Greetings and a warm welcome to our veryfirst issue of the Year - 2014! Januarymarks the dawning of the New Year 2014

and there are still achievements to be unwrapped.2013 was quite a promising year for us to start‘Scaling up’ multi-dimensionally in terms of reputa-tion, rewards, fostering novel associations world-wide, building new projects, breakthroughs, andlearnings in order to empower ourselves to imple-ment mission-driven initiatives, much more effi-ciently.

ARCH organized the 41st India Interior Designday on the 21stDec.13 in Jaipur with the JaipurRegional Chapter of the apex body of the profes-sion of interior design in the country - Institute ofIndian Interior Designers (IIID). It brought togetherpeople contributing to the profession of InteriorDesign in Jaipur and gave our students an opportu-nity of meeting & talking to the leading architectsand getting practical insights into design.

Keeping with the vision of the institution of help-ing unleash natural potential we got ten of ourpromising fashion design students empanelledwith the Khadi & Village Industries Board to partic-ipate in the ‘Khadi Garment Design Competition -2013’ that offers a unique opportunity to thebudding Designers to design & showcase theirproducts with their Profile/ Tag across the countryat renowned Khadi Retail Stores!

Likewise, with an aim to empower its human re-sources, ARCH ensured that its entire team of pro-fessionals attended the thought provokinginspiring session organized by the CII on ‘Scaling-up’ by Subroto Bagchi (an Indian entrepreneurand business leader), at the Hotel Clarks Amer,Jaipur. Mr. Bagchi covered the concept of scalingup profoundly, relating it to legions of organiza-tions.

In Dec.2013, Vital Voices Lead Fellowship’sSouth-to-South Exchange Programme was held inKampala, capital of Uganda, Africa. Fifty extraordi-nary women leaders from 24 countries across theglobe participated in the annual event, which tookplace on the picturesque shores of Lake Victoria.Being a Lead Fellow in the program, I travelled toAfrica to represent the country in this global event.

While, former collaborations have started yield-ing positive results, ARCH in the year 2014 is nowkeenly looking at new strategic linkages globallywith its prospective partners, with much more en-thusiasm, energy & vigour.

Essential item in women's wardrobe today is theKurta top, as simple as it can be it stands from therest because of its beaded detail. The Nehru jacket,born in the 1940s and remarketed in the 1960sthanks to The Beatles, is still an acclaimed collar stylein shirts, coats and jackets.

Interior DesignFAUx-FINISH: A decorative technique in whichpaint or stain is applied to a surface to simulateanother material such as wood, marble, or granite.

FRENCH-WIRED:A lamp in whichthe power cordconnects directly

to the light socket,rather than being hid-den in the base of the

lamp.

Graphic DesignFoCAL PoINT: A focal point is the most importantpart of the page or the part of the page that is themost dominant. Good design uses a focal point tocreate a page that has a purpose. The focal pointof the page should be the element that is most im-portant on the page. It gives the eye a place to restand allows the viewer to determine the point of apage very quickly.

Textile DesignFASTNESS: The Property of resistance to anagency named (e.g., Washing, Light, Rubbing,Crocking, Gas-fumes).on the standard scale, Five Grades are usually rec-ognized, from 5, signifying unaffected, to 1,grossly changed. For lightfastness, eight gradesare used, 8 representing the highest degree offastness.

FLoCK PRINTING : A Method of fabric ornamen-tation in which adhesive is printed on and thenfinely chopped fibres are applied all over bymeans of dusting-on, an air-blast, or electrostaticattraction. The fibres adhere only to the printedareas and are removed from the unprinted areasby mechanical action.

Jewellery DesignFACETS: Gemstones commonly have facets cutinto them in order to improve their appearance byallowing them to reflect light. of the hundreds offacet arrangements that have been used, the mostfamous is probably the round brilliant cut, usedfor diamond and many colored gemstones.

FAD: A desirable trend characterized with lots of en-thusiasm and energy over a short period of time. Afad is something that may become very popular overa short amount of time. An example can be a hairstyleor clothing fad. The style is hot one day but not thenext day.

For Position only (FPo): on a mechanical, a writ-ten designation applied to a low-resolution or in-ferior-quality image (such as a xerox of aphotograph or line art) to indicate that the image(as seen) has only been added to the mechanical

Athought provoking session by SubrotoBagchi on ‘Scaling-up’ was held in Jaipur.A persona teaches one to school one’s

thoughts and strive towards scaling up multi-di-mensionally. The event covered the concept of scal-ing up multi-dimentionally. Mr. Bagchi describedthe six principles of scaling up defining each prin-ciple, with examples giving insights on companieswho have scaled up enormously in a short span oftime. As per the first principle, one has to be com-fortable with the idea of ‘scaling up’. He said, ‘youhave to be first clear in your mind what exactly youwant, to realize your goal completely.’ The secondprinciple is about scaling business by getting largedeals, about the need to stay away from certaincustomer engagements and business models thatcould prevent growth and the subject of mergersand acquisitions that invariably engages everyoneat some time or the other. He emphasized on scal-ing up intellect as third principle, as the enterpriseis an intellect game. The capacity to get to the nextlevel often depends on a leader’s ability to augmentthe organizational intellect by tapping into externalexpertise. He explained the importance of scalingreputation as fourth principle. Reputation is a formof capital and growing it right, beyond just goodpublic relations, helps an organization get to thenext level. Scaling people is the fifth principle, asone’s success is all about team’s success. As sixthprinciple, he advised to be prepared for adversity.To fight adversity, we need to focus on doing ordi-nary things extraordinarily well when extraordi-nary events overtake the enterprise. Though thesession was aimed at SMEs and start-ups one canintrospect and relate it with self development aswell. ‘The idea of scaling up is not only for businessbut also applies to an institution or any individual.It underlines and exemplifies the mistaking of scal-ing up with growth’. The session at every step gaveall of us food for thought and questioned our be-liefs. It provoked the listeners to plunge and findout that “inflection point” in ourselves or in our or-ganization to enable us to scale up multi-dimen-sionally instead of a unidimensional growth. onecan delve deeper and deeper in finding out the truemeaning of Scaling up.

