Dear Friends,

So, I’m not going on sabbatical this year. I’m trying to arrange it for the second half of 2021. The restrictions imposed by the

epidemic have made it imprudent and unreasonable to press forward with foreign travel and study at this time. So, I’m read-

ing the signs of the times and staying home. Quite frankly, I just can’t imagine leaving my dear people at a time like this. I was

pretty exhausted before the pandemic, and was counting down the days to this incredible adventure. Trying to keep every-

thing going during this insane time has been exhausting for me. I can only imagine what it has been like for you, too. But

we’re in this together, and I am grateful that, if we have to go through this, we can at least do it within the context of such a

beautiful parish community.

During the lockdown, I was able to pursue some academic study that I would not have gotten to do otherwise. I have al-

ways been fascinated by the encounter of Christ and the Gospel with different cultures, languages and world religions. I

have spent time studying Arabic and Turkish in a very informal way, and reading about the history of the Middle East, Islamic

theology and law, and dialogue between Muslims and Christians. It has really expanded my horizons and helped me think

about so many things in a new way. One of the things that I am trying to understand is how Christianity has virtually disap-

peared in the region of its birth, and what evangelization and mission look like now and has looked like over the centuries in

these areas. With the fastest growing creedal adherence in the US becoming no religion at all, we have to think intelligently

through how we go about the Church’s mission. What works and what doesn’t? Where does human initiative come in,

and what is the free gift of the Spirit?

There is a wealth of Christian theology, spirituality and apologetics written in Arabic and Syriac which have not been translat-

ed or studied deeply in the West. Many Christians have kept their faith in a hostile environment for centuries. I was deeply

impressed by a documentary on how Christians were studying Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke, in Iraq and Syria, even as

bombs fell all around them, and even as they became refugees. How many Catholics would see the value of learning Latin,

their language, or the Greek and Hebrew of the Scriptures, as they were being persecuted for their faith? There are a lot of

heroic stories that may never be told. But just as we need to recount and retell the stories of martyrs from ancient Rome

or Reformation England, we also need to learn the stories of Christians under siege. We need their example and courage

now more than ever.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration resumed on the

Feast of the Sacred Heart! Please consider adopting

an hour or become a substitute. For the safety of

our adorers, we’re limiting the volume of adorers at

one time to 4 people, unless otherwise pre-arranged

with Lisa Buss. Disinfectant spray is in the back of

the chapel for each adorer to spray down what has

been touched. And, adorers are encouraged to con-

sider wearing a mask. Contact Lisa Buss

at [email protected] or call

864.508.7123 with questions!

• Adorers are reminded to receive the code di-

rectly from Lisa Buss. Do not expect those inside

the Chapel to interrupt their prayers to open/

close the door. This is a safety risk for adorers.

• Hours in need of adorers: • 10a Sundays,

• 8p Mondays,

• 11p Tuesdays,

• 2p Wednesdays,

• 12a & 3p Thursdays and

• 11a, 1p & 4p Saturdays

If you are unable to receive Holy Communion for whatever reason, make a Spiritual Communion by reciting the following:

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacra-ment. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart, as though You have al-ready come. I embrace You and unite myself entirely to

You; never permit me to be separated from You.

the bags in August. Instead, we ask that you bring

non-perishable items and drop them off in the desig-

nated brown bin in the Narthex.

The Assumption of Mary is 15 August and falls on a

Saturday this year. Because it falls on Saturday it is

not obligatory (the dispensation applies, regardless).

We will still have two Masses to commemorate the

death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heav-

en: EF Mass 8a, OF Mass 9a

We will not be having Blessing of Herbs this year.

Here at Prince of Peace we pray for many holy

priests to come forth from our ranks, particular-

ly for service in the Diocese of Charleston. Cur-

rently we have one man, Sebastian Barbosa, who is

entering Second Theology. It is always appropriate

to send care packages, gifts and letters to our semi-

narians. Because they are not allowed to work dur-

ing their studies or the summers, and receive a very

modest stipend from the diocese, they often count

on the kindness of the people of our diocese to as-

sist them. Show that you care for the seminarians

Celebrating the Liturgical Calendar at Home

26 July: Feast Day of Saints Anne and Joachim. Saints Anne and Joachim are honored by the church as

the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus. Not much is known about these two

special grandparents; what we do know about them comes to us through tradition. We believe that they

were respected members of the Jewish community, and that they wanted to become parents so much that

Joachim went into the desert to fast and pray for this intention. It is said that an angel told them they

would soon have a daughter who would become famous throughout the world. Months later, Mary, our

Blessed Mother, was born. When Mary was three years old, Anne and Joachim took her to the temple in

Jerusalem to consecrate her for service to the Lord. We call this celebration the “Presentation of the Virgin

Mary.” We honor Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anne, as saints who brought Mary up to be the most worthy

Mother of God. It was Anne and Joachim who taught Mary to have faith in God and who showed Mary the

example of godly parenting. Anne and Joachim’s love for one another and for Mary is an example of how

God calls us to live. Today, the church honors the grandparents of Jesus. This is the perfect reminder for us

to honor our own grandparents and to thank them for the blessings they have passed down to us.

Some ways to celebrate the feast of Saints Anne and Joachim at home:• If possible, invite grandparents over for dinner. Or, drop off a meal or give grandparents a phone call.

• Send a card in the mail thanking all the grandparents in your life for their love and support.

