HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
I want to start the New Year out by thanking the Club members who stepped up to make the Road Runner Region Christmas Party such a great success. Thanks to Marsha MenNe for making the initial plans and reservations. In the end, Patricia Blackwell stepped up to execute the plan. Becky Schrieber, John Shannon, Janice Swope, and Wendy Wiele all pitched in to help with registration, gathering of door prizes and general setup and support. Bill Swope took photos at the party, and Dennis Chamberlain assisted by organizing and running the audio-visuals. It was truly was a group effort .
In the year to come, you will hear me talk a lot about volunteers. Our club depends on volunteers; they make our socials, drive outs and autocross events what they are. Carrie Rowland and Kelly Raab, volunteer Fiesta Co-Chairs, are doing a great job with Fiesta planning. Fiesta 2020 in Santa Fe is a major undertaking for the Region and we are currently seeking volunteers to fill a variety of positions during the May event. This includes volunteers to help with registration and reception; volunteers to help setup and stage the Concours on the Plaza; volunteers to help with the Gimmick Rally; and volunteers to conduct the drive- outs. Please see the most recent email blast for more information and contact Sean Simpson (our outgoing Secretary and new Vice President) at [email protected] or [email protected]. You will be hearing a lot more about this as the event draws nearer.
As we get closer to Fiesta, we will be conducting practice drive-outs to give Fiesta tour leads, mids and sweeps hands-on experience before Fiesta. Going on a practice tour is is a great way to meet other Club
members and help us prepare for Fiesta. Additionally, 2020 will see more drive-outs. Steve Johnson, Drive-Out Chair, has a very ambitious plan for the year beyond Fiesta.
Last year we found that there was an interest in off-highway tours. Willard & Marsha MenNe and Evelyn & I have organized one of these tours in the past. If you are interested in organizing an off-highway tour, please let me know. We would like to get more events for the Cayenne and Macan folks on the calendar.
Our Autocross season will start soon; you do not need to drive in an event to help out. If you would like to find out more about volunteering to work at an event, contact Evelyn Watkins at [email protected].
In the days to come, the website will be updated to reflect your newly elected Board Members. I urge you to provide any input on events or activities you would like the Club to have, to me or to one of the Club’s officers or Members at Large. Let us know what you would like to see the Club doing or volunteer and tell us what you would like to help us do.
That is all I have for this month. For everyone who has volunteered in the past, thank you! I hope to see more Club members step up to volunteer this year; thank you in advance.

Happy New Year! Not only a new year, but a new decade. Welcome to 2020. Will we call this decade the “roaring 20’s V2”? In the automotive world, thinking about the sound coming from electric vehicles, probably not. I would imagine the automotive world will look much different in 2029. Probably more so than the time from 2010 to 2019. You know the lyrics to “Auld Lang Syne,” go “May old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind”. Well we have a story in this issue of Ramblings that brought those lyrics to mind. Some months ago Marc Schwartz mentioned to me that two Roadrunner members had reconnected because of the club. It seems that these members were friends and coworkers on the east coast in the early 1970s.Then as happens to old acquaintances, life took them in different directions. Both moved west in their later years, one to Pagosa Springs and one to Albuquerque. Both had stayed committed through the years to the Porsche car life. Soon after arriving in Albuquerque, John Shannon happened to be looking at a current issue of Ramblings and saw a letter to the editor we published from his old friend Al Northrup. So John got on the internet and looked Al up and sure enough it was the same Al, only about 50 years later. So my challenge was getting them together in one place in order to tell their story. As fate would have it, both guys came to the Roadrunner annual meeting in December. Al was on his way back east for a long weekend of holiday parties and more old acquaintances. And he was staying with John. So after the annual meeting we all adjourned to a
pub on Juan Tabo and I was able to get the whole story of that part of their life in Maryland. It was loads of fun hearing them share their in common memories. I’m happy to be able to share them with all our members in this issue of Ramblings. The annual Roadrunner Holiday Party was over top as parties go. Our venue changed this year. Also, the club went back to a Friday evening dinner. Perhaps for those reasons and maybe others, nearly 80 club members attended the event. At the table where Ann and I sat we only knew one other couple. Many attendees were new members or members who hadn’t been very active. That’s great. Thanks to Patricia and Bob Blackwell and others who had a hand in putting together this holiday party. The region is in need of some volunteers in a variety of areas. We need a social event chair to help coordinate the monthly Meet and Greet dinner. Fiesta New Mexico 2020 will be happening over Memorial Day weekend in May. This event needs lots of volunteers in many areas. And lastly, Ramblings can always use photographs of our many events. There are announcements in this issue of Ramblings for all of these volunteer positions. You could make it a New Years resolution to step up and help out the Roadrunner Region. I hope everyone has a healthy, safe and prosperous 2020. Thanks for reading this issue of Ramblings.

