Welcome to our second annual ‘New Gen’ bull sale to be held at Naracoorte, on the 26th of February 2015. We have catalogued 30 select bulls which have been assessed, scanned, measured and vaccinated, ready for use.

The Raven program has rapidly developed using leading genetics globally. This has been possible through the use of Embryo Transfer technologies & the alliance we have made with the Hunt Limousin herd Nebraska, USA which has enabled the purchase and import of embryos and semen. This has positioned the Raven herd as one of the leading Limousin herds in Australia. All Purebred bulls to be offered in the 2015 sale share an average EBV that ranks in the top 5% of the breed for 400day weight, EMA and Carcase weight, plus top 10% of the breed for 200day and 600day weight traits, Milk and all 4 $ indexes.

The Raven herd’s market relevant performance traits have been proven after winning Grand Champion Carcase at the 2013 Southern Grass-fed Carcase Classic, repeating it again with another winning carcase in 2014.

The Raven herd is one of only two in Australia (only stud in S.A.) to have a 5 Star rating for “Completeness of Performance” in data recording. This enables us to provide more accurate data to assist beef producers in their bull selection. This highly accurate data in addition with our participation in the Limousin Assurance Program gives buyers of Raven bull’s even greater confidence that the animals they receive will perform to expectations.

RAVEN 100 (Purebred Limousin)Raven specialises in producing high performing, polled, purebred Limousin, a configuration that is well suited to current market specifications and with the added advantage of Limousin’s high growth rate, muscling and meat yield. The Raven herd delivers these profitable market attributes with a focus on breeding structurally sound, docile cattle that have an ability to finish on pasture.

RAVEN 50 & RAVEN 75 (Lim-Flex = Limousin X Angus) A Lim-Flex is a registered Limousin/Angus cross, combining the best of the two breeds.

When stabilised at 25% to 75% the resulting Lim-Flex animal maintains the maternal traits, do-ability and marbling characteristics of the Angus breed, whilst maximising the yield, growth and muscle that is unique to Limousin. This hybrid vigour has proven very successful for British-bred (such as Angus) herds looking to add performance and increase weight gains, whilst still maintaining marketability.

As a reference in this catalogue the number identifies what percentage of Limousin makes up the individual bull e.g. Lim-Flex 50 = 50% Limousin with the remaining 50% being black Angus.

ThE RAVEN Lim-FLEx pRogRAmBuilt on a solid foundation of quality select Angus registered females that have come from the heart of the “Bull Oak Well” herd. These Angus females have been infused with breed leading Limousin genetics to produce a Lim-Flex. Raven black Lim-Flex bulls offer strategic breeding options for producers looking to increase efficiency and productivity of their breeding herd.

Example: When using a Lim-Flex50 (50/50 Limousin/Angus) bull over Angus or black cows producers receive the benefits from the 25% influence of Limousin in the progeny, without losing traditional (Angus) markets or replacement females.

The use of a well-balanced mineral and vitamin supplement to meet the bull’s requirements is the main management consideration. While proper levels of all minerals are important to bull health and production, the four key minerals that have a direct effect on bull fertility are zinc, copper, manganese and selenium.

An adequate mineral supply is also important for bone soundness and mobility. Zinc, copper and manganese are needed for skeletal development and maintenance, as well as hoof integrity. A bull suffering from lameness or joint problems will breed to fewer cows.

The overall conditioning period, using higher levels of trace minerals should be aimed at the development of yearling bulls and 60-90 days before initiation of the breeding season, which allows for the turnover of sperm that may have been affected by any transient mineral deficiencies.

scurred - Unrelated to the horn gene, a scurr is a small horn like growth that isn’t attached to the scull. Scurrs are sex influenced and often only demonstrated in uncastrated males.
