Rashtriya Samaj Vigyan Parishad 3rd Annual Conference

on Social Science and National Resurgence

Organized by Patliputra University, Patna

November 30, December 1 & 2, 2018 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday)

(Margashirsh Krishna 8, 9 and 10, Samvat 2075)

About Rashtriya Samaj Vigyan Parishad (RSVP) Rashtriya Samaj Vigyan Parishad (RSVP) is an important organization of nationalist social scientists, which is involved in revising and reconstructing the subjects of social science in consonance with Indian thought & philosophy. It is noteworthy, that all subjects of social science whether it is economics or sociology, history or politics, all are influenced by Western philosophy and ideology. It is rather unfortunate, that despite India’s rich tradition of indigenous knowledge, the creation of social science has not been based on it. The courses, teaching and research in social science are virtually impacted by colonial mindset. Indian values, philosophy & culture are barely reflected in the subjects of socialscience. Maladies plaguing Indian society which should have been addressed and resolved by scholars and researchers of social science have largely remained neglected. Neither has social science holistically contributed in generating a spirit of national pride or dedication towards the nation .It is precisely with this purported aim that about 100 social scientists met in Rambhau Mahalagi Prabodhini, Mumbai in 2008 and after due deliberations unanimously decided that it is imperative to create an association of National Social Scientists. Subsequently Rashtriya Samaj Vigyan Parishad was formed and duly registered in New Delhi under the National Registrar Societies Act 1860. Thereafter, RSVP has successfully organized several seminars and conferences pertaining to various dimensions of social science. About the city – Patna The city of Patna, sprawling on the southern bank of sacred river Ganga, has been thriving and enriching Indian civilization and culture for ages. It is one of the most glorious and continuously flourishing civilizational urban sites in the entire world, comprising a unique amalgamation of the ancient and modern Indian values and culture. Ancient Patliputra or Palibothra or present Patna of 4th century BC to 2th century BC was undisputedly one of the greatest cities of the contemporary world. Since ancient times it has been a cradle of urban civilization, amazingly vast and patriotic empires, democratically ingenious republics, life altering insightful religions, enthralling Sanskrit literature and revolutionary mathematical inventions. Today Patna is the capital of Bihar which has incessantly defined and magnified the frontiers and horizons of political, social, scientific and intellectual universe by its legendary history- signified by the emergence of Buddha, Mahavir, Chanakya, Ashoka, Panini, Aryabhatta, Mandan Mishra,Guru Govind Singh, Jai Prakash Narayan, etc. Today it is one of the fastest growing cities in the world in terms of economic vectors, educational and intellectual activities and research. Patna brimming with a vibrant folk culture of the region is essentially a multicultural and multilingual city envisaging multidimensional transformation in every walk of life. It is going to host the Third annual National Conference of Rashtriya Samaaj Vigyan Parishad on 'Social Sciences and National Resurgence', which would attract nationally and internationally reputed visionaries, thinkers, intellectuals, scholars, researchers and speakers from different domains of social sciences.

About Patliputra University

Patliputra University, Patna was established on 18th March, 2018. All the colleges of Patna and Nalanda districts of Bihar are included in the jurisdiction of the Patliputra University except those attached to the Patna University. The University has within its jurisdiction 25 constituent colleges, two government girls’ colleges, three minority colleges and a number of affiliated colleges. Many of these colleges are running university-approved postgraduate centres in various subjects besides skill-oriented courses in vocational and technical/professional areas. The Headquarter of Patliputra University is in Patna having its present address as “Old bypass Road, Kankarbagh, Patna-800 020, Bihar (India).”

The university has set ‘avant-garde’ International standards in Teaching-Learning and Research with the aid of uniquely conceived innovative approaches that are aimed to propel the quality of higher education to new heights in

the country. The ambience of the university is being developed with radical ideas having global perspective in the domain of education. The university aspires to collaborate with several national and international academic bodies, research organizations, universities, industries, government agencies and nongovernment organizations under the effective leadership of its founder Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Gulab Chand Ram Jaiswal.

About the Conference: Concept Development and policy-planning in India since independence have been largely guided by ideas and ideals borrowed from the West. Whether it is in the economic or political or socio-cultural sphere, standards of development in India have been defined in terms of concepts and models evolved in Europe based on its peculiar historical experience, cultural and philosophical traditions. The process of adopting and adapting has not only created hybrid identity, but also given rise to fragmentary and centrifugal tendency inimical to the building up of stable and prosperous Rashtra. Rather than contesting the 'universalist' claims of European- specific concepts, categories and constructs, much of our social science literature has ironically drawn on the uncritical appropriations from European systems of thought.

Regardless of varied approaches - Marxian, Weberian and critical- theoretical premise as well as the analytical vocabulary employed in the studies of Indian history, society, economy and polity remain Eurocentric or West-oriented. Implicit in these approaches is the recognition of superiority of Western values, institutions and practices while undervaluing the explanatory salience of Indian thought, its civilizational heritage and spiritual-philosophical tradition. As a result, we cease to be the producers and disseminators of knowledge and ideas that we were 'once upon a time’. Instead, we have become mere consumers of what is 'made in' the Western institutions. Reflective of this, many of our academicians feel that their credibility rests on whether they are certified by the West or not. The dependency syndrome in the academia is, doubtless, structural. It is psychological as well due to our historical experience of external invasion and colonisation. While the Mughal and Turkish invaders destroyed our pre-eminent centres of knowledge, burnt down libraries and universities, the British developed an education system designed to “enframe” Indian mind in the colonial mould whereby power penetrated everywhere but unnoticeable at the same time. Eventually, the natives began to revere the West and worse, think of themselves in terms of Orientalist concepts about their own national character and culture.

In an attempt to develop an alternative analytical framework rooted in Indian systems of thought and values, the “RasthtriyaSamaj Vigyan Parishad” founded by a group of nationalist social scientists proposes to hold its 3rd Annual Conference in Patna between 30 November and 2 December, 2018 in collaboration with the Patiliputra University. Apart from critiquing the prevalent concepts and narratives about Indian history, polity and society and exposing the discursive power they exercise in de-legitimising the traditional modes of knowledge creation in Indian social science, the Parishad aims to provide a unique platform for academicians, young researchers, area specialists and subject experts to work collectively towards contextualizing and indigenizing social science research in the country based on Indian literature, philosophy and spirituality relevant to the entire humankind.
