1. RAIN SENSOR for the car using frequency modulation

Rain sensors are very core parts in automatic wiper control system. They can substitute the old-fashioned ETACS (Electronic Time Alarm Control System).Installed internally in the upper position of windshield, rain sensors check the raindrop status and activate the automatic wiper system without any attention of driver. Drivers don't need to care about the speed and time of wiper systems.

1. FSC’s Rain Sensor for automotive application

▣ Key Technology

This rain sensor, in row arranged optoelectronic parts, is immune to the influence of surrounding light.When raindrops fall on windshield, the rain sensor perceives change of reflected light intensity by raindrops.

The conventional rain sensors often detect unwanted light by windshield because of their PD and LED arrangement.In contrast, We detect only reflected light by raindrops, thanks to FSC’s particular sensor arrangement scheme and related electronics. In addition, this rain sensor eliminated expensive all optical components.

By arranging optoelectronic components, it has capability to easily extent detection area.

▣ Strong Points

1) Rain sensor can detect the raindrops without influence of ambient light and analyze the volume of raindrops more precisely. As a result, it can control wiper motor in accurate manner.

2) Rain sensor eliminated expensive optical components, thus resulted in reduced production cost.

3) By adapting simple optoelectronic geometry, it can be with reduced size and lower price advantage.

[LIGHT WAVEGUIDE method]With this method, signal light enters into the front side of windshield. So, light used to go into windshield comes out of windshield when raindrops fall against windshield. Consequently, the intensity of light that LED gets decreases so that rain sensor distinguishes the quantity of raindrops by the intensity of light.

[LIGHT REFLECTION method]With this method, signal light goes into windshield on the tilt. When raindrops fall against windshield, reflection rate changes and the change cause intensity of light that LED gets change. By that change, rain sensor distinguishes the quantity of raindrops

[BACK SCATTER method]With this method, signal processed light is emitted toward windshield in omni-directional manner, and reflected light in proportion with the quantity of raindrops fallen onto windshield is detected by photodiode.

Weakpoints

This method requires light coupler to adhere closely on the front side of windshield when signal light which functions as sensor enters into windshield. Also, It is necessary to keep incident angle accurately for this method. So it has complicated optical instrument and is difficult to install.

With this method, LED is installed on the opposite of signal light which functions as sensor so that not only reflection by raindrop but also reflection light from the front side of windshield come into LED together. As a result, this method is vulnerable to noise.

3. Product Development

Fig. 1 is the first MOCK UP SAMPLE for patent verification and Fig. 2&3 are responses verified by 1st sample. Fig. 4&5 are prototypes to commercialization. By applying this technology, it has price advantage with improved performance.

4. Other Competitor’s

▣ Patent Issue The tendency of luxurious features of automobile has increased demand for special car sensor. In respect to RAIN SENSOR, the application has extended to semi sedan (1500CC) level since 2006, Several companies have been considering its business possibilities, but they are unable to overcome TRW/BOSCH's patent barrier.

Our company received official notice that we will not get involved in patent disputes with published RAIN SENSOR patents after participating in Patent Dispute Prevention System sponsored by The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) & Song-do Techno Park.
