had in common was that they each de-pended on their own prayers and the prayers of others as they go about their daily tasks. Pastor Dewey told us about Bishop Shalamat Khok-hara, Pakistani Missionary to the United States. He gave us much to think about. Sharon led us all in a beautiful prayer for our schools and educators. Af-terwards, the attendees were able to talk to our officials, sharing their thoughts and prayers. As they enjoyed refreshments. It was indeed a wonderful Spirit-filled morning.

Overall, Albuquerque had 50 different events - quite an increase from the 2 last year. The average atten-dance at the events was 53 people, so we praise God for our healthy number. Next year? We are already talking about it and have ideas. Do you have some thoughts? If so, please email the church office, or call Kay Hendrickson, 850-8795 / 792-2180.

Attention all teenagers! Did you know that if you start saving money now, it is highly likely that you will become a millionaire? Of course, you will have to resist the constant temptation to buy lots of stuff in order for this to happen. Society tells us that we are defined by what we have, and subsequently by what we don’t have. As a Christian, you know that this is NOT TRUE! If you want to learn how to put into

their own careers that goes above and beyond the state requirements for teacher education.

We would like to thank and recognize them for taking the first step in pursuit of

practice the concepts of saving money, not get-ting into debt, making wise purchases (including never hav-ing a car payment), and giving as an act of wor-ship, come to Dave Ramsey’s Generation Change. We will meet for 4 Sundays beginning July 11th and ending on August 1st. We are in the

process of choosing between two time frames: between the 8:30 and 10:30 services,

or after the 10:30 ser-vice. The class needs at least 1 hour, so if you are a 10:30 at-tendee,

more than likely you would be a little late. Please give your feed-back to Richard Hielkema, 897-0047,

[email protected] or the Perrys, 550-8932, [email protected], so we can determine which time is most popular. The student journals need to be ordered, so we need to know if you are interested in the class a.s.a.p.! Questions can be answered by calling Doug or TJ Perry. Don’t miss this opportunity to change your financial future!

degree. Cross of Hope is truly blessed to have these talented and hard-working individuals on our staff.
