Texas Tech University - ARCH 5502- Pongratz - Fall 10

The Deep Surface Studio intends to explore the possibilities of fabrication with surface repetition, relief and variation. The introduction of milling maching made the initial prototype fabrication process possible in order to create tangible conceptual designs.

    Deep Surface Studio*Super Azzurri

  • Initial Concept

    Tile Evolution

The initial strategy for the Super Azzurri piece was to create a surface field that contained variation that could be created with the least number of tiling.

The concentration of variation takes place within the first evolution, where seven tiles are created, then the seven tiles can assembe the next five generations of tile evolutions, which in theory are only 2 tiles (see A & B) rotated along their axis. Therefore when assembled, a field of variation can be accomplished with the least amount of tiles.

    Tile Generation Evolution

  • A preliminary evolution depicting the variation within a field, in this instance the pattern is generated from 10 tile evolutions into 4 tile generations.

    Preliminary Evolution

  • Schematic pattering in 3D, where curve becomes surface.

    Surface Relief

  • Relief not only begins to vary according to the number of curves but through surface height.

    Surface Relief Variation

  • Finalized surface relief with tiling strategy.

    Additional Variation Strategy

    Final Stacking

  • Software aided milling simulation was vigorously implemented until desired milling conditions were met.

Changes in the cutting processgreatly affect resulting texture andappearance.

Simulated processes and finishes were:- Horizontal Finishing- Parallel Finishing- Spiral Finishing- 3D Pocketing- Mixed Spiral with Pocketing

Cutting times played an important rolein determining finishes. Intricate or elaborate finishes led to longer cuttingtimes, and smooth simple finisheswere exponentially shorter.

    Simulation

  • After simulations were successfully completed and the milling process began on 2 rigid insulation stock. (Generation Tile B Above)

    Plaster Casting

  • Final Casts and Color ExperimentA final 3 piece cast of Generation Evolution Type B was created along with a few color experiments utilizing broken plaster casts.

  • Texas Tech University - ARCH Comprehensive Studio I - Pongratz - Fall 09New construction of a spa/resort in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Actual theraputic processes shall aid the design, while maintaining site integrity.Final design derived from two treatments: Hot Stone massage, and Lomi Lomi massage. A pattern was created from both treatments, program and site conditions.