Subroto Bagchi is an Indian entrepreneur andbusiness leader. He is best known for co-found-ing Mindtree Ltd and for being a business au-thor. He started his work life as a clerk in theIndustries Department of the government ofOdisha after giving up his post graduate studies.After a year of working there, he qualified to be amanagement trainee in DCM in 1977 where heworked for the ensuing 5 years. In 1981, he en-tered the computer industry and worked for anumber of computer companies between 1981and 1999 in various functions like sales, market-ing and operations. His longest stint was atWipro where he became the chief executive ofWipro’s Global R&D before working for Chair-man Azim Premji as corporate vice president,Mission Quality. He left Wipro in 1998 to join Lu-cent Technologies. He left Lucent a year after toco-found Mindtree in 1999 along with 9 otherco-founders. Mindtree is a $ 435 million, GlobalIT Solutions Company with 11000 people at theend of fiscal year 2012-13. It is listed at the Na-tional Stock Exchange and the Bombay StockExchange in India. Along the way, Bagchi wrotebusiness bestsellers such as The High Perform-ance Entrepreneur, Go Kiss the World, The Pro-fessional, MBA at 16, The ProfessionalCompanion and The Elephant Catchers.Hisbooks have been translated into several lan-guages like Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada,Tamil, Korean and Chinese. Bagchi periodicallywrites a column titled Zen Garden for ForbesIndia for which he has interviewed people likethe Dalai Lama, Aamir Khan, Cherie Blair andmany noted Indian entrepreneurs.

CREATIVE SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP Chr-cha III

Chr-cha is an exchange platformand a monthly event organizedby the Arch Academy of Design.

It attracts people from different walksof life—Designers, Design Entrepre-neurs, Models, Artists, Photographers,Media persons, Government officials,NGo/ Civil Society representatives, Ed-ucators, Social workers and offers acommon platform to discuss viewpoints and opinions on thought pro-voking and interesting topics over teaand snacks. In this series, the third Chr-cha on the topic “Creative Social Entre-preneurship” was held on 29th Nov2013. Mr Raj Jani who has worked fora long time in for-profit and not-for-profit sectors in India and Africa wasthe moderator for this event.

Mr. Jani introduced the theme of thediscussion - “Creative Social Entrepre-neurship” and set the ball rolling withthe screening of two movies - ‘FINo’and ‘Magic Bus’. FINo (Financial Inclu-sion Network and operation), like anyother bank, enables marginalized com-munities to save, borrow and use finan-cial services. Just that FINo is not abank and its clientele is not the kind ofpeople who use auto teller machinekiosks. The company’s clients are rick-

shaw pullers, maids, paan walahs,chauffeurs, casual labourers and otherodd-jobbers who barely manage to ekeout a living. The other movie was about‘Magic Bus’, an NGo believing in Sportsfor Development. If a slum child wastaken away from the squalor of his/herimmediate environment to a mountainor sports pitch, it meant the creation ofa learning environment unparalleled inthe child’s life. Sport is something thatis close to young peoples’ hearts andthrough its inherent attributes of activeparticipation, energy, empowermentand social inclusion it provides an idealplatform for working with youth andhelping them recognize their power

and potential. It was the thought of a‘vehicle’ picking children up and takingthem on a fantastic journey that gavebirth to the name magic bus.

The participants started sharing theirviews on the theme. Mr Vikram Joshi,a leading Exporter and a regular partic-ipant of Chr-cha, said that creativityhas many aspects; we take whicheverone encourages us the most and con-tinue working on that. The name of‘Kala Raksha’ was cited as an exampleby the participants. The first designschool to be run largely by local artisancommunities, Kala Raksha is an ex-traordinary non-governmental organi-zation, situated in the deserts of Kutchin Western Gujarat. The founder ofKala Raksha- Ms. Judy Frater was bornin the United States and holds Mastersdegrees from the University of Wash-ington and the University of Minnesota.Wishing to do something to preservetraditional Indian craft, Judy togetherwith local embroiders, founded theKala Raksha Trust in 1993. Amongst along list of honours, Judy, a Fulbrightand Ford Foundation Fellow, receivedan Ashoka Foundation Fellowship in2003 for establishing the Kala RakshaVidhyalaya. She won the Sir MishaBlack Award in 2009 for DistinguishedServices to Design Education. And in2011, she received the Crafts Councilof India Kamala award for service tothe field of crafts.

Another participant Ms. Sonal Chi-transhi, Fashion Designer from NIFT &Design Manager of Kilol, Jaipur, sharedher view that social entrepreneurshipshould be the vision of a leader and itshould be competitive. Mr. ChintanBakshi, CEo of Startup oasis, a fundingorganization, laid emphasis on innova-tion in Social Entrepreneurship. He saidthat it is important to recognize theneed of the people and come up withinnovative solutions. Mr. Amit Gehlot,Assistant Professor at Pearl Academy

of Design, cautioned everybody andsaid that we should earn money only tofulfil our requirement, not just to as-semble wealth. Ms Archana Surana,Founder & Director of Arch Academyof Design linked money with powerand emphasized the empowering of in-dividuals. She said that everybodyshould be empowered and for that theconcept of Creative Social Entrepre-neurship is very relevant and impor-tant. The example of AMUL was citedin this regard. Amul, ventured with asmall idea, now has become a revolu-tionary in the area of social entrepre-neurship where all stakeholders havebeen empowered.

