The Eighteenth Annual Statewide Chinese Painting Contest:
Celebrate the Learning of the Chinese Culture
The theme of the contest is Celebrate the Learning of the Chinese Culture. This theme is extended to all topics related to the Chinese culture and will not be limited to the lunar New Year celebration.

There will be three (3) winners and two (2) Honorable Mentions from each group. All winners will receive a certificate of award from the New York State Department of Education Office of Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Studies and the New York City Department of Education Office of English Language Learners and education-related gifts donated by sponsors and community based organizations.

[dnglong] are not only served for the purpose of illumination, but also other meanings. For example, in ancient time, kids would bring a [dnglong] on the first day of school, and the teacher would light up the [dnglong] to symbolize bright future for the student.
Chinese people believe that [dnglong] could ward off evil spirits.
[dnglong] also means joy, luck & reunion.

Lets make a paper lantern
Decide which lantern you would like to make
Say the name of the lantern in Chinese and ask for a template
Choose 2 sheets of card stock
Fold and cut it out
Cut another one out
Write your name on the lantern and staple them together

Google image for a simple symmetry picture
This will be the one
Copy and pasted the image into PAINT
Select half of the image and cut it half
Paste it into a new page of PAINT
Suggestion: save it as a JPEG picture format before you start editing the image
Resize it into the size you want

After the size is being doubled.
Optional: you may use the brush to draw the outline of the image
Copy and paste into Microsoft Word
Congratulations, now you know how to design your lantern template.
You may start thinking about a lantern you would like to make.
Start googling for an image.
Any image that fits the Lantern Festival will be good.
