FACTORY OPTIONS AND/OR ACCESSORIESEconomizerEconomizers save energy, money and improve comfortlevels in the conditioned space. They bring in fresh, outside air for ventilation; and provide cool outside air tocool your building. This also is the preferred method oflow ambient cooling. When integrated with CO2 sensors, economizers can provide even more savings by couplingthe ventilation air to only that amount required based onspace occupancy. Economizers are available, installedand tested by the factory, with either enthalpy ortemperature dry−bulb inputs. There are also models forelectromechanical and direct digital controllers. Additionalsensors are available as accessories to optimize theeconomizer. Economizers include gravity controlledbarometric relief that helps equalize building pressure andambient air pressures. This can be a cost effectivesolution to prevent building pressurization. Economizersare available in Ultra Low Leak and standard low leakversions.

CO2 SensorImproves productivity and saves money by working withthe economizer to intake only the correct amount ofoutside air for ventilation. As occupants fill your building, the CO2 sensor detects their presence through increasingCO2 levels, and opens the economizer appropriately.

When the occupants leave, the CO2 levels decrease, andthe sensor appropriately closes the economizer. Thisintelligent control of the ventilation air, called DemandControl Ventilation (DCV) reduces the overall load on therooftop, saving money.

Smoke DetectorsTrust the experts. Smoke detectors make your applicationsafer and your job easier. ICP smoke detectorsimmediately shut down the rooftop unit when smoke isdetected. They are available, installed by the factory, forsupply air, return air, or both.

Louvered Hail GuardsSleek, louvered panels protect the condenser coil fromhail damage, foreign objects, and incidental contact.

Convenience Outlet (un−powered)Reduce service and/or installation costs by including aconvenience outlet in your specification. ICP will installthis service feature at our factory. Provides a convenient,15 amp, 115v GFCI receptacle with “Wet in Use” cover. The “powered” option allows the installer to power theoutlet from the line side of the disconnect or load side asrequired by code. The “unpowered” option is to bepowered from a separate 115/120v power source.

Non−fused DisconnectThis OSHA−compliant, factory−installed, safety switchallows a service technician to locally secure power to therooftop.

Power Exhaust with Barometric ReliefSuperior internal building pressure control. Thisfield−installed accessory may eliminate the need forcostly, external pressure control fans.

Time Guard II Control CircuitThis accessory protects your compressor by preventingshort−cycling in the event of some other failure, preventsthe compressor from restarting for 30 seconds afterstopping.

Filter or Fan Status SwitchesUse these differential pressure switches to detect a filterclog or indoor fan motor failure. When used in conjunctionwith a compatible unit controller/thermostat, the switcheswill activate an alarm to warn the appropriate personnel.

Motorized 2−Position DamperThe ICP 2−position, motorized outdoor air damper admitsup to 100% outside air. Using reliable, gear−driventechnology, the 2−position damper opens to allowventilation air and closes when the rooftop stops, stoppingunwanted infiltration.

Manual OA DamperManual outdoor air dampers are an economical way tobring in ventilation air. The dampers are available in 25%and 50% versions.

Optional Hot Gas ReHeat Dehumidification SystemICP’s Hot Gas ReHeat dehumidification system is anall−inclusive factory−installed option that can be orderedwith any 3 Phase 036−060 rooftop unit.

This system expands the envelope of operation of ICP’srooftop products to provide unprecedented flexibility tomeet year−round comfort conditions.

The Hot Gas ReHeat dehumidification system has theindustry’s only dual dehumidification mode setting. TheHot Gas ReHeat system includes two new modes ofoperation.

The RAX036−060 rooftop coupled with the Hot GasReHeat system is capable of operating in normal designcooling mode, subcooling mode, and hot gas reheatmode. Normal design cooling mode is when the unit willoperate under its normal sequence of operation by cyclingcompressors to maintain comfort conditions.

Page 5: RAX - Carrier

Specifications subject to change without notice. 5513 11 4100 00

FACTORY OPTIONS AND/OR ACCESSORIES (cont.)Optional Hot Gas ReHeatDehumidification System (cont.)

Subcooling mode will operate to satisfy part load typeconditions when the space requires combined sensibleand a higher proportion of latent load control. Hot GasReheat mode will operate when outdoor temperaturesdiminish and the need for latent capacity is required forsole humidity control. Hot Gas Reheat mode will provideneutral air for maximum dehumidification operation.

