WE BEGIN WITHLOVE AND BEAUTY

We can end up anywhere, but we can only begin here: a woman and her child.

From Bellini’s Virgin and Child of the Italian Renaissance to Utamaro's 18th century Japanese print celebrating maternal connection, we can always be reminded that even though centuries and continents may separate us, we all begin at the same point. Explore more mysteries of our common consciousness throughout the museum’s twelve chapters.

PEACE AND KINDNESSThis edition of our award-winning magazine Go! Dubai/Abu Dhabi starts off by covering the holy month of Ramadan, the most impor-tant occasion in the Islamic calendar. It is a time of peace and kindness and understand-ing of human values and also a time to go soul searching within yourself and do good deeds. It is very important and a time of reflection and compassion also.

The understanding of what Ramadan stands for varies a lot among people living in other cultures. And I have asked myself many times if the rest of the non-muslim population world wide would take a month just to do good deeds and show compassion, the world would be a much more peaceful place. To give to the less fortunate, to help their community, to be understanding of other cultures and cus-

toms and just embrace the sacred message of forgiveness. All the things Ramadan stands for and beyond.

I feel blessed to have many friends that cel-ebrate Ramadan. I respect them fully as they fast and pray. For them it is important and for me too. With love, respect and peaceful minds we can go farther than anyone has ever done. So let us honor the power of the holy month of Ramadan and let it live on for the rest of our lives.#

Ramadan is the most important time of the year for Muslims, and is marked by peaceful self-reflection and increased devotion. Since Islam is Dubai’s official religion, the city trans-forms during the season, giving visitors a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience with its related activities and celebrations.

TAKE PART IN AN IFTARA significant part of Ramadan is the daily fast, with followers abstaining from all food and beverage during daylight hours. The meal to break the daily fast, the start of Iftar, is sig-nalled once the sun has completely set. The majority of popular restaurants in Dubai of-fer special Ramadan menus during the holy month.

SHARE A RAMADAN GREETINGGreet people with seasonal salutations: Ram-

adan Kareem or Ramadan Mubarak! Those who take part in the holy month are open about their beliefs and happy to answer po-lite questions about what the period means to them. If you are lucky to be invited by an Emirati to dine at their home for Iftar, it’s po-lite to accept. A wonderful way to experience authentic Emirati culture, take a box of dates as a gift. The sweet treats are a traditional way to break your fast.

DRESS APPROPRIATELYGuidelines for dressing in public areas are well established. Try to be especially considerate during Ramadan, and cover your shoulders and knees in loose-fitting clothing. For vis-itors, Ramadan is an ideal time to immerse yourself in the region’s rich culture. Plan a trip to the Dubai souks and markets to pick up local attire, including embroidered abayas

and hand-tailored kandooras, all traditional clothing in UAE.

MAKE YOUR DONATIONSA pillar of Ramadan is practising acts of kind-ness and grace. Join in and contribute towards the many fundraising and charitable events that are organised during the month. Many stores and restaurants offer the opportunity to add a small amount to your receipt, with all proceeds going directly to a government-ap-proved and licensed charity.

DON´T EAT, DRINK OR SMOKEAll visitors and residents are expected to re-frain from eating, drinking and chewing gum in public during the day, though pregnant women and young children are exempt. If you’re not fasting, take note of the restaurants open during the day that feature discreet din-

ing areas or look up home or hotel room delivery options. Be re-spectful at all times. Also refrain from smoking in public during the fasting hours.

LOUD MUSICIf you happen to listen to music, use headphones and keep the vol-ume low. Some lyrics may not be appropriate and may disturb those who are fasting. Most public areas avoid music being played during daylight hours.

ALMOST BUSINESS AS USUALMost restaurants, shops, companies and government agencies have reduced working hours during Ramadan, so be sure to check tim-ings before you venture out. While daylight hours are reduced, the majority of stores and restaurants extend their night hours to ac-knowledge schedules of those fasting.

The exact dates of Ramadan will be determined by the moon sighting closer to the holiday and is estimated to take place May 5 - June 4 this year.#

If you’re more competitive, there’s trophies for the top three fastest runners in each age category and in each distance. There are also spot prizes for runners, food and beverages available on site, and spectating is free. If you want to take part, pre-registration online is a must, in order to get your unique race number.#

IMAGES FROM HISTORY

Louvre Abu Dhabi presents two extensive and impor-tant exhibitions with a very high cultural value in that history is shown in the shape of fantastic paintings and the earliest photographs.