22nd December in India every year iscelebrated as India interior DesignDay. This year Jaipur celebrated itsIndia Interior Design Day with JaipurRegional Chapter apex body organ-ized by Institute of Indian Interior De-

signers and Arch Academy of Design on 21stDecember 2013. Institute of Indian Interior Design-ers was headed by its Chairperson Sanjay Kothari &Secretary Anshuman Sharma and Arch Academy ofDesign was represented by its Founder Director MsArchana Surana.

It was a day long event where students from differ-ent architecture institutes participated and show-cased their work. The event also had sessions byeminent Interior designers and different people asso-ciated with interior design and the architecture in-dustry. Students from various colleges like ArchAcademy of Design, IICD, Khaitan Polytechnique,Poornima University, Amity University were amongthe major participants of the event. The event hadpractical technical sessions by senior architects fromthe country like Sanjay Kothari, Rajendra Puri etc.

Major attractions of the India Interior Design Daywere sessions on Electrical wiring and fittings, Bath-room Solutions, Plumbing & Sanitary products, Fur-nishings, Paints & Textures, stone trends etc. alongwith the product display by the vendors from thesame field that provided students with an opportu-nity to gain knowledge of the market trends, require-ments, challenges and their solutions.

Addressing the students Dheeraj Jahamriya, MD‘Stone Trends’ said that protecting the stone is as im-portant as choosing your favorite stone. He sharedgeneral problems and solutions of the stones used forresidential purpose. Further adding to this he said,‘soil accumulation, bleaching, rusting, oil stains etc.are the common residential stone problems that per-sists’. Acknowledging recently available technologyhe suggested few possible solutions like Flurochem-ical treatment & Sealing methodology for water ab-sorption problem.

The event proceeded with a street play “Dastak” bythe Asmita Theatre Group. This was directed by anactor, trainer, social activist, street theatre workerand great story teller, Mr. Arvind Gaur. The playhelped increase the awareness of the audience aboutatrocities against women.

interior design Vendors shared their expertise and familiarized students with the current trends in the market. Panelists discussed projects they had worked on and

motivated students

Celebration

Interesting fact about the play group was that ithas been a part of Bollywood Movie ‘Ranjhana’.After a short break, the event resumed with paneldiscussion with panelists Mr. Bains (Rtd. DGP), Mr.Neeraj Kedia, Ms Manjari Mahajani, Ms ArchanaSurana, Ms Sheetal Bharti, Dr. Setia, Mr ManojGupta, Mr Bobby Vijaykar, Ms Ritu Khandelwalwith Dhruv Gupta as moderator. optimising theopportunity, students raised their queries in con-text to the growing industry, its demand and chal-lenges faced by a beginner to which panelistsresponded and shared their experience on percep-tion, aesthetics & other technical aspects. Moder-ator Mr. Dhruv Gupta spoke about ergonomics toexplain that the design of a building must suit thebelief and tradition of the place. Here, he took anexample of how a Christian Bride wears a whitedress at her wedding whereas wearing a whitesaari depicts sorrow in Hinduism. Panelist MsArchana Surana, Founder & Director, Arch Acad-emy spoke about the differences between Jaipurand Lucknow Gharana. Her opinions threw light onthe Living Style & standards of Raja, Maharaja andMughal era, about how people are now acceptingnew trends and are ready to shell out money forgetting the perfect style.

Adding a surprise element in the day long cele-bration, there were on-the-spot competitions forthe design students on various topics e.g. innova-tive Kitchen Ideas. The competition was judged byarchitect Rashmi Gupta who later guided the stu-dents on how to work towards betterment. Also,the projects displayed by students from variousinstitutes and universities were critically analyzedand praised. The special session of the entire eventwas screening of the movie “I M Pei- First PersonSingular” on a famous Chinese born American Ar-chitect who had worked his way to New York,Washington and Dallas. His famed architecture allaround the world includes The Bank of China, TheNational Gallery of Art, The Pyramid outside theLouvre in Paris, The Miho Museum, The Rock andRoll Hall of Fame etc. He is famously called ‘TheMaster of Modern Architecture’. The 41st India In-terior Design Day was a great success among De-sign students as it was a great learning experiencefor them. They got an opportunity to meet & talkwith leading architects of Jaipur to discuss theirprojects and get their expert views on it. They alsoenhanced their knowledge about new materialsand technology being used in town currently.

DASTAK- THE AWAKENING

ASMITA, is one of the leading Hindi theatregroups in the country stands and is commit-

ted to aesthetically innovative and socially rele-vant theatre. "DASTAK"- Talks about violence againstwomen at public places. Why women in the na-tional capital of Delhi feel unsafe in many public

spaces, and at all times of the day and night. Cut-ting across class, profession, they face continu-ous and different forms of sexual harassment incrowded as well as secluded places, includingpublic transport, cars, markets, roads, public toi-lets and parks. School and college students aremost vulnerable to harassment that is particu-larly rampant in public transport like buses.

