In 2001, there were 60 million transistors for every human on the planet ...

… by 2010 there will be 1 billion transistors per human…

… each costing 1/10 millionth of a cent.

In 2005 there were 1.3 billion RFID tags in circulation…

… by 2010 there will be 33 billion.

One billion camera phones were sold in 2007, up from 450 million in 2006 …

3G devices growing 30% annually.

An estimated 2 billion people will be on the Web by 2011 ...

… and a trillion connected objects – cars, appliances, cameras, roadways, pipelines –comprising the "Internet of Things."

Generation ...

What can Councils do to create a Smarter Planet?

– Gen Y is taking over• Biggest generation since Baby Boomers• Three times the size of Gen X

– Gen Y ...• Are plugged-in - most are “digital natives”• Don’t view TV as King - TV is consumed more on demand• Care more about listening to what their friends and peers

say, rather than what an advert “shouts” at them• Expect employers to be flexible with a modern culture

because work isn’t their whole world• Are socially conscious but expect to be able to connect in

via their natural styles

★ 250 million active users★ Average user has 120 friends on the site★ Over-25s account for 54% of user base★ Data from March showed US users over-35 doubling over

preceeding 60 days★ 220 million new pictures added each week

★ > 100,000,000 videos★ 15 hours of video uploaded every minute

★ > 12,000,000 articles★ 265 different language editions

★ Visitors to Twitter.com continue to grow passing 50 million unique visitors in July

★ Twitter user numbers are actually even higher because many people use applications on their PCs and phones

★ How many followers does Oprah have now?

The reason we will all begin to transform our systems, operations,

enterprises and personal lives to take advantage of a smart planet isn’t just

because we can.

It’s because we must.

£2.5 billion wasted in energy bills by UK companies due to inefficiencies such as leaving lights and computers on.

£7-8 billion is the estimated cost of road congestion in the UK economy per year.

76% of apples consumed in the UK come from overseas –travelling on average 3700 miles to reach us.

One third of the amount of food purchased by UK consumers is thrown away.

Life span for a UK citizen is reduced by 8 months due to poor air quality.

Financial markets spread risk but can’t track it; this has led to undermined confidence and uncertainty.

The World is Getting Smarter: Because it Must

13

Page 14: Rashik Parmar Ibm Smarter Planet

We’ve thought about IT as the world of data centres, software, PCs, routers, bandwidth.

We’ve thought about infrastructure as the world of buildings, factories, hospitals, roads, pipelines.

Those worlds are converging.

We’re confident that the world can become smarter. We’re building it with our clients.

What can Councils do to create a Smarter Planet?

Why is this relevant to Councils?

Councils are increasingly being made responsible for societal outcomes

– Stronger communities– Safer communities– Children and young people– Adult health and well being– Local economy– Environmental sustainability

…. through their LAA targets– described from “Strong and Prosperous

Communities” through to general Well-being

These are often outside the scope of their services

– and those of their partners

We have some examples of smart projects…..

British Airways: Uses mobile device check-in and other self-service technologies to help facilitate a trouble-free travel experience and save the airline $3.50 per passenger.

Cheshire Adult Social Care: Achieved a 20% reduction in time and cost required to perform in-home senior visits, improving the ability to proactively manage the course of health and social care for senior citizens.

Natural England: Implemented an evidence-based Carbon Measurement and management system to helpachieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2010.

Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency: Achieved a 33% reduction in cost of taxing vehicles, data updates from up to six weeks to near real time, and improved customer service. Millions of customers now benefit from transactions that typically take less than four minutes and include electronic checking of insurance, MOT and other entitlements.

Swansea University: Is using a new supercomputer to help predict what will happen to the world’s climate by modelling complex climate change scenarios.

Thy-Mors Hospital, Denmark: Visual representation of the health status using a 3D avatar linked to SNOMED-CT clinical terms – a combination of visualisation and medical record data.

What can Councils do to create a Smarter Planet?

In this smarter world, we need our infrastructure to propel us forward, not hold us back.

Infrastructure that is instrumented, interconnected and intelligent. Infrastructure that brings together business and IT to create new possibilities.

We need a dynamic infrastructure.

What can Councils do to create a Smarter Planet?

We’ve only just begun touncover what is possible ona smarter planet.

The world will continue to become smaller, flatter and smarter. We are moving into the age of the globally integrated and intelligent economy, society and planet.

Local Councils have a critical role.

The question is, what will we do with it?
