Chisholm Trail effects on Texas cattle ranching
Cattle ranching grew because of the Chisholm Trail.
Cowboys had a way to take their cattle to Kansas to sell them to meat-packing plants.
The Chisholm Trail also may have decreased cattle ranching too, because some decided to move their cattle to open land closer to Kansas and leave Texas.
Cattle could be sent to meat-packing plants from the railroad towns in Kansas.
Where did the Chisholm Trail begin?
San Antonio,
Texas
How is ranching different today compared to in the past?
Many ranchers fence their land to keep cattle from wandering off.
Ranchers raise crops to feed the animals.
Animals drink mainly from water wells so they don’t have to travel so far.
Ranchers began to decrease the size of their herds.
Lesson 3 Review1. How did cattle raising help develop
the economy of the Southwest?
2. How did ranching change when the open range was closed?
3. How have cowhands become part of the lore of our nation?