Roadrunner Region members stepped up to help those less fortunate with a food drive-out to Storehouse West in Rio Rancho. Fourteen cars and twenty members donated over 1000 lbs of non perishable foods to the non profit
pantry. This was the third year the Storehouse West was the beneficiary of the region’s charity. Special thanks to Yvonne Teske for organizing this charity drive.

2020- What a year it’s going to be!!!It’s shaping up to be a banner year for PCA members around the zone. If there’s any year to really plan ahead and lock in your calendars EARLY, this is it. In addition to the stellar bucket of activities which support you in your “local” regions, there are big events emerging that will require that you actually enjoy a few more miles in your Porsche. And yes, you will probably want to travel beyond your own regional boundaries. If you are so inclined, you are going to need to do some advance planning. So here are the “biggies” in one document for your planning purposes….#1. Fiesta. Santa Fe, New Mexico. If you’ve never been to a Roadrunner region hosted Fiesta, you are missing a long weekend of fun. I was lucky in my first year as a zone rep to attend “Fiesta 50”. Yes, the region has a LOT of experience putting on this event. I’m listing it first on this recommended “to do” list, simply because registration opens before the other events, on or around January 1, 2020 (perhaps a week or two in the past, for many of you reading this). Fiesta takes place in downtown Santa Fe on Memorial Day weekend. Check in is on Thursday May 21 st and the weekend concludes on Sunday May 24 th . More information can be found at www.FiestaNewMexico.com. Registration will be through www.motorsportreg.com.#2. Treffen. Broadmoor, Colorado. While the “Fiesta” celebration mentioned above is a single region event attended by members from zone 9 and beyond, Treffen is a PCA nationally organized event, attended by members throughout the U.S. and even Canada. For those not yet familiar, there are two Treffens held each year. One in the spring and the other in the fall in order to avoid conflict with the Porsche Parade, held in the summer. For the 2020 Spring Treffen at the Broadmoor, PCA National has organized a leadership and volunteer team from the Alpine Mountain Region. Efforts have
been underway for close to one year now, to plan for a great event at the Broadmoor. Treffen events tend to be a bit more upscale than Porsche Parade, and are almost exclusively focused on socials (meals included in the price) and tours, with a free day in the middle to just enjoy the resort or surrounding area. Dates for the 2020 Spring Treffen are April 29-May 3. Registration opens on January 22 nd at 1pm MOUNTAIN time. Please be prompt, as Treffen events are designed for only 250-300 guests and often sell out in mere minutes. More details can be found at http:// treffen.pca.org .#3. Porsche Parade. La Quinta Resort, Palm Springs, California. This will be the 65 th annual Porsche Parade. It seldom happens that this event is within a one-day drive of every member of Zone 9. So I’d love to greet dozens of you from June 21 to June 27. I have to admit to being really jealous of my fellow zone reps from all over the southeast last year in Boca Raton, as I stood at a banquet reception surrounded by only a few members who drove from the west all the way to Florida. 2020 is my chance for payback. So help me out. If you haven’t been, Porsche Parade is a week-long Porsche fest chock full of social activities, tours and competitive events. Stay tuned to www.PCA.org and http://parade.pca.org for details about registration, which will open sometime in the first quarter of 2020!2020 will be my final year as your zone representative to the national PCA organization. I cannot imagine a more fun slate of “core” events to augment my regular visits to the regions. I hope to greet hundreds of you at these gatherings throughout the year.

