What the Numbers say…• Y oung people are exposed to 8 1/2 hours of media content

oriented homes spend less time reading.• Y oung people report reading less when:

– They have a TV in their room– The household has the TV on all the time.– Parent have no rules regarding TV watching.

• Heavy TV viewers spend about 19 minutes less per day engaged in homework than light TV watchers.

Problems With Passive TV Watching• Use it or lose it…

– Children’s brains become deprived when not being stimulated through mental exercise. This can affect the rate and quality of brain growth.

• Reduces the amount of physical activity children engage in.

• Exposure to media violence has a negative influence.

The social, emotional, and cognitive development that occurs at specific ages helps to determine if a program is “ age-appropriate” for a child.

Infants Develop strong sensorimotor. Respond when their physical

and emotional needs are met. Require nurturing.

Toddlers S ymbolic thinking emerges. Pretending is possible.

2 & 3-Year Olds Prosocial behavior emerges