LOUVRE ABU DHABI’S FIRST PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITIONMore than 250 photos taken between 1842 and 1896, the earliest pho-tographs enlightening the past of the world, including the Middle East, with images from Saudi Arabia and Egypt, as well as some of the oldest images taken in India, the Philippines and elsewhere are on display at Louvre Abu Dhabi.

FIRST PHOTOGRAPHSThe exhibition also has a special connection to the Arabian Gulf and will feature the first photographs taken in the Middle East. Highlights will include the earliest photographic images of Saudi Arabia and Yem-en by Auguste Bartholdi, and the first photographic picture of Mecca by Egyptian photographer Sadiq Bey.

The show highlights historic photographs from the Philippines as well, including works by Pedro Picon, the creator of one of the earliest photographs in the country. An album from musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, which is presented in the exhibition, contains an early selection of studio portraits of Filipino subjects in visiting-card format.

ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGESAlongside the exhibition, Louvre Abu Dhabi will host a range of educa-tional and cultural activities around the topic of photography, includ-ing workshops, four film screenings, a conference and a cine-concert entitled “In the Land of the Head Hunters” on the exhibition’s opening

weekend. In this unique live concert, French musician Rodolphe Burg-er will perform his musical interpretation of one of the most beautiful silent-movies ever made. Mixing electronic and Native American mu-sic, Burger improvises the score for this rare 1914 movie masterpiece, a Native American version of Romeo and Juliet, where love leads to war and murder. 17TH CENTURY MASTERPIECESIt is the largest exhibition to date in the Mid-dle East of works by Dutch 17th-century mas-ters which also marks the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death. It constitutes the largest exhibition of Dutch Masters from the 17th century held in the Gulf region to date. This extraordinary assemblage of 95 paintings, drawings, and objects, including more than 20 works from across Rembrandt van Rijn’s career and by his workshop, surveys Rem-brandt’s artistic journey in 17th-century Leid-en and Amsterdam, as well as his relationships with rivals and peers including Jan Lievens, Ferdinand Bol, Carel Fabritius, Gerrit Dou, Frans van Mieris, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer.

HIGHLIGHTSAmong the many highlights in the exhibition are two works by Vermeer, “The Lacemaker” (Musée du Louvre) and “Young Woman Seat-ed at a Virginal” (The Leiden Collection), that were painted on canvas cut from the same

bolt. In the exhibition, these have been hung side by side for what is thought to be the first time in 300 years.

THE DUTCH GOLDEN AGE It was a brief period during the 17th century when the Dutch Republic, newly independent from the Spanish Crown, established itself as a world leader in trade, science, and the arts, and was regarded as the most prosperous state in Europe. Worldwide trade, driven by the Dutch East India Company and Dutch West India Company, gave the Netherlands (the coastal region of northwest Europe) an im-portant advantage throughout Europe and the world. Rembrandt and Vermeer established themselves at the forefront of a new artistic movement characterized by a deep interest in humanity and daily life.

FROM LEIDEN TO AMSTERDAMIn this context, the exhibition explores the evolution of Rembrandt’s career starting in

his native Leiden where he created his early famed series of allegorical paintings of the Senses. These works demonstrate the artist’s youthful ingenuity and experimentation with expression, composition and colour. Paintings created later in Amsterdam are also on dis-play, including sensitively rendered portraits, the renowned “Self-Portrait with Shaded Eyes”, and “Minerva in Her Study”, his mon-umental history painting of the goddess (both from The Leiden Collection). These works are displayed alongside paintings by other mas-ters from Rembrandt’s artistic circle, illustrat-ing the influence that this remarkable group of artists had on each other’s work.#

Practiced for thousands of years, the sport of falconry provides a proud link to a he-ritage that embodies nobility, courage and conservation

SPORT OF THE SKIES

For 4,000 years, Bedouin in the United Arab Emirates and wider Arabian Penin-sula practiced falconry as an important form of hunting in a resource-scarce land. Its role in society, however, has changed over time, and today it is one of the UAE’s most honoured tradition-al sports.

Falconry’s revered status derives from the sense of courage, honour and nobility, prized traditional Arab values, that are associated with the sport, as well as its links to nature conservation, respect for animals and the comradery among falcon-ers.