Motormaster Head Pressure ControllerThe Motormaster motor controller is a low ambient, headpressure controller kit that is designed to maintain theunit’s condenser head pressure during periods of lowambient cooling operation. This device should be used asan alternative to economizer free cooling wheneconomizer usage is either not appropriate or desired. The Motormaster will either cycle the outdoor fan motorsor operate them at reduced speed to maintain the unitoperation, depending on the model.

Hinged Access Panels

Allows access to unit’s major components with specificallydesigned hinged access panels. Panels are: filters, control box, fan motor and compressor.

Winter Start Kit

The winter start kit by ICP extends the low ambient limitof your rooftop to 25F (−4C). The kit bypasses the lowpressure switch, preventing nuisance tripping of the lowpressure switch. Other low ambient precautions may stillbe prudent.

Alternate Motors and Drives

Some applications need larger horsepower motors, someneed more airflow, and some need both. Regardless ofthe case, your ICP expert has a factory installedcombination to meet your application. A wide selection ofmotors and pulleys (drives) are available, factoryinstalled, to handle nearly any application.

Thru−the−Base Connections

Thru−the−base connections, available as either anaccessory or as a factory option, are necessary to ensureproper connection and seal when routing wire and pipingthrough the rooftop’s basepan and curb. These couplingseliminate roof penetration and should be considered forgas lines, main power lines, as well as control power.

Electric Heaters

ICP offers a full−line of field−installed accessory heaters. The heaters are very easy to use, install and are allpre−engineered and certified.

APPLICATION DATAMin operating ambient temp (cooling):

In mechanical cooling mode, your ICP rooftop can safelyoperate down to an outdoor ambient temperature of 40F(4C) and 25F (−4C), with an accessory winter start kit.It is possible to provide cooling at lower outdoor ambienttemperatures by using less outside air, economizers,and/or accessory low ambient kits.

Max operating ambient temp (cooling):

The maximum operating ambient temperature for coolingmode is 115F (46C). While cooling operation above115F (46C) may be possible, it could cause either areduction in performance, reliability, or a protective actionby the unit’s internal safety devices.

Min and max airflow (cooling mode):

To maintain safe and reliable operation of your rooftop, operate within the cooling airflow limits. Operating abovethe max may cause blow−off, undesired airflow noise, orairflow related problems with the rooftop unit. Operatingbelow the min may cause problems with coil freeze−up.

Airflow:

All units are draw−through in cooling mode.

Outdoor air application strategies:

Economizers reduce operating expenses and compressorrun time by providing a free source of cooling and ameans of ventilation to match application changing needs. In fact, they should be considered for most applications. Also, consider the various economizer control methodsand their benefits, as well as sensors required toaccomplish your application goals. Please contact yourlocal ICP representative for assistance.

Motor limits, Brake horsepower (BHP):

Due to ICP’s internal unit design, air path, and speciallydesigned motors, the full horsepower (maximumcontinuous BHP) band, as listed in the Physical Datatable, can be used with the utmost confidence. There isno need for extra safety factors, as ICP’s motors aredesigned and rigorously tested to use the entire, listedBHP range without either nuisance tripping or prematuremotor failure.

Sizing a rooftop

Bigger isn’t necessarily better. While an air conditionerneeds to have enough capacity to meet the load, itdoesn’t need excess capacity. In fact, having excesscapacity typically results in very poor part loadperformance and humidity control.

Using higher design temperatures than ASHRAErecommends for your location, adding “safety factors” tothe calculated load, and rounding up to the next largestunit, are all signs of oversizing air conditioners.Oversizing can cause short−cycling, and short cyclingleads to poor humidity control, reduced efficiency, higherutility bills, drastic indoor temperature swings, excessivenoise, and increased wear and tear on the air conditioner.

Rather than oversizing an air conditioner, wise contractorsand engineers “right−size” or even slightly undersize airconditioners. Correctly sizing an air conditioner controlshumidity better; promotes efficiency; reduces utility bills;extends equipment life, and maintains even, comfortabletemperatures. Please contact your local ICPrepresentative for assistance.

Low ambient applications

When equipped with a ICP economizer, your rooftop unitcan cool your space by bringing in fresh, cool outside air.In fact, when so equipped, accessory low ambient kit maynot be necessary. In low ambient conditions, unless theoutdoor air is excessively humid or contaminated, economizer−based “free cooling” is the preferred lesscostly and energy conscious method.

