RAM Spreaders designs, manufactures and sells container lifting spreaders for the loading and unloading of cargo containers

as well as patented revolver spreaders for containerized bulk commodities handling.

RAM Spreaders’ ancestral roots began when Mr. Robert A. Mills, expanded his blacksmith family business in England and ventured into container handling equipment in the 1970s. The name RAM represents the initials  of Mr. Robert A. Mills whilst being  synonymous with strength, power and reliability.

In 1992, NSL Engineering (a subsidiary of NSL Ltd) acquired RAM Spreaders as part of its business diversification. And in May 2015, RAM Spreaders business was merged with the grab business of Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG (one of the world’s leading cargo grab manufacturers and the leading shipboard crane grab builder) under a joint venture arrangement. The merger led to the formation of one of the world’s leading lifting accessories supplier and global market leader in both bulk cargo and containers handling industries.

Over the years, RAM Spreaders has successfully established itself as a reputable and preferred brand name in the container handling industry globally through strategic market penetration and innovative product development. While RAM Spreaders is customer-centric, it is also a firm believer of innovation.

It leverages on the decades of industrial experience and works closely with ports and terminal operators to develop more productive and cost-effective equipment that meet their changing needs. In this way, it has expanded its product range over time. Currently, it has about 15 active product groups with close to 100 model types.

The spreaders RAM offers comprise those that can be mounted onto ship-to-shore cranes, yard stacking cranes, jib cranes, mobile harbor cranes and front loaders. The different models have features and capabilities that include fixed or telescopic operation, single or twin or even quad-lift, over-height, hook beams, rotators and headblocks.

In recent years, RAM Spreaders took innovation to a new high with the introduction of its SingFlex Headblock. The product allows loading and unloading operations to be carried out with two twin-lift spreaders working simultaneously on a single hoist crane application. It also has the flexibility to switch from single-spreader mode (which can lift 1x20ft, 1x40ft, 1x45ft or 2x20ft containers) to twin-spreader mode (which can lift 4x20ft or 2x40ft containers) in less than three minutes. The rapid fully automated change-over function allows the crane operator to plan and select the most appropriate mode for his work schedule. In addition, the SingFlex Headblock has the sophisticated capability that allows the operator to adjust the gap, skew the angle and perform horizontal offset of containers for accurate and efficient container placement at quayside, thereby greatly improving the productivity of ports and terminals.

As with any Research and Development (R&D) initiative, each of our successful product innovation, development and further improvement takes many years of R&D efforts. Presently, RAM Spreaders is the proud proprietary owner of 25 world-wide patents.

RAM Spreaders has its manufacturing facilities in China, service and repair centers in Singapore, and sales and aftersales service support throughout Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa and South America. As its spreaders are present in more than 65 countries spread across the globe, it requires this extensive network to enable RAM Spreaders to reach and serve its customers promptly and adequately.

In the latest Financial Year - 2016, RAM Spreaders in Singapore achieved a third-party revenue of about S$52m, supported by a dedicated team of about 70 staff.

Being named as one of SME100 winners this year is a great honour. As the quote says, “recognition is the greatest motivator”. Thus, this award will serve not just as recognition of what we have achieved so far but also a motivator for RAM Spreaders to aim higher and achieve greater height in the future.
