Rapid Response Conservation Plan for the Arabian Caracal in the Shouf Biosphere Reserve The project is to set up a rapid response conservation plan for the Arabian Caracal in the Shouf Biosphere Reserve (SBR) to: 1. gather information on the status of the population; 2. undertake the preliminary steps towards a full conservation strategy 3. involve concerned stakeholders. In 2015, a specimen of Arabian Caracal (Caracal caracal schmitzi) was incidentally captured in the SBR. The species was believed to be extinct since a long time not only in the Reserve, but in the whole of Lebanon. Further field investigations from conservation scientists have confirmed the existence of a population of this rare wild cat within the boundaries of SBR. This grant was given to enable to implement a rapid response conservation program and: 1. set up a Caracal Working Group including national and international experts, and local stakeholders, 2. buy equipment to acquire critical, minimum information on the size, distribution, and behavioural patterns of the caracal in the Reserve; 3. put in place the first emergency measures to guarantee the conservation of the species; 4. build the capacity of SBR staff and volunteers to implement the measures, 5. spread awareness and educate local stakeholders on the presence and value of this wild cat. The project runs for 12 months, starting in April 2016. More about the Arabian Caracal: The Arabian Caracal is one of the seven subspecies of Caracal, a medium-sized wild cat closely related to the Serval and African Golden Cat. Previously it had been placed in the Felis and Lynx genera, but molecular evidence has placed it in its own genus. The Arabian Caracal is the smallest subspecies of Caracal. Its tawny brown fur with a white underside is lighter in coloration than the African subspecies. It has a slender body, with long legs. Its conspicuous features are its triangular ears, which have 4-5 cm long black hair tufts. Its tail is short relative to its body size and is about a third of its head and body length. It has hairs between its pads, to protect them when traveling over hot rocks or sand. The subspecies exhibits sexual dimorphism with males being larger than females. The Arabian Caracal used to be widespread in the Middle East as well as central and South-west Asia, from India and Pakistan to Egypt, through the Arabian peninsula.
