Raja Ravi VarmaApr 29, 1848 - Oct 2, 1906

Raja Ravi Varma was a celebrated Indian painter and artist. RajaRavi Varma was closely related to the royal family of Travancore ofpresent-day Kerala state in India. He is considered among thegreatest painters in the history of Indian art for a number ofaesthetic and broader social reasons. Firstly, his works are held tobe among the best examples of the fusion of European techniqueswith a purely Indian sensibility. While continuing the tradition andaesthetics of Indian art, his paintings employed the latestEuropean academic art techniques of the day.

Secondly, he was notable for making affordable lithographs of hispaintings available to the public, which greatly enhanced his reachand influence as a painter and public figure. Indeed, hislithographs increased the involvement of common people withfine arts and defined artistic tastes among common people forseveral decades. In particular, his depictions of Hindu deities andepisodes from the epics and Puranas have received profoundacceptance from the public and are found, often as objects ofworship, across the length and breadth of India.

Vincent van GoghMar 30, 1853 - Jul 29, 1890

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painterwho is among the most famous and influential figures in thehistory of Western art. In just over a decade, he created about2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of whichdate from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes,portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold coloursand dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork thatcontributed to the foundations of modern art. He was notcommercially successful.

Vincent van GoghMar 30, 1853 - Jul 29, 1890

Born into an upper-middle-class family, Van Gogh drew as a childand was serious, quiet, and thoughtful. As a young man he workedas an art dealer, often travelling, but became depressed after hewas transferred to London. He turned to religion and spent time asa Protestant missionary in southern Belgium. He drifted in illhealth and solitude before taking up painting in 1881, havingmoved back home with his parents. His younger brother Theosupported him financially, and the two kept a longcorrespondence by letter.

M. F. HusainSep 17, 1915 - Jun 9, 2011

Maqbool Fida Husain better known as M. F. Husain was an Indianartist known for executing bold, vibrantly coloured narrativepaintings in a modified Cubist style. He was one of the mostcelebrated and internationally recognized Indian artists of the20th century. He was one of the founding member of BombayProgressive Artists' Group.

M. F. HusainSep 17, 1915 - Jun 9, 2011

Husain is associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s. His earlyassociation with the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group usedmodern technique, and was inspired by the "new" India after thepartition of 1947. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the Ramayana,the Mahabharata, the British Raj, and motifs of Indian urban andrural life.

R. K. Laxman 24 October 1921 – 26 January 2015

Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Laxman was an Indian cartoonist,illustrator, and humorist. He is best known for his creation TheCommon Man and for his daily cartoon strip, You Said It in TheTimes of India, which started in 1951.R K Laxman started his career as a part-time cartoonist. His firstfull-time job was as a political cartoonist for The Free Press Journalin Mumbai. Later, he joined The Times of India, and becamefamous for The Common Man character, which turned out to bethe turning point in Laxman's life.