In low ambient applications where outside air might not bedesired (such as contaminated or excessively humidoutdoor environments), your ICP rooftop can operate atambient temperatures down to −20F (−29C) using therecommended accessory Motormaster low ambientcontroller.

Winter start

ICP’s winter start kit extends the low ambient limit of yourrooftop to 25F (−4C). The kit bypasses the lowpressure switch, preventing nuisance tripping of the lowpressure switch. Other low ambient precautions may stillbe prudent.

GENERAL FAN PERFORMANCE NOTES1. Interpolation is permissible. Do not extrapolate.2. External static pressure is the static pressure difference between the return duct and the supply duct plus the static

pressure caused by any FIOPs or accessories.3. Tabular data accounts for pressure loss due to clean filters, unit casing, and wet coils. Factory options and accessor-

ies may add static pressure losses. Selection software is available, through your salesperson, to help you select thebest motor/drive combination for your application.

4. The Fan Performance tables offer motor/drive recommendations. In cases when two motor/drive combinations wouldwork, ICP recommended the lower horsepower option.

5. For information on the electrical properties of ICP motors, please see the Electrical information section of this book.6. For more information on the performance limits of ICP motors, see the application data section of this book.7. The EPACT (Energy Policy Act of 1992) regulates energy requirements for specific types of indoor fan motors.

Motors regulated by EPACT include any general purpose, T−frame (three−digit, 143 and larger), single−speed, footmounted, polyphase, squirrel cage induction motors of NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) designA and B, manufactured for use in the United States. Ranging from 1 to 200 Hp, these continuous−duty motorsoperate on 230 and 460 volt, 60 Hz power. If a motor does not fit into these specifications, the motor does not haveto be replaced by an EPACT compliant energy−efficient motor. Variable−speed motors are exempt from EPACTcompliance requirements. Therefore, the indoor fan motors for ICP RAX036−060 units are exempt from theserequirements.

1. In compliance with NEC requirements for multimotor andcombination load equipment (refer to NEC Articles 430 and440), the overcurrent protective device for the unit shall befuse or HACR breaker. Canadian units may be fuse or cir-cuit breaker.

2. Unbalanced 3-Phase Supply VoltageNever operate a motor where a phase imbalance in supplyvoltage is greater than 2%. Use the following formula to de-termine the percentage of voltage imbalance.

% Voltage Imbalance = 100 xmax voltage deviation from average voltage

average voltage

Example: Supply voltage is 230-3-60

AB = 224 vBC = 231 vAC = 226 v

Average Voltage =(224 + 231 + 226)

=681

3 3

= 227

Determine maximum deviation from average voltage.(AB) 227 – 224 = 3 v(BC) 231 – 227 = 4 v(AC) 227 – 226 = 1 vMaximum deviation is 4 v.Determine percent of voltage imbalance.

% Voltage Imbalance = 100 x4

227

= 1.76%

This amount of phase imbalance is satisfactory as it is below themaximum allowable 2%.IMPORTANT: If the supply voltage phase imbalance is more than2%, contact your local electric utility company immediately.

SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONGeneralThe sequence below describes the sequence ofoperation for an electromechanical unit with andwithout a factory installed EconoMi$er IV and X(called “economizer” in this sequence). Forinformation regarding a direct digital controller, seethe start−up, operations, and troubleshooting manualfor the applicable controller.

Electromechanical units with no economizer

Cooling (Single speed indoor fan motor) —

When the thermostat calls for cooling, terminals Gand Y1 are energized. As a result, the indoor fancontactor (IFC) and the compressor contactor (C1)are energized, causing the indoor fan motor (IFM),compressor #1, and outdoor fan to start. If the unithas 2 stages of cooling, the thermostat willadditionally energize Y2. The Y2 signal will energizecompressor contactor #2 (C2), causing compressor#2 to start. Regardless of the number of stages, theoutdoor fan motor runs continuously while unit iscooling.

Heating

NOTE: The RAX is sold as cooling only. If electricheaters are required, use only factory−approvedelectric heaters. They will operate as describedbelow.

