    The MeaningMorallyMorally

Ramadan is not just a time for giving up food. The siyam is for the tongue, the hands, theeyes, the whole being. A fasting Muslimrefrains from all manners of vice and evil:arguing, backbiting, laziness, wastefulness, miserliness

    SpirituallySpiritually

We turn our attention to Ibadat: worshipthrough extra prayer, reciting the Quran, beingcharitable, and practicing self-restraint. It is amonth, above all, of spiritual and moralrenewal. The days are spent in constantremembrance of Allah, in consciousness of theHereafter rather than this temporaryexistence.

"O people! A great month has come over you; a blessed month; a monthin which is a night better than a thousandmonths; a month in which Allahhas made it compulsory upon you to fast by day, and voluntary to pray by

night. Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the

(optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward asperforming an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever dischargesan obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing

seventy obligations at any other time. It is the month ofpatience, andthe reward of patience is Heaven. It is the month ofcharity, and a month

in which a believer's sustenance is increased. Whoever gives food to a

fasting person to break his fast, shall have his sins forgiven, and he will besaved from the Fire of Hell, and he shall have the same reward as the

fasting person, without his reward being diminished at all."

The BenefitsHumility and CharityHumility and Charity

Every day there are millions around the world whogo hungrymen and women for whom poverty isan unforgiving reality, children who are sorelymalnourished, elderly who die of hunger.

Fasting for a month gives us just a taste of whatthey must go through. What better way to humbleourselves because of the blessings we have beengiven and open our hearts to charity?

    HealthHealth

Many scholars and doctors, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, point out that fasting in the mannerof Ramadan improves ones health. The body iscleansed of its impurities much like the soul iscleansed of its own.

    The BenefitsPurificationPurification

Every year, Muslims around the world beginRamadan with anticipation of purifying theirbodies and souls. This holy month is a time ofself-renewal, of prioritizing the spiritual overthe worldly.

For thirty days, many Muslims try to give uptheir bad habits. It is, in effect, a trainingperiod for the rest of the year.

It is related that during Ramadan, Allah SWTlocks up the Shayateen (Satan) so that we arefree of their temptations.

During this blessed month, a good deed isworth seventy times more than usual. On theother hand, such is Gods mercy that a baddeed is worth no more than usual.

    The BenefitsPurificationPurification

Our aim is to free ourselves of our carnal desiresand to establish taqwaconsciousness and loveof Godin our hearts.

The purpose of fasting is not to make us hungry andthirsty, or to deprive us some of our comfort and

conveniences. The real purpose of fasting is that welearn taqwa. Taqwa is highly emphasized in the Quranand SunnahTaqwa is Islam itself. It is the sum total ofall Islamic values and virtues. If one has taqwa one hasachieved everything. Taqwa is the consciousness ofAllah. It is to do ones best efforts to live by His

commands and to avoid His prohibitions. The Quranhas used the word taqwa to mean consciousness ofAllah, fear of Allah, worship of Allah, sincerity in faith, and avoidance of disobedience to Allah.Muzzamil H. Siddiqi

Every deed of the child of Adam

is for him except fasting; it is for

Me and I shall reward it. The (bad)breath of the mouth of a fasting

person is more pleasing to Allah

    than the perfume ofmusk.

    The ElementsLaylat-ul-QadrLaylat-ul-Qadr

The last one-third of Ramadanthat is, the last tendays, are the most blessed. During this period, theProphet (S) would exert himself even more indevotion and prayer through day and night.

Laylat-ul-Qadr, or the night of power, then, is themost auspicious of these days. It is believed that this

was the night that the whole Quran was sent downthe lowest heaven, and that this is when destinies aredecided.

The night of power is worth more than a thousandmonths of prayer, a night when the gates of heavenare opened; and the diligent servant who spends it in

    devotion is very blessed indeed.

Fasting is not (mere) refraining from food anddrink. Fasting (is refraining) from vain talk and

even indecency. And if one slanders you or

aggresses against you then say to them I amfasting, I am fasting.

    The BlessedMonth...

a time for unity with the worldwide

Muslim community, for humbledevotion and reverence, for

moderation and sacrifice, for freedomfrom the world and awareness of the

    Hereafter.

The Islamic fast which is the union ofasceticism and joy and even pleasure in

certain cases is the most natural andmost radical educational measure that has

ever been put into practice. It is equally

present in the kings palace and thepeasants hut, in a philosophers home anda workers home. Its greatest advantage is

    that it is really practiced.