Interior Design Day in India is celebrated on 22nd Decem-ber. This year, for the first time I attended the celebration.The Jaipur Regional Chapter of IIID in partnership withArch Academy of Design, Jaipur organised a memorableevent for all its members, students and design fraternity asa whole on 21st December 2013. Many Architects, Engi-neers & Businessmen were present on the occasion. Itwas great to see Anshuman Sharma, secretary of IIID, arenowned architect & proud owner of Design Inc. alongwith Sanjay Kothari, the chairman of IIID-JRC presentthere. Dhruv Gupta who freelanced with Mudra advertisingAgency on various exhibition projects and Mr Kuljit SinghBains, Rtd. DGP, were among other esteemed guests whohonored the event. Students of Poornima University andAyojan School of Architecture & Planning along with ArchAcademy displayed their works.The event started with a technical session with architects

and vendors like CERA,Vitra bathroom culturesand other plumbing &sanitary product leaders.They talked about effi-ciency and effectivenessof their products in termsof lighting & electricity, airconditioning, automation,false ceiling and colour &texture. They also ex-plained how easy it wouldbe to use them for the in-terior of a house. It was avery interactive, informa-tive and knowledgeablesession. As an interior de-sign student, I learntabout how a product is

made, why only a specific material is used, what pointsone should keep in mind while designing a product, howto attract the consumers, how easily it can be made andlots more. After lunch, an important and very interesting session washeld with Dhruv Gupta. Let me tell you, I was a volunteerfor that day, working in the catering section but the sessionthat was going on at the other side of the campus drew allmy attention as I heard the topic "Perspective". Dhruvalong with other Chief guests, talked about what is per-spective, perception and thinking out of the box in design. Last but not the least, the movie show of the world famousand my most favorite architect I. M. Pei - First Person Sin-gular was déja vu for me. It was such an inspiring andmotivational movie. Mr Pei’s words “To me it's just Architec-ture. There is no such thing as modern architecture, postmodern, deconstructionism, you can use all 'ism', but Idon't believe in any of them. They come and go; the onethat really survives and lasts is 'Architecture'. Architectureof that time." still keep on ringing in my ears. These sen-tences were spoken by him and I feel a person needscourage to speak such powerful lines. If one can think likethis, nobody can stop him / her from being an architect ora designer. The event got over but the inputs that we received will re-main with us for a lifetime as our strong weapon or as ourthird hand to become a successful designer. Each year In-terior Design Day will give us new inputs that will renewand increase our knowledge. Thanks to IIID and our insti-tute for hosting the great event.

He created a staircasewith an innovation that got himthe 1st prize in ideation at theinter-collegiate competition atthe event.

Amber Fort InspirationFor ages The Amber fort of Jaipur has been an inspiration tomany people for its rich treasure of art, craft and Architecture.The fort is known for its artistic style of Hindu element. It wasbuilt by Raja Man Singh I. Amber Fort is Built with Marble andRed Stone which is usually common in Jaipur. Work done onthe walls is well crafted and designed mainly using glass andmaterial that gleams. Most of the structure is based onColumns which are carved. Largely, the areas are decoratedwith paintings and forms created with Geometric shapes.

In context to what we watched on41st India Interior Design Day held

in Arch Academy about I. M. Pei, hereis an article on one of his buildingsthat he has designed and which I havebeen lucky enough to visit - the Mu-seum of Islamic Art. The MIA is lo-cated in Doha the capital of Qatar andI was able to visit it because my Dadis working in Qatar. Qatar is a sover-eign Arab state, located in westernAsia. Its sole land border is Saudi Ara-bia, with the rest of its territory sur-rounded by the Persian Gulf.

The museum welcomes you with afountain, the wide space of the mu-seum gives a very positive vibe and anIslamic aroma which excited me moreto go and have a look. To take a looknot only on the ancient collection butalso on the architecture.

After asking people over there, Icame to know that I. M. Pei had de-clined all proposed sites for the mu-seum, and suggested a stand-aloneisland for the structure in order toavoid the encroachment on otherbuildings. The location of the buildingis the best part. Thus it was built onthe water, 64 acres approximately. Atthe age of 91, Pei had to be coaxedout of retirement to undertake thisenterprise. He traveled throughoutthe Muslim world on a six monthquest to learn about Muslim architec-ture and history and read Muslimtexts to draw inspiration for his de-sign.

The museum draws much influencefrom ancient Islamic architecture, yethas a unique design. It was the first ofits kind in an Arab State of the PersianGulf and has a very large collection ofIslamic art, plus a study and a library.

The museum houses a collection ofwork gathered since late 1980s, in-cluding manuscripts, textiles and ce-ramics. It is one of the world’s mostcomplete collections of Islamic arti-facts, with items originating in Spain,Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, India, andCentral Asia.

The building designed by Mr Pei atthe advanced age of 90 years depictsa perfect blend of modern & islamicart and is a wonderful piece of archi-tecture to see.

Ieoh Ming Pei (born April 26, 1917), com-monly known as I. M. Pei, is a ChineseAmerican architect often called the masterof modern architecture. Born in Guangzhouand raised in Hong Kong and Shanghai, Peidrew inspiration at an early age from thegardens at Suzhou. In 1935, he moved tothe United States and enrolled in the Univer-sity of Pennsylvania's architecture school,but quickly transferred to the Massachu-setts Institute of Technology. He was un-happy with the focus at both schools onBeaux-Arts architecture, and spent his freetime researching emerging architects, espe-cially Le Corbusier. After graduating, hejoined the Harvard Graduate School of De-sign (GSD) and became a friend of theBauhaus architects Walter Gropius and Mar-cel Breuer. In 1939, he married Eileen Loo,who had introduced him to the GSD com-munity. They have been married for overseventy years, and have four children, in-cluding architects Chien Chung Pei and LiChung Pei.From 1948 Mr. Pei spent seven years withNew York real estate magnate William Zeck-endorf, before establishing his own inde-pendent design firm I. M. Pei & Associatesin 1955. Mr. Pei retired from full-time prac-tice in 1990. Among the early projects onwhich Pei took the lead were the L'EnfantPlaza Hotel in Washington, DC and theGreen Building at MIT. His first major recog-nition came with the National Center for At-mospheric Research in Colorado; his newstature led to his selection as chief architectfor the John F. Kennedy Library in Massa-chusetts.In the early 1980s, Pei was the focus ofcontroversy when he designed a glass-and-steel pyramid for the Musée du Louvre inParis. He later returned to the world of thearts by designing the Museum of Islamic Artin Qatar and other museums around theworld.Pei has won a wide variety of prizes andawards in the field of architecture includingthe first Praemium Imperiale for Architec-ture in 1989, and the Lifetime AchievementAward from the Cooper-Hewitt, National De-sign Museum in 2003.In 1983, he won thePritzker Prize, sometimes called the NobelPrize of architecture.

