• Marcus Garvey (born in 1887) started a movement called “Back-to-Africa”

• He was preaching the redemption of the black race through and African king

• The White Religion was oppressing the blacks • Babylon was formed by the Western Civilized Nations

(western world)• Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA)• Garvey was convicted for fraud and deported back to

Jamaica• In 1927 Garvey proclaimed, "Look to Africa for the

crowning of a Black King, he shall be the Redeemer" (The Rastafarians, p. 67).

• Ras Tafari Makonnen was crowned king of Ethiopia, king of kings at Addis Ababa on November 2, 1930

• Under the title of: Emperor Haile Selassie I • It means the power of the Trinity• He ruled Ethiopia until his overturn in 1974 (with

times of trouble) and he died in 1975• Many saw his death as transcendence into full

deity/• So, Haile Selassie I is the God of the Rastafari

and the followers call themselves Rastafari- Rastas

What is Rastafari?

• Rastas always seem to point to every “true” black man as a rasta

• Some rastas say that Rastafarianism is genre of Reformed Christianity

• Which point to Ethiopia as Judah and that Christ was manifested in Haile Selassie I

• That Jah is Jehovah• The white man tricked man into believing that

Jesus was white.• Satan in the god of the White men (Babylon)
