Teacher: Mrs. Harshman lharshman@pinerichland .org (lower case “L) Pine Richland defeated Penn Hills 43-6 on Friday night. The final score was misleading, however, as it was just 14-6 after a Pine-Richland fumble was returned for a touchdown on the first play of the second half. From there, however we started scoring, however we never dominated. That is not extremely concerning because Penn Hills is ranked 4th in the area. It would have been a close game if not for a boatload of mistakes from Penn Hills. For example, in the first half, Penn Hills outgained us 141-36 yards, we turned it over a few times, and they drove inside of our 10 yard line twice, however we wound up being ahead 14-0. Penn Hills didn’t score either of the times that they were inside of our 10 yard line. First, they had a bad snap on a field goal, and then they fumbled trying to run with it, and we returned it 74 yards for a touchdown. The other time, we sacked them, and then stopped them on fourth down. Also, they had a long pass, and then proceeded to fumble, and Thomas Burns returned it pretty far. They also had a number of penalties in the second half. On our side, Thomas Burns and Dawson Goltz both had good games. Thomas had several key tackles, as well as returning a fumble for about 30 yards, but then he got hurt. He walked off under his own power twice, and I think that he is going to be alright (fingers crossed). Goltz returned the fumble mentioned above for a touchdown, as well as making an unbelievable catch for a 37 yard touchdown in the second half. I do not know how many all-purpose yards he had, but I think he probably had around 150. A great game from him despite a subpar (mostly) game by our offense. It wasn’t entirely negative, however. This game posed some adversity, most particularly in the early second half, and our team responded as well as you could expect, so that was good sign. Credit Penn Hills for a good defensive game plan, and it stumped us in the first half because it limited big plays, but in the second half we beat it well, and we’ll probably practice going against that this week anyway just so that it can’t beat us again. Penn Hills is a good team, and if this was going to happen at some point, I’m glad that it was now so that the #2 and #3 teams in the WPIAL, Bethel Park and Central Catholic, who we play the next two weeks, are not the ones to pull it out of a hat because either of them may have beaten us. We have a tough road the next two weeks, so let’s hope that Kenny and Thomas are alright. All Stats according to Pittsburgh- Post-Gazette. Navigating the hallways at PRHS is always a bit of a challenge. At times I have to travel from one end of the school to the other in just five minutes, and while this is completely doable, nothing is worse than trying to get from one place to another and being stuck behind someone who just cannot walk at a normal pace. This is a serious problem at PRHS. My fellow students inability to walk at a regular speed is something that I simply fail to grasp. We all have things

to do and places to be, so why can’t everyone simply get there faster and do what they need to do. Walking at such a slow pace is bothersome to everyone around you, and yes I understand that the hallway is crowded and the congestion will delay things, but it should not make getting from one side of the building to another such a hassle. It is like being stuck behind that little old lady on the highway who is going 20mph in a 60mph zone. It is difficult and annoying, but you cannot pass her, so you just have

to sit there and drive on, hoping she will take the next exit. While many of us (myself included) have yet to drive and actually be at the wheel when stuck behind said old lady, the hallways at PRHS are most likely a similar experience. The amount of time I have spent silently seething about others walking at such a painfully slow speed is way too much. So I am asking you one student, to all the others, save me the suffering, have some courtesy, and pick up the pace.

2026 World Cup Could Be Coming to Pittsburgh The U.S. May Welcome the Tournament for the First Time in Over 20 years

SAM STELLA STAFF REPORTER

The US, Canada, and Mexico are making a joint bid to host the 2026 World Cup. They asked a total of 44 cities to submit applications, and they are now down to 41 cities with 32 in the US (including Pittsburgh), 6 in Canada, and 3 in Mexico. Pittsburgh still has to get through a few more hurdles though. By March 16, 2018, the official bid will be submitted to FIFA, and that is expected to include about 20-25 cities. Then, FIFA will narrow it down from there, taking it to at least 12 cities, but probably not much more than that. Finally, the joint bid would have to be selected by FIFA to host the World Cup. The chances of Pittsburgh actually being selected are pretty small because there are a ton of qualifications and we would be going up against a) prime North American soccer cities such as

Mexico City, b) Large Cities such as Los Angeles and New York, c) Big American Soccer Cities with MLS teams like Kansas City, and d) Our infrastructure for big events is not perfect. Still, it is fun to dream, and even if we don’t make the top 12, but make the top 20-25, we could still host the International Broadcast Center, host team base camps, and/or host other events such as the Preliminary Draw. Hosting any major soccer event, particularly this one, and doing well as a host also would help Pittsburgh in our push for an MLS team (although we are not that close now because we don’t have a lot of money, or city backing, or a huge fanbase for the Riverhounds (Pittsburgh’s USL team), however this (hopefully) combined with the large turnout for the AC Milan-Manchester City game in 2014 may convince

the city and the MLS that Pittsburgh has a soccer fanbase and that we would attend soccer matches. This could also help the city make a case to host other major events, most notably the Super Bowl. Currently, the case against Pittsburgh is that we do not have the infrastructure, i.e. hotels and roads, to handle a large mass of people coming for an event. Successfully hosting the World Cup would be a step in the right direction for the city in future campaigns. This may be a bit of a longshot, however, this opportunity would be huge for the city. We’ll keep you posted as more happens, although there probably won’t be much more news until March. Information obtained from ESPN.