2019 Roadrunnerholiday party!
S P E C I A L E V E N T R E C A P
The Roadrunner Region Holiday party took on a life of its own in December. A new venue, new buffet menu, new evening event made for a special year end celebration. Nearly 80 club members made it to the Santa Ana Star Hotel. Once there, a dedicated parking area for the Porsches made entry to the hotel a breeze. Inside we were treated to a new facility with a large holiday inspired ballroom. Among the new and tenured members was Rich Sanders, our Zone rep. Outgoing
President Vance Bass shared the master of ceremonies duties with incoming President George Watkins. A slideshow of Roadrunner people, cars and events played throughout the evening. The food and drinks were sumptuous. The service was efficient. A great evening. Thanks to Dennis Chamberlain for the photo montage, and especially to Patricia and Bob Blackwell for working with the hotel and putting together a special evening for everyone.

Service with the porSche touchInterview with Ben Dackiewicz Service Manager at Porsche of Albuquerque.
Story & Photos by Steve Waller
RR: I’m here at Porsche of Albuquerque with Service Manager Ben Dackiewicz. Ben, Dackiewicz is not a name you hear in these parts, where are you from?
BD: I was born and raised here, but my father is from Chicago. My mother was born and raised here. They met at a drive in movie theatre.
RR: How long have you been at Porsche of Albuquerque?
BD: About a year and a half. I manage Audi and Porsche.
RR: I know the service department has had some expansion, what is your current capacity?
BD: We have one full time Porsche service advisor, 3 full time technicians…one gold, one silver and one bronze. We have a new bronze technician from Colorado. With this staff our daily capacity is now 10-12 cars per day.
RR: Can you help us understand what the gold, silver and bronze designations mean?
BD: The levels depend on tenure, and the completion of instructor led training, web training and Porsche training modules. Everyone starts at the bottom and with time and training can move up. Everyone receives ongoing training on a quarterly basis.
RR: Does the assignment of a specific service job go to a tech with a certain level of service?
BD: The more routine service could be done by any of the techs. The more speciality service, like say a 918 would go to our gold level tech who has completed his training on this car. Our gold level tech is currently at Taycan school. The electric vehicle (EV) service is a whole new animal. The dealership has to invest in a brand new infrastructure to deal with the batteries. We have a build an outside facility separate from the dealership to manage these lithium ion batteries in case of a problem.
RR: For region members with water cooled cars what kind of expectation could they have for Porsche of Albuquerque to do their service?
BD: All club members get 10% off parts and service. We have a loaner fleet of cars for customers to use. We also have a shuttle and can order Uber or Lyft rides. And for routine and more intricate service we always only use Porsche approved parts. No aftermarket.
RR: For routine service that a customer schedules, what length of turn around time could they expect?
BD: For a customer to bring a car in the morning they could expect to have this service done in an hour and half to two hours. They can wait if they want. Adding the third technician has made a huge difference.
RR: If a region member were to call the dealership for service today what would be a typical wait time for an appointment?
BD: Right now we are only a couple days out. We don’t get a longer backlog until warmer weather when more folks get their sports cars out.
RR: Can your service department do any type of performance upgrades?
BD: We can offer installation of bolt on accessories. We can order the accessories directly, or the customer can bring us the parts. We don’t do reflashing of computers or tuning.
RR: Would your service department be able to perform a pre purchase inspection on almost any Porsche?
BD: Yes. In fact we did one recently for a customer who brought in a 2003 Turbo from an independent dealership. We helped the person understand what the issues were with this car so he was more educated as he continued his car search.
RR: Any closing thoughts?
BD: The dealership has tried to develop an new relationship with the club through events and outreach. Here in the parts and service department we would like to join that effort. Depending on what the club needs we can provide a resource.

