Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) waslaunched by the Department of
Animal Husbandry & Dairying fordevelopment and conservation of
indigenous breeds through selectivebreeding in the breeding tract and
genetic upgradation of nondescriptbovine population using elite
indigenous breeds like Gir, Sahiwal,Rathi, Deoni, Tharparkar, Red Sindhi.
What is it?
The scheme has two components namely National Programme forBovine Breeding (to arrange quality Artificial Insemination
services at farmers’ doorstep) and National Mission on BovineProductivity (for enhancing milk production and productivity of
bovine population in the country).

The 20th Livestock Censuswas released by the
Department of AnimalHusbandry & Dairying under
the Ministry of Fisheries,Animal Husbandry & Dairying.
Livestock census covers the census oflivestock, poultry, implements andmachinery used for livestock rearing.
The total population of nativecattle — male and female together,dropped 6% to 14.2 crore animals,while exotic and crossbred cattlesaw an overall growth of almost
27% to 5 crore animals.