In the month of December 2013, VVLead South-to-South Exchange Program held in Kampala,capital of Uganda. Fifty extraordinary women

leaders from 24 countries across the globe partici-pated in the VVLead Fellowship’s annual South-SouthExchange Program, which took place on the pictur-esque shores of Lake Victoria. Director and Founderof Arch Academy of Design, Ms Archna Surana, aLead Fellow in the program, travelled to Africa to par-ticipate in this global event.

Vital Voices (VV) Global Partnership is a preemi-nent non-governmental organization (NGo) that iden-tifies, trains and empowers emerging women leadersand social entrepreneurs around the globe, enablingthem to create a better world for all. It grew out ofthe U.S. government's successful Vital Voices Democ-racy Initiative. The Vital Voices Democracy Initiativewas established in 1997 by then-First Lady HillaryRodham Clinton and former Secretary of StateMadeleine Albright after the United Nations FourthWorld Conference on Women in Beijing to promotethe advancement of women as a U.S. foreign policygoal. The overwhelmingly positive response to theVital Voices Democracy Initiative led to the creationof Vital Voices Global Partnership as a non-profit

non-governmental organization (NGo). Vital Voicesis at the forefront of international coalitions to com-bat human trafficking and other forms of violenceagainst women & girls. They enable women to be-come change agents in their governments, advocatesfor social justice, and supporters of democracy andthe rule of law. They equip women with management,business development, marketing, and communica-tion skills to expand their enterprises, provide sup-port to their families, and create jobs in theircommunities. Vital Voice has international staff anda team of over 1,000 partners, pro bono experts andleaders, including senior government, corporate andNGo executives. They have trained and mentoredmore than 14,000 emerging women leaders across144 countries in Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Latin America,the Caribbean, and the Middle East. These womenhave returned home to further train and mentormore than 500,000 additional women and girls intheir communities.

The DeutscheGesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)GmbH sponsored her for the CHANCE workshop onStrategic Planning and Financial Management ofBusiness Women’s Associations.

The South-to-South Exchange Program was a fourdays program designed around specific needs andobjectives of the attending VVLead Fellows based ontheir responses to the Fellowship’s needs assessmentsurvey. The goal of this large-scale, intensive programwas for participating Fellows to become equippedwith new knowledge, tools, connections and ideas totackle their personal leadership and organization orbusiness’s goals. The participants exchanged ideas,resources and best practices from their innovativemodels striving to enhance safety & security, improvethe rights, and economic & social wellbeing ofwomen and girls in their respective communities.The program consisted of peer and Vital Voices ledtrainings, facilitated dialogue, information and re-source exchanges. ing groups throughout the program focused on top-ics ranging from advocacy, training, public speaking,networking, best practices for strategic planning, fa-cilitation for team empowerment and an innovativetraining on audio story-telling.

The participants were imparted the knowledge ofdifferentiation between ‘dream’ and ‘smart goal’.Goals should be simplistically written and clearly de-fined. They should be measurable so that one canhave tangible evidence of accomplishment of thegoal. Goals should be achievable; they should be diffi-cult enough to challenge one, but defined wellenough so that one can achieve them. Goals shouldmeasure outcomes, not activities. They should belinked to a timeframe that creates a practical senseof urgency, or results in complexity between the cur-rent reality and the vision of the goal. The trainingon public speaking was led by Ms Margaux Bergen,Vice President of Strategic Communications at VitalVoices, on building a networking strategy, beingmore effective when networking and developing acontact management system. Allison Shapira, Presi-dent of Global Public Speaking trained the partici-pant on developing an authentic “elevator speech” asa tool for furthering professional or leadership goals.She also led the training about speaking on behalf ofan issue and motivating others to take action as wellas pitching a business or non-profit idea to potentialfunders, partners and employees. Kathleen Holland,Founding Partner at KMH Associated lead the train-ing to give a fresh perspective on negotiating, specifi-cally negotiating an agreement without giving in. Shealso lead the training on the 8-step process to assesscurrent satisfaction and deliver improved service tobeneficiaries. VVLead Fellows participated in a ses-sion to facilitate one-on-one information exchangesbetween participants. Each fellow was asked to iden-tify two to three concrete offerings and two to threeconcrete take-aways based on the particular back-ground and needs of each exchange partner. The of-ferings consisted of resources (i. e. tools, templates,knowledge, skills, connections, advice etc) that onecan give to her peer and the take-aways are re-cources that one would like to acquire in order to ad-vance her work to achieve her personal leadershipor professional goal. The South to South Exchangeprogram included site visits to a few organizations.These organizations include CEDA international,TERREWoDE and UWEAL.

Ms Archana Surana’s participation was aimed ateconomic empowerment of women through voca-tional trainings & higher education in design inemerging economies in Africa and Asia. She was oneof the great orators at the program. She was the onlyone from India to achieve the completion certificateon the final day. Her dream to make emergingeconomies of the world to believe in their indigenousknowledge systems, create opportunities from theirresources and take them to the global market hasbeen fuelled by this program. In the coming times theworld is going to witness the empowerment that shewill provide through her mentorship to the VVLeadFellows of different countries of Africa and Asia.