Units have either 1 or 2 stages of electric heat. Whenthe thermostat calls for heating, power is applied tothe W1 terminal at the unit. The unit control willenergize the indoor fan contactor and the first stageof electric heat. On units with 2−stage heating, whenadditional heating is required, the second stage of

electric heat (if equipped) will be energized whenpower is applied at the W2 terminal on the unit.

Electromechanical units with an economizer

Cooling —

When free cooling is not available, the compressorswill be controlled by the zone thermostat. When freecooling is available, the outdoor air damper ismodulated by the EconoMi$er IV and X control toprovide a 50F (10C) to 55F (13C) mixed airtemperature into the zone. As the mixed airtemperature fluctuates above 55F (13C) or below50F (10C) dampers will be modulated (open orclose) to bring the mixed air temperature back withincontrol. If mechanical cooling is utilized with freecooling, the outdoor air damper will maintain itscurrent position at the time the compressor is started. If the increase in cooling capacity causes the mixedair temperature to drop below 45F (9C), then theoutdoor air damper position will be decreased to theminimum position. If the mixed air temperaturecontinues to fall, the outdoor air damper will close.Control returns to normal once the mixed airtemperature rises above 48F (9C). The powerexhaust fans will be energized and de−energized, ifinstalled, as the outdoor air damper opens andcloses.

If field−installed accessory CO2 sensors areconnected to the EconoMi$er IV and X control, ademand controlled ventilation strategy will begin tooperate. As the CO2 level in the zone increasesabove the CO2 setpoint, the minimum position of thedamper will be increased proportionally. As the CO2

Page 44: RAX - Carrier

Specifications subject to change without notice.44 513 11 4100 00

level decreases because of the increase in fresh air,the outdoor air damper will be proportionally closed. For EconoMi$er IV and X operation, there must be athermostat call for the fan (G). If the unit is occupiedand the fan is on, the damper will operate at minimumposition. Otherwise, the damper will be closed.

When the EconoMi$er IV and X control is in theoccupied mode and a call for cooling exists (Y1 onthe thermostat), the control will first check for indoorfan operation. If the fan is not on, then cooling will notbe activated. If the fan is on, then the control willopen the EconoMi$er IV and X damper to theminimum position.

On the initial power to the EconoMi$er IV and Xcontrol, it will take the damper up to 2 1/2 minutesbefore it begins to position itself. After the initialpower−up, further changes in damper position cantake up to 30 seconds to initiate. Damper movementfrom full closed to full open (or vice versa) will takebetween 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 minutes. If free cooling canbe used as determined from the appropriatechangeover command (switch, dry bulb, enthalpycurve, differential dry bulb, or differential enthalpy),then the control will modulate the dampers open tomaintain the mixed air temperature setpoint at 50F(10C) to 55F (13C). If there is a further demandfor cooling (cooling second stage − Y2 is energized),then the control will bring on compressor stage 1 tomaintain the mixed air temperature setpoint. TheEconoMi$er IV and X damper will be open atmaximum position. EconoMi$er IV and X operation islimited to a single compressor.

Heating

The sequence of operation for the heating is thesame as an electromechanical unit with noeconomizer. The only difference is how theeconomizer acts. The economizer will stay at theEconomizer Minimum Position while the evaporatorfan is operating. The outdoor air damper is closedwhen the indoor fan is not operating.

Optional Hot Gas ReHeat DehumidificationSystem

Units with the factory equipped Hot Gas ReHeatoption are capable of providing multiple modes ofimproved dehumidification as a variation of thenormal cooling cycle. The Hot Gas ReHeat optionincludes additional valves in the liquid line anddischarge line of each refrigerant circuit, a smallreheat condenser coil downstream of the evaporator, and Motormaster variable−speed control of some orall outdoor fans. Operation of the revised refrigerantcircuit for each mode is described below.

The Hot Gas ReHeat system provides threesub−modes of operation: Cool, Reheat1, andReheat2.

Cool mode − provides a normal ratio of Sensible andLatent Cooling effect from the evaporator coil.

Reheat1 − provides increased Latent Cooling whileslightly reducing the Sensible Cooling effect.

Reheat2 − provides normal Latent Cooling but withnull or minimum Sensible Cooling effect delivered tothe space.

The Reheat1 and Reheat2 modes are available whenthe unit is not in a Heating mode and when the LowAmbient Lockout switch is closed.

The following diagrams depict piping for Single Stagecooling units.