• Check in on an elderly neighbor or friend and see if they are in need of any help: pick up groceries, fix

something in their home, lend a listening ear, etc.

• Most importantly, use this feast day as a reminder to pray for the grandparents in your life and those who

have no one to pray for them. Don’t forget to pray for the souls of the parents and grandparents who

have gone before us.

Every Catholic in the world must belong to a parish. Parishes are either territorial, meaning that they en-

compass the souls living in a defined geographical area: or personal, meaning that certain persons register in a

parish that has a certain charism to which they are led. Prince of Peace is a territorial parish, but people

both within the territory (Taylors) and outside of the territory indicate that they want to be members of our

spiritual family by registering with an appropriate form. Because a pastor has certain rights vis-a-vis his flock,

he cannot provide certain elements of pastoral care to some souls without prejudicing the rights of other

pastors. Registration in a place where many people are not Catholics gives some kind of formal recogni-

tion that one finds a spiritual home in a certain parish and can expect spiritual care from that parish's clergy.

In addition to registering in a parish, Catholics have a grave obligation under pain of mortal sin to provide for

the needs of the parish to the extent that they are able. Regular Mass attendance and giving are ordinarily

objectively verified using the envelope system, dropping your offering in a special envelope provided by the

parish. It is not a perfect system, and some sad souls like to try to game the system, but it has become local

custom in the United States. Individual parishes each have different criteria for distinguishing between an ac-

tive and an inactive parishioner. Ordinarily, at Prince of Peace, a household is marked inactive if there is no

discernible activity trackable by the parish office. Some parishioners who find themselves in homebound situ-

ations or temporary financial crises ask to remain listed as active parishioners. Those who do not are

marked as inactive parishioners.

Active Parishioner Status

continued from previous page...Parishioner status does not affect who can come to Mass, confession or anointing of the sick, who can be

buried from the parish, participate in parish activities and programs, and a whole host of activities. Only reg-

istered, active and contributing parishioners, however, may have their child baptized or confirmed in the

parish, may receive the parishioner rate or financial aid at the parish school, or be married in the parish.

During this global health pandemic, however, ascertaining who is an active parishioner according to the usual

criteria is not as clear cut as it once was. The Bishop has dispensed us from Mass, and many people would

be there if they could, but are in the danger zone for contracting the virus. Also, there are many people

who have all of a sudden found themselves in very different financial situations than before, and cannot con-

tribute at the level they were before. Remember that the normal expectations for regular, active and con-

tributing parishioner status are a reasonable minimum for a practicing Catholic to be coherently called

so. But these are not normal times, and the Church does not seek to burden her children unduly at such a

stressful time.

Therefore, I would like to enact the following policy for the July 2020-July 2021 Fiscal Year:

In order to be considered an active parishioner for the purpose of: having children baptized or confirmed in the par-

ish, receiving the parishioner rate or financial aid at the school, or to be married in the parish, these are the require-

ments:

1. be registered in the parish with the proper forms and not be registered in any other parish

2. attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation in the parish when and if you find it reasonable to do so

and you would not be embarrassed to stand up in front of Jesus and explain why you're not at Mass

3. use the envelope system or some form of Tithely, WeShare or EFT to continue to support the church as sacrificially

as you are able

4. communicate in writing to the pastor if there is a reason why you want to be continue to be considered active if

number 3 is impossible (you don't even have to state the reason, just let him know there is a reason)

For this fiscal year, the envelope system will not be used to track attendance, since for much of this time, the obliga-

tion is not in effect and there are many who will be unable to come to Mass, but who consider Prince of Peace their spiritual home and are still united with us in prayer and other means of support. No one will be automatically inacti-

vated during FY 2020-1 unless they die, move out of the county, register in another parish or request to be inactivat-

ed.

I want this policy to be clear, so that there are no surprises. We intend in July 2021 to revert to our previ-

ous policies for determining active parishioner status, unless our review of it at that time makes an exten-

sion of the present policy necessary. We don't want anyone to be marked inactive from parish life during

this year merely because they made a prayerful and prudent discernment not to come to Mass or because

their financial situation was such that regular and trackable support of the parish was impossible.

Likewise, many of the normal expectations that we have for religious education, sacramental preparation

and participation in the rites and ceremonies of the Church, will need to be re-envisioned for the greater

good of souls during this time. Any temporary adjustments in those policies will be communicated as neces-

sary, and are always done with a view to a reasonable engagement with the life of the Church during a very

stressful time for everyone.

SAFE Grants

In a Press Conference on 20 July, Governor

McMaster announced $32M will be allocated

to parents choosing private schools for their

child(ren). Up to 5,000 students will receive

funding (first come, first serve). Sign up for

info and important application up-

dates: https://www.mysceducation.org/

olic School, please schedule here or call

Fr Smith outlined the fundamental principles:

1. Children do not belong to the State.

2. Parents are the primary educators of their

children, not the State, and as such, have the

right to educate their children accordingly.

3. Public schools because of their structure,

during this pandemic are not going to be able

to educate children the way many parents

desire them to be educated at this time, and

vouchers give flexibility for choice,

4. Catholic schools spend far less money on

each child’s education and provide far greater

results. A significantly higher portion of mon-

ey poured into Catholic schools is spent on

actual education instead of educational bu-

reaucracy.

5. Choice in education actually gives students more equal opportunities in life, not fewer.