As stated by her,introducing Khadi fabric in In-dian tradition is not a big chal-lenge but introducing it in aninnovative way is a challenge.She used khadi in every possibleway in Indian tradition as sheconstructed her ‘Kalidar Kurta’.It was an interesting assignmentto fuse khadi fabric in your ownway with Indian clothing as ittouched the real essence of In-dian tradition, she said. Being anIndian, she wants to preserve itfor future generations.

A diligent design in-stitute, the ARCH Acad-emy of Design decisivelytook this opportunity to encourageits students to unleash their naturalpotential through this hands-on de-sign intervention under the aus-pices of its Project Cell. Infurtherance to achieve the goals, fif-teen fashion design students wereoriented by the respective facultymembers of ARCH to conceptualize& produce detailed garment design

sketches (silhouettes) for youthunder 3 categories – Ladies, Gents& Teenagers, for submission toKVIB. Delightfully the design con-cepts of ten ARCH fashion designstudents got shortlisted and ap-proved by KVIB. They were then in-vited to develop and present thefinal garments (prototypes) for theproposed exhibition being organ-ized by KVIB, scheduled at JawaharKala Kendra, Jaipur in the month ofJanuary 2014. Priyanka Agarwal pursuing FashionDesign (2 year diploma) worked on adesert theme as it related somewhatto khadi. She feels that a desert is freeof confusion; there is no doubt. Be-

cause it is a wide, open vista withoutvegetation, it represents brutal hon-esty, impersonal struggle and theharsh realities of survival. Desertsrepresent clarity, revelation and pu-rity, barriers, obstacles and chal-lenges. There are strong overtonesof spirituality and religion bound upsymbolically with desert landscapes,just as what khadi itself represents.Mahatma Gandhi began promotingthe spinning of khadi for rural self-employment and self-reliance in the1920s in India, thus making khadian integral part and icon of theSwadeshi movement. The freedomstruggle revolved around the use ofkhadi fabrics and the dumping offoreign made clothes. Thus it sym-bolized the political ideas and inde-pendence itself, and to this day mostpoliticians in India are seen only inkhadi clothing. She has used khadicotton because it is very soothing inthe summer season with ampleamount of air ventilation, and hasthe capacity to absorb moisture i.e.easily soaks the sweat and keeps thewearer cool and dry.

Sarita Yadav, stu-dent of F.D (2 year)selected the theme‘Butterfly’ for thekhadi garment de-sign contest usingkhadi fabric. She ac-knowledges thatshe has learnt a lot

during the entire assignment e.g. values ofteamwork and commitment, how to competeefficiently, how to work hard, how to concen-trate on goals. She has made sensible use ofembroidery in her garment. The fabric usedwas cotton khadi and winter khadi. She usedkhadi in different possible western silhou-ettes, ranging from jackets to jumpsuits. In-troducing traditional (khadi) fabric in acontemporary silhouette was somewhat chal-lenging, but not complicated. In fact it wasinteresting to mix conventional fabric inmodern garments to create an innovativelook. Eco-friendly fabrics now-a-days get alot of attention as there are connoisseurswho care and aspire to be a part of the greenmovement. She herself loves wearing khadiand wants to preserve it for the up-cominggeneration as it reflects the true essence ofIndia.

Pallavi Gupta whostudies B.Sc FashionDesign (4yrs pro-gram) in Arch Acad-emy of Design,participated in the“Khadi GarmentCompetition 2013”

to grab the opportunity to design a trendyoutfit for the destined Khadi retail stores.According to her, it was a great exercisewhich really made her open her mind,more creatively. To her, the rules werepretty relaxed and enabled her to go forwhat she wanted with the confidence ofdoing it right. ‘obviously, one has to de-sign a garment with the client’s vision andits always good to have healthy competi-tion’. She played with various colors andsubmits that she totally enjoyed garmentdesigning which actually broadened hercreativity. She further pronounced thatshe has lived her design project, and en-joyed it. It did not matter whether she wonthe competition or not. She acknowledgedthe support of her faculty members whoinspired her and encouraged her to takeup the design competition.

Khadi Sonam Mittal, studies Fashion De-sign (GPEM) 2 years course and wastruly excited to participate in thecompetition and chose ‘teenager’(13-18 yrs age group) category towork upon. She selected ‘Mehandi’(henna) theme as an inspiration forher work and used color board &style board as per the current trend& forecast. With these explorations,she started her illustration under thedirection of her faculty where shegot the chance to learn the ins andouts of Corel Draw technique andused it effectively to make variationsin her main illustration. She conse-quently prepared specificationsheets of her main illustration andlearnt other important technicalitiesinvolved. She found it a very interest-ing & knowledge gaining project.She hopes that her enthusiasm to-wards her work will help her to ex-plore further and work on more suchprojects. She sincerely acknowl-edged the support of her teachersduring the entire assignment.

Sujit Kumar, studies B.Sc. Fashion Design-ing (5th Sem.) at Arch Academy of Design.He was very excited to share his experienceas a contestant of the "Khadi Garment De-sign Competition 2013” organized by theRajasthan Khadi and Village IndustriesBoard, Jaipur. The main objective of thiscompetition was to promote the use ofkhadi in today’s fashion/ daily wear cloth-

ing. He looked at it as an excellent opportunity for a student like himto work within the given parameters, viz. creating a garment foryouth using a given khadi fabric. He claimed that apart from design-ing, this competition also taught him how to work professionally asa Designer, and wishes to have more such fascinating projects sothat he & more students can get the opportunity to show their talentsby hands-on working at a relatively bigger scale and also learn man-agement skills in order to achieve the objectives of becoming suc-cessful Design Entrepreneurs of the future. He wishes that hisgarment will be selected in the competition and looks forward to winthe contest.

She lived out her child-hood in a royal state, more in a daze, in the ar-tisans workshop and amazed by their minutegestures, the shapeless talking shape, the rhyth-mic sound, the scent, the color, the delight ofwitnessing the becoming. These small momentsshe says are indelibly engraved in her memory.