“Falconry allows our children to enjoy the spell of the desert, imbuing them with the virtues of pa-tience and fortitude, willpower and companionship, values that are just as important today, as they have been for generations,” says His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Emirates Falconers’ Club.#

Discover old Dubai in the city’s top souks. Lavish gold jewellery, hand-woven fabrics, traditional oud fragrances and cheap knickknacks – you’ll find it all in the exciting souks of Dubai. While Dubai’s reputation is as a thriving modern city, traditional Arabian markets are still a crucial part of daily life and trade. A wander through one of the city’s bustling souks is an essential experience for both visitors and locals.

SOUKSOUR FAVOURITE...

GOLD SOUK54 Al Khor St | Deira, near Gold Center

Building, Dubai

Fittingly for Dubai, “the city of gold”, the Gold Souk is a must-see for serious precious metal traders, couples looking for a statement jewellery piece, or visitors hunting for that special memento of their Dubai stay. The wide passageways are alive with tradesmen and artists trained in the craft of designing jewellery, from bespoke pieces and alluring Arabic designs with prices that aren’t set in stone.

SPICE SOUKSikkat Al Khail Road | Al Ras, Dubai

A close neighbour to the Gold Souk, follow your nose to the Spice Souk to be instantly transported to the hustle and bustle of a vibrant trading floor. With top chefs, home cooks and savvy expats all swearing by their personal picks among the Spice Souk’s colourful sacks of spices, herbs, rice and fruit, the market hall is a must-visit for those wanting to explore Dubai’s exotic side. Score high-quality saffron strands at local prices, taste fresh A-grade and sun dried organic dates and stock up on exotic spices, dried fruits, candied nuts, and locally-blended teas. You are sure to discover a new flavour – and yes, you can sample before you buy.

PERFUME SOUKSikkat al Khali Road, Dubai

Obsessed by scent? Follow the road up from the Gold and Spice Souks, and you’ll find yourself in Deira’s Perfume Souk on Sikkat Al Khali Street. Dealing in everything scented, from pure perfume to essential oils, incense sticks and the exotic traditional oud, the traditional trading spot has beautiful-ly-fragranced options for all. Buy rich oils in bulk, stored in wholesale-sized flagons, or opt for the more portable ornate vials designed for those who like to dab perfume on pulse points. Ask for a crash-course in oud - many vendors will be proud to explain the diffe-rences in this ancient fragrant resin. Have a personal fragrance created and bottled by experienced perfumers.

TEXTILE SOUK57 Ali Bin Abi Talib Street, Dubai

On the Bur Dubai side of the Creek you’ll discover the colourful Textile Souk. A favou-rite haunt of the city’s in-demand tailors and emerging fashion designers, the Souk’s vast array of shops are crowded with rolls of fa-brics, including fine silks, airy cottons, exotic palm frond weaves, and dazzling sari fabrics. Choose from your favourite materials and pop into one of the surrounding tailors to be measured for a dress, abaya (traditional wo-menswear), kandoura (traditional menswear) or suit made to your design. Most can turn around orders in mere days.

SOUK MADINATAl Sufouh Road, Dubai

Nestled between the five-star Mina A’Salam and Al Qasr hotels, Souk Madinat Jumeirah is for those who want to skip the haggling but enjoy the thrill of shopping souk-style. Wan-der the labyrinth of narrow lanes in search of fun souvenirs, fine art and sculptures, local and international design houses, and take in a show at the atmospheric Madinat Theatre. There’s an array of restaurants to choose from any time of day, with visitors able to dine in Levant cafes or fine-dining restaurants - many with front-row views of the waterways that meander through the complex. Comple-te your visit with a traditional abra ride and drink in the views of the icon Burj Al Arab.

SOUK AL BAHARSheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard,

Downtown Dubai

Just a short and scenic stroll over the foot-bridge that arches across Burj Lake at the foot of the towering Burj Khalifa and beside The Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar is a modern take on a traditional Arabian marketplace. Here, you can stock up on Bateel dates, incense cones, jewellery, abayas, brass lamps, and fresh Arabic pastries studded with nuts and drizzled with honey. Upstairs, with its wi-de-slung windows, is one of the best vantage points from which to enjoy a meal while watching the evening light shows at The Dubai Fountain.