Tech Tips from PedroTOP 10 LIST OF DON’TS
by Pedro P. Bonilla GCR PCA
I thought I’d put together a quick “top 10” but it hasn’t been quick at all. This has taken serious thinking, to put them in order and to pick the top 10.
No. 10 Don’t drive on worn tires
Make sure you regularly inspect your tires, and especially look at the inside edge which, because of the negative camber in our cars, tends to wear quicker.
Worn tires can be very dangerous especially when wet since they lose their capability of pumping out water and can easily hydroplane and lose adhesion to the road.
No. 9 Don’t drive with the wrong psi
It’s almost as bad as driving on worn tires. Make sure to check the tires’ pressure often and adjust accordingly. On new cars there’s a warning light to remind you, but on older cars you need to make it a habit.
The correct psi should be shown on a sticker inside one of the door frames.
No. 8 Don’t try to $ave using cheap gasoline
By using a lower and cheaper grade of gasoline than the one recommended by Porsche, you may think you’re saving money, but in the long run the car will consume more gallons per miles driven, throwing your “savings” out the window. The recommended gasoline grade is specified in your owner’s manual and/or next to the gas cap.
No. 7 Don’t put oil in your coolant
It’s very easy to mistake (if you’re color blind) the coolant cap and the oil cap especially in a Boxster or Cayman where they are side-by side.
The oil cap is always yellow and the coolant is blue.
People who remove both caps at once could easily make the mistake.
If you do mistakenly put oil in your coolant, the whole system needs to be flushed and replenished with new coolant.

Tech Tips from PedroTOP 10 LIST OF DON’TS
No. 6 Don’t put coolant in your oil
I know at least of half a dozen cases in the last couple of years where someone has put coolant in the oil or vice-versa.
If coolant is mixed with the oil by mistake, the oil needs to be drained, filled with fresh oil, run for a few minutes and drained/filled again.
No. 5 Don’t go over 5,000 mi. without an oil & filter change
The new synthetic oils can certainly go well over 5,000 miles without breaking down, but the only (cheap) way of “looking” inside your engine is by inspecting your oil filter and carefully looking to see if there are any metal particles embedded in the filter’s paper folds. At our shop we always cut and spread out each and every oil filter element that we replace and then we carefully
inspect it under a strong light source, with a magnifying glass and a magnet. A small amount of aluminum particles are normal and come from regular use. What you don’t want to see are shards, strands or large chips or any ferrous particle (attracted by the magnet) which are indications of unhealthy wear.
No. 4 Don’t go over 2 years without a brake flush
Because brake fluid is very hygroscopic (water absorbing) it will pull in water molecules from the air, through the brake lines and into the brake fluid.
As we all know, liquids are very hard to compress and that’s why brake fluid is a liquid. But when water mixes in as
soon as the fluid’s temperature reaches 212 ºF the water boils and becomes water vapor which is now a gas and is easily compressible. When this happens your brakes become mushy and the pedal fells like it wants to go down to the floorboard.
No. 3 Don’t go over the recommended service mileage
Porsche recommends specific service intervals for each particular car. Make sure you know your car’s service intervals and stick to them.
The services performed at each interval makes sure that your car runs in optimal condition and therefore saves you money in the long run.
No. 2 Don’t overlook an “idiot” light
First, make sure that they are all working by testing them regularly. If one of them is not working then when it needs to warn you of that issue you won’t know.
To test the “idiot” lights switch on the ignition and look at the dash lights.
They should all momentarily light up. If some don’t their bulbs may be burnt.