She continued her journey of experience withARCH to work in the design & craft sectorwhere she has researched, learned, and ex-plored materials & which she has tried to putonto products/ surfaces using different type offabrics including Khadi, which not only reflectstyle but also characterize good workmanshipand the true essence of craft & culture. She be-lieves that it is not about design for design sakebut about design that adapts to and meets theneeds of people.

She chose the kids category to make the de-signer outfit on the theme – Guitar. She carriedout research work with various Khadi fabricsavailable and used Khadi wool in her garment.She has had a great experience and learnt howto make design spec. sheets, variations, theme& colour boards etc and found the competitionvery interesting.

Vinita Chandwani, Fash-ion Design student (4year degree course)shared her personal ex-perience of the project.She affirmed that she

has learnt a great many things during herparticipation in this competition and haschanged her entire outlook & attitude to-wards khadi, its usage, and implementa-

tion. Designing garments in khadi foryoungsters, teenagers and kids was inter-esting as well as challenging.Khadi is a term used for hand-spun andhand-woven cloth. She opted for themenswear category, and the outfit as perfashion forecasts (style & color) of fall win-ter 2014-15. She used a patchwork tech-nique. She stated that introducingtraditional (khadi) fabric in a contemporarysilhouette seems to be a little challenging,but not very complex. She has tried usingkhadi in many possible western silhouettes.

ACCESS- ARCH JOINT INITIATIVE Skill matters

In order to meet the common goal i.e. to addressthe immense demand for skilled workforce in thejewellery industry in Jaipur and improving the

craft Value Chains, ARCH has collaborated with AC-CESS Development Services (a not-for-profit organi-zation) to fill the gap by providing Skill & Designup-gradation trainings to target artisans/micro-enter-prises engaged in the manufacturing of fashion jewellery. It is noteworthy that ARCH is also identifiedas Skill Knowledge Provider for vocational courses inJewellery Design by the All India Council of TechnicalEducation (AICTE).

Notably, ACCESS & ARCH have earlier worked col-lectively during the JJADe project (Jaipur JewelleryArtisans Development Project) to promote the JaipurJewellery value chain. In furtherance to achieve thegoal, Arch has signed a MoU with ACCESS in Septem-ber 2013 for providing technical support to UPLIFT(Urban Poor Livelihood Initiative through Finance &

Trainings) being implemented by ACCESS and fundedby the ‘Michael & Susan Dell Foundation’ wherebyARCH, as a strategic project partner, is impartingshort/ long term training programmes in Design,Technology & Skill domains which includes hands-onSkill dev. trainings, Design workshops, Classroom andDiploma projects.

The overall objective of ‘ARCH-ACCESS joint initia-tive’ under the aegis of the ARCH Project Cell is tocreate a skilled workforce to address the increasingdemand of the industry by equipping 725 Jewellerymaking Artisans/ SMEs (in urban/ semi-urban craftclusters of Jaipur city) directly with improved skillsto enable them to enhance the design aspect, produc-tivity & quality of their products so as to competewith the ever changing market demands & aspira-tions. In the process, it will provide ARCH a greateroutreach to the marginalized craft communities andan opportunity to develop customized short-termmodules as per the needs of the artisans/ SMEs.Above and beyond, the Design students of ARCH will

have a rich exposure to craft clusters & achance to interact directly with grassroot ar-

tisans to understand the indigenous craft &cultures, intently.

The ARCH-ACCESS joint initiative started witha 3 day skill up-gradation training in Jewellerymaking using “Coiling” technique at ‘BaraBhaiyo ka Rasta’, Chandpole, to improve the

existing skills of jewellery micro-enter-prises wherein the master trainers of

ARCH - Ganesh Sasmal & Asit Burman(Jewellery Design department) underthe guidance of Indrajit Das (Men-tor) trained 15 target beneficiariesof the UPLIFT project. The mentors

used copper & brass wire withfancy plastic beads and cre-ated different forms by coil-ing the wire leading todevelopment of innovative

prototypes (earrings). Besides,ARCH Jewellery Design studentsof 4th and 6th semester also par-

ticipated in the training pro-gramme to get a hands-on experience of jewellerycraft and worked with the trainee artisans toward de-velopment of market-led products. The training pro-gramme was facilitated by Ms. Shweta Rai (DesignConsultant with ACCESS) and her team.

Arch Jewellery Design studentVishakha Jain, Tushar and MeghaPatel's elements ware picked andshowcased as innovative elements. Stu-dents of both Jewellery and FashionDesign from ARCH participated in thisworkshop.

In the two days workshop, studentsalso interacted with Yash Agarwal ofBirdhichand Ghanshyamdas and Ab-hishek Haritwal of Symetree to knowhow they managed to create a brand ofnational and international repute.

The 3-day Skill Up-gradation training program was held at theproduction unit of Mr. Jayanto Mandal (Micro Enterprise) locatedat 12 Bhaiyon ka Rasta, Chandpole, Jaipur to train 15 semi-skilled artisans to improve their skills in terms of Design & Productdevelopment. These artisans are engaged in manufacturing metalbased fashion jewellery.

Was instrumental in set-ting up their preforming factories both in India, Burma and Thailand, aswell as creating the network to purchase the natural rough to supplythem. He was the key person involved with the multi million dollar dona-tion from Swarovski for the building of the GIA landmark "Crystal Tower."

Design has been an integral part of the Indiancontext for centuries and now it being en-dorsed in a positive way by the Government

too. India had released the National Design Policy in2007 which clearly indicates the importance of Designin the economy and how it impacts the business inIndia.

