On 16 July 2011, Brightonites paid a visit to the Old Age Home - ‘Vriddha-Ashram’ situated in Shyam Nagar. The entire idea was to pay respect to the elderly and thank them of their contribution to the society. All the students pitched in with whatever little contribution they can make in terms of items of daily needs. Students also performed a group song in their glowing tribute to the elderly. Accompanying students were our teachers, and following is a small account of the visit from our English Faculty Mrs. Vijetri Bhati;

The green earth is a gift to us,and caring for it is a must.

I can’t dream of a clean environment, for that is our main requirement.

There is smoke, pollution and dirt, seeing this also, no one is hurt.

People are cutting trees anddisturbing the ecology.

That also without realizationor any kind of apology.

Cars, buses and scootersthey are the main smoke shooters.

The factories and chimneys are even pouring and giving out smoke as if there is fine flare.Isn’t there any solution for all these kind of pollution anywhere

The other day when I won the first prize in handwriting competition, everyone appreciated me and I felt as I am on cloud nine. You believe it or not, it was just months back I was considered as a big cacographer, be at school or at home. My days began and ended only with scoldings. I was in a fix, why handwriting was given so much importance in the school. I did my work regularly, wasn’t that enough?

The Silver KeyBy Prinyanka Poptani (Class VIII)

It was a stormy night, a traveler reached an inn. It was very late, he found the door locked from within. He knocked at the door. The gatekeeper responded to the knock saying,“ I have lost the key and the door cannot be opened unless you have a silver key with you”.

My teacher is like a Sun, who fills my life with brightness of knowledge. My teacher is like a moon, who guides me in the darkness. My teacher is like a friend, who remains with me all along. My teacher is like a soul, who guides meto where I belong. My teacher is my God, a soul whom I shallalways adore.

Born in the royal family of Chettinad in Tamil Nadu, he did his schooling from Madras Christian College School, Chennai. He first became a minister in the year 1985 and has held several portfolios since then. He also practices in the Supreme Court and in various High Courts in India. But sometimes change is inevitable and it was true in my case. One day duringmy library class, I got something to read about Gandhji, related to his handwriting. My joy knew no bound when I read - ‘Handwriting wasn’t even always important to Gandhiji. As a young boy he was happily unaware of his inability to write neatly. It was not until 1893, while working as a young barrister in South Africa, he realized how illegible his handwriting was and for how long he had been deceiving himselfas to the extent of his progress and character development.

Gandhiji was ashamed and repented for his negligence. I remembered readinghis words, “I saw that bad handwriting should be regarded as a sign of imperfect education. I would never be able to repair the neglect my youth. Let every young man and woman be warned by my example and understand that good handwritingis a necessary part of education”.

The impact of this valuable piece was so strong that I decided to act as betterlate than never. After all it was an inspiration from the father of our nation, and you will also agree with me that great people always lead us to something excepti-onally good.

The traveler understood what he meant by the silver key. He immediately slipped a silver coin through the hole, and the door opened. As soon as he got in, he said to the gate keeper,”I haveleft my box outside, can you please bring it?”. Agreeing to fetch thebox, the gate keeper went out. As soon as he stepped out of the door, the traveler closed the door from behind. The keeper asked him to open the door so that he maycome in. Now the traveler replied from the inside of the inn,”I havelost the silver key and that silver key is needed to open the door”.Soon the coin was pushed again through the hole and the dishonest gatekeeper was let in.

Moral of the story: Dishonesty meets dishonesty. As you sow, so shall you reap.

Tiny drops of water falling on my window pane,Make a musical sound again and again.

The droplets on the window pane appear like tiny beads,Across the window pane, two girls walk holding colourful umbrellas with the shade of blue, yellow and white.

All this tells me again, that it is a rainy day, It’s time to have a splash and have lots of fun all through the day.