The establishment of a platform for creative designdevelopment, promotion and partnerships across dif-ferent sectors, states and regions for integrating designwith traditional & technological resources has been apart of the policy. There is a very important point raisedin the policy - to mention ‘Designed in India’ in conjunc-tion with ‘Made in India’ and ‘Served from India’.

Being a key member of the fraternity for the last 14years, ARCH has been fostering Design Education andwants to take the pointers released in the policy fur-ther. Since inception, Arch has been very vigilant on itsmission toward harnessing indigenous culture and artthrough design. ARCH sincerely appreciates the struc-ture of the Policy of India which has a strong mentionof sustaining & strengthening its traditional knowledge,indigenous skills and capacities while being sensitiveto global heritage to ensure engagement of craft arti-sans in the manufacturing of innovative products forglobal markets.

In furtherance to achieve its mission, Arch has re-cently participated in the College of Fashion (LCF) Col-loquia under the auspices of IFFTI, where Ms. ArchanaSurana, Founder & Director presented a ResearchPaper in London, on ‘Eco-heritage Crafts’ to promotenatural dyed and hand printed textiles.

ARCH through these kind of initiatives has always at-tempted to harness indigenous skills, heritage crafts &culture and promote environment friendly design &production processes which actually aligns us to theNational Design Policy & its approach. The policy alsostates adoption of Bachelor of Design (B. Des) acrossall universities and making Design-education formal-ized to create a rich talent pool of designers for emerg-ing India.

Today, Design is no more restricted to a region. Toaddress the need for developing international designsyllabi and its delivery mechanism, ARCH has part-nered with Pearson Edexcel to provide its students withinternational exposure & credentials through the BTECHND (Higher National Diploma) Level 5 & 7 from UK.As a result, the students can progress to any of manylisted institutions world wide to attain further creden-tials.

With this endeavor, we surely foresee a great futureahead for Design Education and India as a Design Coun-try in coming years. India is bound to witness a drasticchange in manufacturing processes and thus the de-mand for professional designers backed with formal &inclusive Design education will be enormous. Arch hasbeen actively engaged in creating this talent pool andwith more such initiatives will produce empowered andworld-class creative designers.

Charles Eames, Jr (June 17, 1907 –August 21, 1978) was born in St.Louis, Missouri. Charles was the

nephew of St. Louis architect William S.Eames. By the age of 14, while attendingYeatman high school, Charles worked atthe Laclede Steel Company as a part-timelaborer, where he learned about engi-neering, drawing, and architecture (andalso first entertained the idea of one daybecoming an architect).

Charles Eames was greatly influencedby the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen(whose son Eero, also an architect, wouldbecome a partner and friend). At theelder Saarinen's invitation, Charlesmoved in 1938 with his wife Catherineand daughter Lucia to Michigan, to fur-ther study architecture at the CranbrookAcademy of Art, where he would becomea teacher and head of the industrial de-sign department. In order to apply for theArchitecture and Urban Planning Pro-gram, Eames defined an area of focus—the St. Louis waterfront. Together withEero Saarinen he designed prize-winningfurniture for New York's Museum ofModern Art "organic Design in HomeFurnishings" competition.

Their work displayed the new tech-nique of wood moulding (originally de-veloped by Alvar Aalto), that Eameswould further develop in many mouldedplywood products, including chairs andother furniture, splints and stretchers forthe U.S. Navy during World War II.

In 1941, Charles and Catherine di-vorced, and he married his Cranbrookcolleague Ray Kaiser, who was born inSacramento, California. He then movedwith her to Los Angeles, California, wherethey would work and live until theirdeaths. In the late 1940s, as part of theArts & Architecture magazine's "CaseStudy" program, Charles and Ray de-

signed and built the groundbreakingEames House, Case Study House #8, astheir home. Located upon a cliff over-looking the Pacific ocean and handcon-structed within a matter of days entirelyof pre-fabricated steel parts intended forindustrial construction, it remains a mile-stone of modern architecture.

Charles Eames died of a heart attack onAugust 21, 1978 while on a consultingtrip in his native Saint Louis, and wasburied in the Calvary Cemetery there. Henow has a star on the St. Louis Walk ofFame.

The India Report was prepared byCharles Eames and Ray Eames in 1958.The Government of India had asked forrecommendations on a programme oftraining in design that would serve as anaid to the small industries; and thatwould resist the present rapid deteriora-tion in design and quality of consumergoods. Charles Eames, American indus-trial designer and his wife and colleagueRay Eames, visited India for three monthsat the invitation of the Government, withthe sponsorship of the Ford Foundation,to explore the problems of design and tomake recommendations for a trainingprogramme.

The Eameses toured throughout India,making a careful study of the many cen-tres of design, handicrafts and generalmanufacture. They talked with many per-sons, official and non-official, in the fieldof small and large industry, in design andarchitecture, and in education. ARCH Academy of Design receivesmany international students everyyear. A fair number of them are

from the African Continent. Ms ArchanaSurana, Founder and Director of theARCH Academy of Design recently visitedmany countries of Africa to interact withlearners, educators, designers and designentrepreneurs. She found that they havea rich culture of art and craft, but theylack knowledge in terms of design. Africahas very rich heritage in term of textile;still they import dresses to wear. Peopleare very creative, but they are unable totake their indigenous craft to a globallevel. They need design intervention tomake a niche for themselves in the world.There lies a huge possibility of design ed-ucation there and students are lookingforward to India to get education in de-sign. Many universities in Africa seek al-liance with Arch in this respect. They arealso interested in students and teachersexchange programmes. The ARCH Acad-emy of Design is planning to scale up itsdesign education internationally to assistthem and reach out to its students in theircountries to ensure that they get thesame standard of education which theywant to receive in India. The move byARCH will benefit those students who areunable to travel the long distance becauseof monetary or some other reasons.
